Nice ambience, great service, tasty food 5/27/2008

I was first lured into Capurro's as I was walking by and a live jazz band was playing. I love dining with live music! Didn't have time to sit and eat, but kept them in mind. I went back on a first date and loved it. The live band was playing again, and we were immediately and warmly greeted by the restaurant owner. We definitely felt welcome. We were seated in about ten minutes since the house was a little full (sat at the bar while we waited). Waiters were friendly, and food was great. Not to mention the food comes in large portions. A couple of weeks later a friend and I decided to try a place a couple restaurants down.. we were seated outside and were ignored for a full ten minutes, and this place wasn't even busy. Couldn't take it so we ran over to Capurro's and I received the same great service I had the first time-- seated promptly, friendly staff and our order was ready within minutes. Highly recommended if you're out on a date, or like a warm environment, friendly and welcoming staff, some live music, and great seafood. Great food and service at Fisherman's Wharf 3/31/2008

I don't know what Mrs snip is talking about. It's obvious she's a bitter person. Or perhaps no restaurants give appropriate service, at least not up to her expectations. \r \r I've lived in SF for 3 years now and Capurro's is by far one of the better restaurants on Fishermans Wharf. It's one of the few places that I will actually go out of my way to eat at. I recommend the sand dabs. \r \r Our waiter, James was very helpful in choosing them. He said he eats them about twice a week. I figured why not. They were excellent to say the least, paired with risotto and spinach. Yum!\r \r We ate there on a monday night and were very surprised to have a live jazz band playing while we ate.\r \r 4 Stars! Good food & entertainment 3/6/2008

I met some friends who were from out of town staying near the wharf for dinner and drinks here. The clam chowder was excellent to start and we split a bunch of plates. The pizza was surpisingly good, the crab cakes were ok not great, and the gnocchi was delicious. It's a lively scene, they had a string band playing the night I was there, and definitely worth sticking around after dinner. Cool place all in all. more

Native San Franciscians loved it, too! 11/13/2007

After reading all of the great reviews, I was still skeptical. After all, it's in Fisherman's Wharf, it's for tourists. Well, two SF residents an an out-of-towner found this restaurant a pleasant surprise. Two arrived 1 hr. earlier for a 6:30p reservation on Friday night. We were greeted pleasantly , but, realized we should wait in the bar area until the 3rd arrived. My guest ordered a drink from the past, a Nutty Irish, and exclaimed to the bartender that it was ""delicious""! After being seated at our table, our waiter, Jeffrey, was extremely attentive, knowledgeable and recommended menu items that we optioned to order. The skewed grilled (6 large) shrimp appetizer was perfect, as was the sourdough and warm onion bread with flavored dipping oil. My guest and I are American Italian; she ordered Gnocchi in a pesto cream sauce and I the Shrimp Fettucine, (pastas are all homemade). She declared it the ""best"" outside of her mom's. Mine was delicious, too! Perfect portions, no leftovers, but room for a shared Chocolate Creme Brulee. As for the 3rd dinner, Fish and Chips, the fish, beer battered, delicate tender pieces, were excellent, but the chips, regular fries were overcooked, too dark and were left uneaten. One large scoop of (homemade?) vanilla ice cream, coffee with refills, rounded off our wonderful dining experience, which also included live music in the nearby bar area. The food prices were shockingly reasonable, under $30 each! Bar prices $7 to $8 ea. Well, what can I say? Anytime I'm in the area, I will stop in for food, drink, excellent friendly service and live music. I was impressed! \r P.S. We took public transportation, a short walk from the ""F"" car's last stop. Our late guest drove and parked, no charge, behind the restaurant. Amazing! Great ambiance, service, and quality 8/7/2007

Wife & I stopped there based on other reviews over an anniversary weekend. A chilly walk from Pier 39, it was a pleasant place to dine and relax. The live Jazz music combo was a nice touch, although the bartender was rather staid (re: boring) but he was working alone. I had the beef ravioli, and while the taste was good, the portion seemed small. There were 25 mini raviolis according to the waiter, so that's 25 slow bites. Bread was fresh and tasty, and manager made rounds to each table. Wife had a seafood combo that she said was very good, but she did have to pick apart the clams, contrary to what the waiter implied. We had an excellent bottle of Riesling Wine (by Clean Slate Winery), and dinner total was about $60. We had plenty of open seating & didn't need the reservation (Thurs night). Best Restaurant on Fisherman's Wharf! 7/26/2007

I first discovered Capurro's on a trip to Fisherman's Wharf with my family who were visiting from out of town--I live here in San Francisco. Capurro's made such an impression on me that I have returned on several occasions with different groups of friends and have yet to be disappointed in any way. Unlike most restaurants on Fisherman's Wharf, Capurro's is newly built and so is clean, spacious and beautifully decorated with mahogany beams in the ceiling, a fabulous mahogany bar, and big comfortable booths. There is a cosy, welcoming atmosphere despite its size. This welcoming atmosphere is not only created by the decor; Capurro's is owned and run by the Capurro family, most of whom are there all the time and are extremely attentive. Because I have been several times now I have gotten to know Paul and Lou (father and son) and they truly make their guests feel like family too. There is also a jazz trio which provides free entertainment Thursday through Sunday--I've even seen people up dancing! Most importantly, the food at Capurro's is out of this world! They have changed the menu several times since I have been going, and each time it gets better. I highly recommend the pizzas and of course, the fresh seafood which they get straight off the boat from the local fishermen. The meat raviolis are an old family recipe and are made by hand by Paul Capurro himself--they are to die for! And all their desserts are homemade also--the flourless chocolate cake and the chocolate creme brulee are a must. In short, Capurro's is the full package: excellent food, excellent service and a wonderful atmosphere. San Franciscans shouldn't wait til they have out of town guests to make the trip to the Wharf to see what Capurro's has to offer. Pros: Food, Parking, Family run, ambience more

Best on the Wharf!!! 1/5/2007

We spent 10 days in SF and ate everywhere. This was by far the best place on Fisherman's Wharf. Its clean, comfortable, contemporary and features old pictures of the SF Wharf and Fishermen. We had a hearty breakfast, and then an amazing dinner. There was a live jazz trio and a great crowd. The owner walked around and talked to all the tables and the service was friendly, prompt and knowledgable. ORDER THE RAVIOLIS AND THE CREME BRULEE. And the best part, is that the prices are reasonable. Outstanding, we will be back!! Pros: Clean, great food, great prices Cons: it was too cold to eat on the patio! more

Great food/place on the Wharf - avoid high prices and crowds at other wharf restaurants 9/21/2006

Excellent menu with fine seafood selections and Italian dishes. Very friendly atmosphere and great service. Also, moderately priced for a classy place. I have been there many times and tried many of the dishes - they are all very good. Try the calimari and/or crabcakes for appetizers. Also, they have a nice bar with good happy hour deals and it is great place to hang out and have a drink and watch a game too. Great seafood and bar right by the wharf. 9/21/2006

This reastaurant has it all. Some of the best seafood in the city right on the wharf. A great bar with happy hour and a complete selection of specialty drinks and great wine list. The best calamari as well as great risotto, if you like it creamy. Open kitchen which allows you to see the chef at work preparing all of your food fresh. Great windows on Jefferson St. that slide open so that you feel as if you are outside when the weather is nice. Very clean along with great, friendly service. Also offers the best bread and olive oil in the city, with olive oil on every table imported form Palermo, Sicily. Everyone must give a try. Perfect for casual lunch or Fine Dining in the Evening 9/21/2006

Anyone who visits the Wharf must stop by this wonderful family owned restaurant. The friendly staff does everything possible to make your dining experience a memorable one. Walk in for a casual lunch and enjoy an amazing sandwich or the famous Wharf Burger. Seafood lovers will enjoy the Calamari which is cooked to perfection. The bar has a great selection of beers on tap as well as a wonderful selection of wines. There is a very nice happy hour, with live jazz music on mosts evenings. The decor of the restaurant is very welcoming with many photographs of the history of San Francisco along with the Capurro family's history. Enjoy a fine dining experience in the evening with a variety of selections on the menu. The seafood is very fresh and flavorful. Enjoy the bruschetta to start, or have a bowl of San Francisco's famous clam chowder. The restaurant is perfect for a small intimate dinner, as well as large parties. Good Quick Lunch Spot 9/21/2006

Stopped in for lunch and sat on the outside patio. I had great pizza, nice thin crust individual pizza and a nice cold IPA. I needed to back to work quickly, the place was packed and I was in and out of there in 30 mins. Nice spot and I will be back there for sure... Best place to eat on the Wharf 9/9/2006

My family came into the city for the weekend and I was forced to play tour guide. Our fist stop was fishermans wharf. After walking by at least three million restaurants and souvenir shops and one bum jumping out of a bussh and scaring people, we were all getting hungry. As we were at the end of the wharf about to hop on the cable car we passed one last restaurant, the live music playing in the bar pulled us in for a happy hour drink break. After sucking down one of their specialty cocktails my family and I decided to stay for dinner. The four of us were sat in a nice big leather booth and our server was promptly there to get us started. After looking at the menu for a few minutes we were all having trouble deciding between several items. The server highlighted some of the signature dishes to make our decision easier. We settled on crab cakes and calamari to start. The crab cakes were great and full of crab. The calamari had the best breading that I have ever had. My dad had the halibut that was wrapped in proscuitto, the ""chefs specialty"" we were told, and it was awesome!! nice and juicy with the crispy proscuitto crust. My mom had the chicken that was stuffed, I am not really sure with what because she ate it all before I could get a bite. I had the lamb that was done on the charbroiler, best lamb I have ever had, nice and smokey from the mesquite and perfectly cooked. We finished off the meal with some irish coffees and house made flourless chocolate cake. So after wasting a perfectly good weekend showing the family around at least I found a good new restaurant to go to. Pros: Food, Service, Drinks more

Great Breakfast / Reasonably Priced 9/4/2006

My family and I were in San Francisco for the Labor Day Weekend and when we got to Fisherman's Wharf, several locals told us that ""Capurro's"" was the place to go for breakfast. On that advice we went there for breakfast on Sat. morning and were quite impressed. The place was absolutely packed and we had to wait for twenty minutes in the bar area, which after a great bloody mary didn't seem that long at all. When we finally got a table our waitress was cheerfull and prompt, we had a few questions about the menu which she handled very well and our breakfast was at our table in no time at all. All the food was great, I had french toast which is made on their homemade cinnamon bread, the kids split a stack of pancakes and my wife had an omelette that she said was one of the best she's ever had. We enjoyed the place so much we went back Sunday and Monday with the same results. In short if you find yourself on Fisherman's Wharf go to Capurro's...it's a great spot. P.S. Check out all the old pictures on the walls they are great and chronicle the Capurro family's history on the Wharf. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing we saw more

An elegant classy spot for a fantastic meal with warm san francisco hospitality and charm 8/31/2006

Capurro's is simply put, not just a restaurant to eat a meal in but an experience. I stumbled upon this place a couple of years ago when it was much smaller and simpler in atmosphere. Back then it was frequented by a mix of local fisherman operating boats out of the wharf getting drinks and warm meals at the bar and tourists coming in for meals at the tables. I was amazed to see the restaurant was completely rebuilt and reopened in early 2006 under the current name. The same fun warm atmoshere true to its original routes (where the owners and managers and waiters, all Italian family members by the way, come around and talk to us customers and make sure we are happy and enjoying ourselves) is still present and the reasonable value still exists. The place looks wise and menu wise however, is a completely new and wonderful experience. The place has an old feel of classic san francisco with all the modern amenities that i like in a restaurant including great lighting, an open kitchen, comfortable seating, and a sweet bar area (with some original cocktails which the head bartender apparently has won san francisco drink competitions with). What really speaks for itself though in addition to the warm atmoshere, is the great food. You have to try the Oyster's Capurro if you like fresh oysters. All the seafood at Capurro's that I have sampled-- the fresh fish and dungenous crab at Capurro's has been amazing. Other people I have dined have said the meat and pasta dishes, especially the ravioli (apparently a secret old family recipe) are also devine, but I am such a seafood lover and Capurro's does it so well, I have yet to get past this staple. more

Diamond in the Wharf 8/27/2006

Most the wharf is for people wanting a taste of the history of San Francisco but this restaurant has ""real hsitory"" and fantastic food in a very ""non tourist"" setting and the food is excellent. I have been here for several large events and several casual dinners, every time has been a great experience. The beer is always cold and the steaks are awesome and reasonable. Love the location as a local, I rarely get down to this part of town and I now have a new favorite spot. Fresh fish too. The atomosphere is classy and tasteful. Great to watch a game at the bar too. Glad the remodel is done and thanks for doing everything right. Pros: Outdoor Dining is coming ...according to the owner Cons: Outdoor dining is not there yet. more

Great music and the best pesto sauce in town....the place rocks. 8/12/2006

Finally, something reminiscent of my past: Italian family-style dining akin to Little Italy in the Bronx --- except Capurro's gives you a menu and let's you decide what you want to eat. Took mom to Capurro's and we both loved everything about it. I'm a huge pesto fan and you should NOT leave the restaurant without trying something on the menu that offers it: My favorite is the gnocci and pesto. The place is big and spacious and elegant (fine dining without killing the pocket book -- dates central) and the staff seems to go out of its way to make you feel like you're ""part of the family."" They also have a great jazz trio and their baked goods are ridiculously good (homeade, the waiter said) and there's parking in the back lot (which is crazy amazing for the wharf!). Overall, just loved the experience here. This is the last example of a true, not-so-touristic wharf dining experience. more

Best San Francisco Authentic Italian Family Cuisine. The Pearl of Fisherman's Wharf. 8/11/2006

The daily handmade raviolis say it all, because when we tasted the food it was enough to make us write this and post it. According to our waiter they recently reopened the restaurant and it is brand new, and still owned and operated by the same family since many years ago.\r \r My wife and I dined at Capurros on Jefferson at Hyde this weekend and we were treated like family with a warm welcome and prompt service. I have to admit the cocktails were nice after a long day, and our Caesars salads came right on time. The salad was fresh, crisp and was truly delicious. They bake all their bread fresh in house daily, which I found out when they served it warm and mentioned it was just out of the oven. My wifes seafood was perfect (she is picky), and my raviolis were really something special. \r \r Dont miss this one!! And we will be back soon. Pros: Good Service, Outstanding Food, On Fisherman's Wharf Cons: Bring a sweater if your not from San Francisco. more
