Bleh 11/7/2011

I had been to this place before and was SO excited to go back. It turned out to be completely underwhelming. Three of us had to send our main courses back because they were cold. Another sent it back again because it was tough. I was really disappointed, the last meal I had there was AMAZING! But this one really fell short. Wonderful wait staff, great wine. But I won't take a chance on this place again, not after paying a lot of money for not very good food. more

Fabulous As Ever. A gem! 10/7/2010

We've enjoyed the wonderful and excellent Aliseo's for years but hadn't been there for awhile, so I was a little worried when I invited some friends and then saw the recent reviews here. My fears were unfounded though as the food, atmosphere, and service were all just as fabulous as ever! My out-of-town friends (one of whom had gone to a culinary arts school and was celebrating her birthday that night) could not have been more pleased and impressed. The food was absolutely amazing and the owners and staff were very friendly and gracious--and not expensive at all. A gem. Highly recommended!! more

Mediocre food, Arrogant Host 10/5/2010

My wife and I loved this restaurant a few years back, but wow has it gone downhill- The waitstaff are pleasant and jovial, but the owner seemed a bit full of himself, as though he were doing us a favor for being there. The food was a disappointing mediocre at best (especially for the price), not at all authentic Italian cuisine that I know well, and certainly not the type of fare that we enjoyed there before. The wine list is an interesting showing of Marche wines amongst others, but we had longed for the type of gastronomic experience we had before and were disappointed. We live in the neighborhood, and we will not be returning to this ""neighborhood osteria"". more

Poor Food, Poor Service 9/2/2010

This restaurant used to be excellent, but something has happened. Last night the wife and I went for our anniversary. Despite us being the only customers in the place the service was slow, as the staff were hanging out and drinking. The food was poor to average, which is not good enough considering the price. Formerly we loved this restaurant but we won't be going again. more

What would the dining room at home feel like if you what wou 3/19/2009

When my wife, who is Italian is feeling homesick this where we head. Until the kitchen opened here going out to dinner for Italian food was not an option. Home cooking was available only in our own kitchen. Thanks to the staff here, and especially Albano, we can satify our spirits and our love of food at ""Aliseo."" You must try it, if only to satisfy your longing for authentic Italian food more

i love this place! 11/21/2008

This place is so romantic. A true gem. the lighting and decor is charming, the food is wonderful. great recommendations and friendly waiter. i love the little grotto in the back. Pros: romantic, great food, friendly Cons: small space, not inexpensive more

'special treat' dinner 12/24/2007

We love good food and cook very well and elaborate ourselves, but this is where we go for that special dinner every now and then. We love the atmosphere (like sitting in someones livingroom), always enjoy the service and expert advice on what to eat and drink with it and always leave feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. more

you'll swear you were in italy! 12/20/2007

My boyfriend and I had been meaning to try this restaurant for some time because we now live in the neighborhood. When I walk down Vanderbilt Ave in the day, I'll peer through the window, and I regularly see the chef rolling fresh pasta. We'll, we went to dinner last week and I can say that it was the best italian food we've ever had in NY. We have traveled in Italy a couple of times, and have tried many of the italian restaurants in our neighborhood. We can confidently say that it is better than Al Di La, Franny's or Locanda. This restaurant is not just authetic, it is exceptional! Pros: ambiance, service, food Cons: limited coffee selection more

overrated food, arrogant ""chef"" 11/1/2007

we had reservations for 8 pm. showed up at 7:50, waited until 9 PM for our table, with NO apologies. we stood outside in the cold, and for compensation we were given wine in DIXIE CUPS. nothing was comped for our troubles, and to top it off, the owner insulted me when he found out my relatives were from southern italy, a standard ""no no"" for the northern italian snobs. shockingly bad, all around. the average food didn't make it any better. more

Prospect Heights' Best Kept Secret 9/22/2007

I'm a little hesitant to write this review, because by nature it reveals my best kept Prospect Heights secret; Aliseo. But alas, my commitment to its success trumps my urge to keep it mine forever. So without further ado, here is my review: more

Very pretty place 7/21/2007

Really liked this restaurant. From our pasta dishes to our sea food dishes to the homemade desserts, Aliseo was spot on throughout. We liked the wine selections as well and the waitstaff was very helpful and attentive.DO NOT leave without trying the pecorino cheese panacota with red wine cured figs Pros: Romantic more

Expensive for a neighborhood Italian 7/6/2007

My boyfriend and I had dinner there one night last month and initially received a lot of attention from the waiter (too much, he didn't know when to stop talking and was slightly arrogant), until it got busier - then we were left alone for a very long time! The bread was delicious, the salads were very fresh, our pasta dishes were good and the tiramisu was excellent - but none of it was worth the prices. At the end of our meal, the waiter told us we must try a certain dessert wine and rushed off to get it for us, which normally indicates it's on the house. However, he charged us for one glass. Other tables were also getting the dessert wine offered and we wondered if they were also charged. Overall, if it were less expensive, we'd return, but there are other as good, cheaper Italian restaurants in Brooklyn. Pros: fresh food, nice wine Cons: expensive for what it is, arrogant waiter more

Real Italian, Daily made Pasta 5/6/2007

This little place is spectacular, not only for the delicious food, spectacular choices of wine, but for the neighborhoods atmosphere. everybody seems to know the owner, and although crowded [reservations required] the place feel like someones home. thumbs up! Pros: romantic neighborly ambiance with inexpensive gormet dining. in manhattan this would cost three times the price! Cons: packed. tight but the friendly atmosphere makes it comfortable more

great food, excellent and personable service 9/28/2006

Delicious food, and a very nice atmosphere. The staff really take pride in their work, and recommended delicious wines. The waiter obviously knew a lot about wines and pairing, without being pretentious. A wonderful place to sit and stay for a while. more

nice bites, lacking in service 8/2/2006

This was a unique experience with some fresh, mouth-pleasing fare (savory flan, white anchovies, cheeses and breads), but we found the service neglectful and bordering on unfriendly. It's a mellow Italian-ish hang-out that's good for atmosphere, a few bites to eat, and a good wine list. The pasta dish we had was only average. more

disgusting... 7/26/2006

put it this way, while eating, a cockr@ach crawled on our table to join us. when we aleted the owner, he didnt apologize or anything just brushed it off and that was all. was pretty much in disbelief, not at the r@ach but the arrogance of the owner. no apolgy, no nothing. the owner is just like the restaurant a real loser! Pros: nothing Cons: not enogh space.... more

the perfect evening4 hours worth.... 4/8/2006

first is the decor, perfectly simple and appropriate to the fare. second is the staff, Owner Albano was ""into it"" working on hosting the evening and setting the president and with the attentiveness of Andrea who really knows his wine and how to make a customer feel welcome they make a powerful pair. We visited during dine in Brooklyn week and now have another new favorite spot in the neighborhood. The fig roll, the grilled fennel, the pork shoulder, the artichoke/mushroom lasagna, the seafood soup, the BREAD!!!, the orange cured olivesall wonderful. rarely do you have a dining experience so complete. for dessert we had the cheese plate and the panna cotta accompanied by 2 select dessert wines that Andrea recommended and was spot on again. To wrap. go to italy, eat and drink. come back and go here. then you'll really ""get it"" Pros: the people, the bread, the food Cons: the price, the price, did I mention the $$$ more

Time for a change 5/8/2005

This is a nice small neighborhood restaurant that is stuck in its ways. What a pleasure it was when it first opened! Very cozy if almost but not quite cramped. Slightly overpriced but one was willing to pay for the ambiance and intersting tastes. However, the menu is very short and the choices have hardly changed since opening several years ago. The appetizers are generally overpriced as is much of the wine. Still it is a very pleasant place to drop in. Pros: Ambiance, Convenience Cons: Price more

disappointed 10/3/2004

i wanted very much to like this neighborhood restaurant, but was extraordinarily disappointed. the food was rather uninspired, and the service, pushy. dishes were simply entirely too dull and questionably executed to justify the price. more

An Italian Corner 4/6/2003

Attention to details, excellent wines, bites of old memories: that's what I found in this cute, little place. You don't want to go there just to ""eat"", but to indulge in a truly Italian experience! more
