Go one block up! 8/25/2010

Curries here are greasy, badly seasoned, and occasionally food-poisoning. They make OK naan, but then wrap it in foil so it gets soggy. Even samosas are rancid and stale ... I suspect that they just keep them until they sell, no matter how long that takes. Service is counter-only and is grumpy and inattentive. Sometimes they like to overcharge customers, and often they forget parts of your order. You want cheap Indian? Go one block up. Check the reviews at the other locations: the whole Tikka Masala chain is the worst Indian food in the Bay Area. more

Your food sucks. I'm sorry, but it's just TERRIBLE. How is this restaurant still open? It must be the cheap rent and the underpaid illegal employees who pay the bills. more

Food Poisoning!!! 8/22/2010

I've eaten at about hundred different Indian restaurants over the years. Being new to San Francisco I thought I should try out Tikka Masala. I got EXTREMELY sick after ordering food from here, I literally vomited for about two days and couldn't eat anything. if you take a closer look, the place is filthy, and the staff looks like they haven't seen a bar of soap in days. And the old Indian guy that works the counter (perhaps runs the place?) is an unfriendly prick. more

Terrible Experience! 8/17/2010

Overall, both the food and the experience were pretty awful. Not to mention the prices were a little steep for what we got. If you want real Indian food, go up the street and find Lahore Karahi and make it your go-to place. The food there is miles ahead of this terrible excuse for an indian restaurant. Ant the rice is clearly drawn from a pot sitting for ages. It was clumpy, sticky, and just not even close to fresh. The TV was annoying us with an expired football game and then ""hillbilly hand-fishing,"" and the owner told us we could change it to whatever we wanted...WE WANTED PEACE! more

It's terribly mediocre! 8/11/2010

The old man here has some serious difficulty in dealing with women? The waiter all but ignored me, going so far as to walk up to our table and address solely my boyfriend with a, ""How is everything, sir?"" while being all scowls at me. I thought I was being paranoid until I said something afterwards, and had my suspicions confirmed. Not a good impression to be leaving on your customers! I'm telling you - this place isn't for me. If you're looking for good food, you'd be better served having Indian food one block up the street, or a slice of pizza around the corner.....I wouldn't bother with this place. more

Unsatisfying... 8/9/2010

What a disappointment! I hadn't been to this place in a year until a few days ago. The food was tasteless. Darn! And the noise level was ugly - it seems like a soup kitchen for creepy taxi drivers! more

Absolutely horrible meal! 8/8/2010

Very unfriendly service, and a rather bland menu makes this not noteworthy of any repeat visits. Disappointing. more

Terrible service! Don't waste your money! 8/5/2010

Nothing like what someone expects from a restaurant. There are far too many better choices in the Tenderloin. Terrible service! Don't waste your money. The food is too oily on top of that... I've seen cockroaches and mice droppings all over the floor. more

Expensive and Not Satisfying 8/4/2010

It's all the same gravy, different names - tons of onion and tomatoes - very little main ingredients. The owner seems to spend more time gossiping, smoking, and watching TV than do take orders or helping out the patrons. more

Very disappointed! 8/4/2010

All I can say is that the quality of the food is very bad. The server even admitted some of their dishes are almost a week old. And it doesn't taste Indian at all. You can view the whole kitchen from the counter which is very very dirty and disgusting. I wouldn't recommend anybody to go there. Don't waste your money here. All I can say is, ""save your money and time"". more

I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE. 1/4/2010

The food is just perfect. It's actually something that you would expect your mom cooking (if you're indian or pakistani). It's so good, it makes your mouth water. Try the Goat Biryani. It's the BEST. Pros: Best food. Cons: Nothing! more

My favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant! 5/9/2009

This is my favorite Indian/Pakistani restaurant in and around the Bay Area. I have been going there for at least a year, and if you love authentic Indian/Pakistani food but would rather not eat all the cream or yogurt sauces then this is your place. They have awesome Saag Paneer (Spinach and homemade cheese). Other favorites are Biryani, Chicken Karahi, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Daal. You should try for yourself! Pros: Best Chicken Tikka Masala; and a very clean environment more

Excellent Indian Cuisine! 5/6/2009

This is the first time that I am writing a review for any restaurant. My husband and I were quite unhappy with the kind of Indian food we were having until we’ve found the Indian restaurant on Ellis. The food here is very authentic and tasty. I would definitely recommend this to my friends. Pros: Awesome Food! Cons: Addictive! more

I've managed to not actually cry out ""OOH!"" but it was not easy. I ate there two nights on a recent trip (stayed at the Hilton). Excellent quality, attentive service, and generous portions. Pros: Great food! Clean, and stays open late! more

Real authentic taste of Indian and Pakistani food 4/24/2009

am an Indian and I am here in San Francisco for more than a year. I was at this place for just one reason, to find real authentic taste of Indian and Pakistani food. Surprisingly I was amazed to find such a great taste in a place in downtown San Francisco where people don't usually visit often. I tried Chicken Tikka masala and the famous Sindhi Biryani, they are the best I've ever tasted in the whole city. I can guarantee that this place has the most delicious dishes from Indian and Pakistan. After the first visit I am a regular goer to this place. Must tries are, Chicken Tikka Masala, All their Lamb and Goat Dishes and dont forget their Biryani's and Fresh Naan's. Your visit to this place dont go waste, that's a promise from me. Pros: Neat Restaurant, Great food in affordable price Cons: The street where it is located more

Editorial review from GrubHub 2/23/2008

We *love* their food. their Spinach (Saag Paneer) is excellent, their Califlower & Potato (Aloo Gobi) is very good and their Eggplant (Baigan Bharta) is our absolute favorite. \r \r The Masala's have a little too much sauce for our taste, since we don't get naan with our meal. If you do they taste very good. \r \r We find their dishes excellent overall and our friends raved about their food during our Superbowl Party. more
