Amazing 10/2/2010

This is an awesome little cigar lounge. More and more, they are becoming rarities in a city that is anti-smoking. We grabbed a couple cigars from De La Concha on Ave of Americas which is a block away and enjoyed the ambiance of this bar. It is stylized like an old 1940s bar and is very warm. The patrons were extremely friendly to us. more

My favorite place 8/10/2010

I've been coming here for a little over a year now. Actually, I've made The Carnegie Club my second home these past few months. I love this place. Anyone and everyone I introduce to the Club has had nothing but the best things to say about it. My sister, for example, is a non-smoker who found herself so comfortable and at ease here that she now frequents the place herself. I take offense to the negative comments written about the wait staff here. They have been nothing but wonderful, gracious and welcoming. My only qualm is that the cigar selection is very limited. While there is a cigar for whatever mood you may be in, there is simply only one cigar. HOWEVER, this is not a problem if you go to the cigar shop on 6th ave b/w 56th & 57th prior to entering the Club (but on the same day), as the Club will waive cutting charges for such cigars. They acknowledge the issue and provide a remedy. What more could you ask for? Love it. Will keep going back. Ali more

Good after-work stopover... 1/23/2010

Friends and I met at Carnegie a couple weeks ago after work, and one, who was wearing jeans with athletic shoes, was advised he wasn't welcome unless he was wearing proper shoes and a collared shirt. We ended up having to leave and go elsewhere, and were charged a $10 tobacco consumption fee. Not a big deal, but it wound up costing up far too much as a result for two drinks and a pack of Marlboro Lights for another friend of mine. The space is nice, comfortable, well laid out and maintained and the staff is friendly and easy-going; aside from the smell of stale cigar smoke, it's an ideal destination especially after work for a cigar and a drink. It's a bit pricey, and they should have deleted that $10 fee, but otherwise, we'll go back and we'll enjoy our cigars and drinks there again without hesitation., Pros: Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, friendly, attentive staff Cons: Pricey more

Response to Worst Staff Ever 3/8/2009

I am quite surprised to discover such a negative review and personal attack of the staff at the Carnegie Club. I regularly visit and have found the staff extremely pleasant, professional and warm. I find the citicism of the "farmer" waitress with the glasses to be particularly unfounded and distorted. I have not encountered a more charming, gracious and helpful waitress ever. I suspect the complainant has other issues other than the demeanor of the staff. I laud them. more

NYC's Hidden Treasure!!!! 2/10/2009

Last week my husband and I wondered into The Carnegie Club after a performance at Carnegie Hall. The place wasn't terribly crowded, but busy enough that we were inclined to stay. We were greeted upon entering the establishment by the manager, who was impressively dressed and very personable as he brought us to our table. Our waitress Kat was very kind and helpful as well! As per Kat's suggestion I had the Carnegie Cocktail (my new favorite drink!) while my husband enjoyed a nice scotch. I am not fond of smoke of any kind, yet surprisingly enough there must be some super secret ventilation system because I did not have a problem with it the entire time we were there! Even while my husband smoked his cigar sitting right next to me! I have attempted to join my husband at other cigar lounges in the city and have had to leave almost immediately, however this was not the case at Carnegie Club! All in all I have to say the staff was very friendly and the service was impeccable! Carnegie Club is a great place for anyone, whether for a quite drink or a stop on a night out with friends! My husband has been back three times within these last few weeks and we plan on celebrating our friends birthday there next Saturday night for the Sinatra show, which we have heard rave reviews!! Pros: Ventilation, service, prices Cons: minimal food menu more

Attention Smokers and Non-Smokers... 2/10/2009

I HIGHLY disagree with the previous two reviews. My girlfriend and I stopped by on a Friday a few weeks ago for a couple of drinks and a cigar. The second we walked through the door, we were immediately greeted by an enthusiastic hostess with a huge smile on her face. She sat us and we were then approached by our very friendly waitress. She was very respectful and professional, and her knowledge of the cigars was quite impressive. My girlfriend is not a cigar smoker, and in fact, this was her first time ever trying one. Our server gave us a well detailed description of several of the cigars on the menu as to help my girlfriend find a suitable cigar for her first experience. Her recommendations were more than helpful and on point! Not only did my girlfriend enjoy her first cigar smoking experience, but she now wants to come back and try another one! In addition to the cigars, we were revisited by our server several times as to make sure we always had the drinks we needed. The busboys emptied our ashtrays, cleared our empty glasses, and even when our server checked on us, the busboys too would check on us to make sure we were comfortable and satisfied. The environment was relaxing and The As-Is Ensemble jazz band only made us stay longer for another round of drinks. I have recommended The Carnegie Club to several of my friends and they too have mentioned that their experience was nothing less than ours. We even came back on a Saturday to see the Sinatra show and our experience was exactly the same. Great service, entertaining music, and overall a wonderful atmosphere for a night out with friends. more

Staff 2/9/2009

I agree with the previous review. The staff was not up to par with the upscale Carnegie Club, it seems to have really deteriorated in the last few months. Note to the manager it might be time for a complete overhaul and a totally new staff. more

Worst staff ever!!! 1/30/2009

Last night as usual I went to Carnegie Club to enjoy nice relaxing evening with my girl, but instead I receive a rude service and an attitude from a waitress and a bartender who pretend to be a manager. One advice for the real manager:next time you hiring staff for this amazing cigar bar make sure that they are not farmers{waitress with the glasses and younger bartender who pretend to be a manager}and that they at least have some manners. The bartender approach me with the stupid question:"What's the problem?".This is not a question of a real manager. As I sad only a farmer can ask a customer such a thing.Advice to the owner:Sophisticated place like yours, deserve a better waitstaff. They give you bad reputation!!!!And with so many people looking for a job right now,you can find better people, that fit in your place!!!Besides that I love Carnegie Club,it's one of my favorite places, and I always recommended to the customers in my restaurant!!!But I"ll think for the next time!!One person that really deserves a respect is JOEL the busboy!very kind and helpful.I hope that you'll take a note, otherwise you losing customers, and I think now is the worst time for it!!!!!!!!!!! more

Great Cigar Smoking Bar 1/15/2009

I'm from Charlotte so I went to Carnegies to watch Giants / Panthers football game at the bar, had a fine cigar with even finer local gentlemen. Bartender was friendly and efficient and the food was good as well, I will return on my next trip to New York more

THE BEST IN NYC 1/3/2009

This is a cigar smokers heaven. My wife and I were in NYC for a long weekend and stumbled across this jewel on a Friday night. We had so much fun we came back the next night for the Sinatra night. What a blast. Good laughts, great music, excellent drinks brought to you by beautiful and attentive young ladies; I could go on and on. By the end of the evening we were on a first name basis with the owner, Ken, the manager, the bartender and half of the staff and we had made dozens of new friends. We really felt welcomed. I would recommend this place to anyone - except, anyone that doesn't like smoke. But, lets face it, if you go to a cigar bar expecting to not get a little smoke in your eyes then you've never been in a cigar bar. We will be back - no question about it. Pros: The drinks, the staff, the cigars, the new friends we made, and on and on and on...... Cons: Not a place for the anti-smoking activists. more

Classic - go back in time 11/11/2008

I lived right down the street form this place an it took my brother visiting from Buffalo to get me to check it out - you know how that goes. It turned out to be a real nice find - a gem. I have always been a Sinatra fan and because of my age - I never had the opportunity to see him perform live. My perception of how he played small clubs is pretty much what I found at the Carnegie Club. The 11 piece band did a nice job of cranking out the music - while the singer did a wonderful job not only singing those old tune but telling interesting Sinatra stories in between songs. Yes, it was a little too smoky from the cigars - Yes it was hard to see the stage and yes it was a little too crowded but I just gotta believe that's what some of his shows were like. It was all that and great! We had a really good time and hope to return again real soon. Ova-Nee more

Delightful Evening 8/18/2008

I work on the block and wish I had known about this place long ago. I was introduced by an associate after work on a Friday and returned the next night with my wife to see tha Sinatra show. What an amazing evening. This place is like going back in time. The waitresses are all dressed in black and pearls and attend quickly to every request. The drinks are a amazing, and where else will you find a big band in a bar with Sinatra. I am not much of a cigar smoker but the staff was very good with recomendations. Don't walk run to the Carnegie Club, I will be back. more

Jazz Heaven 8/18/2008

I have found a treasure if you are a Jazz fan. This club was made for music and they have it. I stumbled in by accident after seeing the spinning martini glass on the ground and hearing a band. I spent 3 hours listening to Michael Bellar play while sitting a couch and beautiful women brought me singlemalt all the while smoking!!! It was like a private concert in my living room. Nothing could have been better this place... I thought.. then I went back on Friday and I discovered the Mark Rapp trio who were equally amazing. This place should be packed every night. You no longer need to go downtown for Jazz. Pros: Music, Staff, Atmosphere Cons: Little hard to find more

TERRIBLE 7/30/2008

My date and I had the worst time there. The service was slow (and we had drinks spilled on us), the bar was over-crowded, and there was a bad smell there. Also, the bathrooms were filthy. I will definitely never return. more

They should've done better. 2/10/2007

I had a bad experience at Garnegie Club. I was hoping to enjoy some Sinatra songs at a old style environment but I didn't expect to see dusty ceilings, dirty couches and carpets plus their venting system isn't designed for a cigar house, i was hardly open my eyes although I'm a smoker myself. You might want to try hard to get someone on the phone to make a reservation by the number listed on their website if you want to be treated as a paying customer. I had to wait 20 minutes for a table and been moved around before they made a decision on where they wanted me to be seated. Unfortunately, we had to leave after the first show because they tried to move us again for a larger group of guests and we refused to be moved as we've got tired of this manner. Two of us paid $150 (with tips) for all these services I mentioned above in two hours. Pros: Steve does sound like sinatra. Cons: bad environmen, bad management. more

Owner Message
  • Considered one of the most desirable event locations in New York, The Carnegie Club is a magnificent space that's both grand (25-foot ceilings with a mezzanine) and intimage. It provides a uniquely Gothic backdrop with hand-carved 18th century bookcases filled with a wide assortment of leather-bound titles and a stone fireplace - all of which is offset by plush, contemporary furnishings.

Offering an elegant and stylish atmosphere, The Carnegie Club provides an upscale backdrop for virtually all types of events. Conveniently located behind Carnegie Hall, directly next to City Center, and a short walk to the Theatre District; this space can accomodate up to 175 guests for a cocktail reception and 75 guests for a seated dinner.

Editorial
  • The Scene
With cozy sofas, art-deco wallpaper and top-notch performances, the Carnegie Club offers the charm and sophistication of old New York without seeming kitschy or retro. Waitresses in cocktail dresses and pearls look like they've stepped out of an Audrey Hepburn movie, and bookshelves are as well-stocked as the bar. Sip a Moscow Mule, Aviation Cocktail or Carnegie Confetti--champagne sweetened with honey liqueur, pineapple juice and fresh fruit.

    The Draw
Old-time jazz is piped in on weeknights, but weekends boast grand live performances. Finish up your Friday with live jazz presented by trumpeter and composer Mark Rapp, or check out the Saturday night mainstay--an evocative Sinatra tribute with vocalist Cary Hoffman and an 11-piece orchestra. Sightlines to the band are limited on the balcony, but you can still enjoy the space by imagining Ol' Blue Eyes on stage.
