Editorial review from Citysearch 12/15/2012

Went to Cactus Grille on 12/15/12 the place empty and we thought it was closed because there were no cars in the lot. After going inside and being seated by the bartender we soon found out why. The place was cold dark and stinky I don't think I will ever forget my wife's face. Then we can hear some guys at the bar or someone in the kitchen swearing. The place was dirty. The mirror on the wall looks like it has never been cleaned the table was sticky and had food residue on it. I though of the show Restaurant Impossible, the owner should watch the show and then call them. The food wasn't that bad but I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. We had burritos my wife didn't even eat half, I ate mine but I was starving. I would give it a 6 out of 10, nothing special. Needless to say I don't think I will ever be back to the Cactus Grille. I know I will never be there with wife. The prices were a little ridiculous also. Like another review states ""your better of grabbing some Taco Bell and a six pack and eating you own clean cozy home. more

Awful 4/29/2012

I would never recommend this place to anyone! Poor customer service (except for a patron walking by our table asked what we were having ..lol)The waitress barely spoke.Which made me wonder if she knew anything about the menu. She never asked if we needed anything or if everything was ok.I was constantly looking for her, napkins, drinks, etc. The chips were cold and stale.I asked for them to be heated and to have cheese added. They came back hard and over heated. My burrito was lukewarm but edible. My husband's burrito was replaced with a fajita.Waitress messed up our order. But she did manage to bring his burrito dish back in 5 minutes. The beef was raw! We didn't dare send another item back.(I know a few chefs. You never send a second item back to the chef..I gave my husband my dinner. We did get credit for his meal.I think we just went on a bad night and had a bad waitress.Do we dare use our other gift card??..Maybe for a few beers only. Pros: null Cons: null more

Very enjoyable mexican/american 3/20/2009

I've been to the restaurant many times over the years dating back to it's location near the Hurricane barrier, Richmond Street, and even the Smithfield location as well as the Allens Ave. site (Old HoJo). It's been an odyssey with those longing for Richmond St, probably more enamored with the bar scene than the restaurant. Agree with some of the reviews on being a bit too pricey, but the food and service negative critiques don't ring true for me. Pros: Mayan BBQ, Pork Burritos, Vegetable Fajitas, Salsa Cons: bathrooms, price more

Straight out of Kitchen Nightmares! 11/30/2008

I thought that I had walked in on an episode of reality show Kitchen Nightmares, after visiting this place. My meal (some sort of chicken enchilada) was covered in two types of glistening bargain cheese, and the chicken was very dry, and tasted like it was frozen. The coffee I ordered with desert was so weak, it tasted like tainted water. My Key lime pie was overwhelmed with whipped cream. Throughout the meal, we also had 2-3 little friends buzzing around our food, drinks, and mouths (some sort of fly). If you are in the mood for Mexican, you'd be better off just picking up some Taco Bell, and a six pack, and enjoy the comfort of your own home. You won't be missing out on any significant ambiance, and throwing away your money on an indigestible meal. Pros: The Bass Ale was fine Cons: Everything else was dry, not fresh, low standards. more

Waste of money & time!!! 8/15/2008

I used to be a huge fan of the cactus on Richmond St. as well as the one in Framingham MA...(mostly because my husband worked as a chef at them!), The service, atmosphere and quality of food USED to be outstanding. About a week ago however, I Re-visited the existing establishment due to the review i read from the new owner boasting the improvements. Pros: Plenty of Parking Cons: It's not the old Cactus from Richmond St. more

Great overall experience 6/27/2008

I have been a patron of Cactus Grille for many years. Even when it changed locations, I kept coming back for more. The bartenders, food, and total package makes for a fun, relaxing outing. I would highly suggest that people who want to enjoy good food, excellent service, and great cocktails to try it out. With so many restaurant choices in Rhode Island, we can be very picky. I have traveled a great a deal and by far I prefer Cactus Grille over all other Mexican restaurants. My favorite dish is Pasta de la casa...and the buffalo chicken grilled pizza..There have been improvements made to the restaurant recently.. If you have not been at the Cactus in awhile, try it again. I even try to get to the restaurant for lunch during the week. Great place to sit at the bar and enjoy great conversation and service with great flair. Don't wait until Cinco de Mayo. Try it now. Pros: Great cocktails, wonderful bartenders, food is the best mexican around. Cons: more bathrooms more

Cactus Grille now under very NEW Ownership 1/26/2008

As the new owner of the Cactus Grille, I read these reviews with much interest. At this point, all I can say is that changes and improvements are coming soon. Renovations, both indoor (bathrooms and tables) and outdoor (landscape and awnings) are in the works. A revised menu with better pricing is also in the works t be completed soon! Pros: No pretenses - a fun night out Cons: Alls cons are being addressed more

so bland, so overpriced 1/19/2008

Got a good review from a coworker, decided to eat here for my birthday....SO DISAPPOINTED. The place looks cool, the staff was friendly, we went at like 5pm on a Saturday night, they were playing ray charles?! and there were maybe 5 other people in the whole restaurant. None of that really bothered us tho. The part that bothered me was how horribly overpriced the food was. You get a pretty big plate of food, but it tastes like NOTHING! I got a pulled chicken burrito; it was almost as bland as the Blue Moon margarita I ordered. not impressed, not ever going again more

great customer service 1/6/2008

South Providence turns into South of The Border when you are at the Cactus Grille. The workers are friendly, and helpful to make you feel comfortable. Very attractive, and willing to please the customer. For the food its a little pricey but worth it., large portions, and free refills. I have been there a few times, but it has improved in the last months. I love Mexican food and it can be hard to find real authentic Mexican restaurants in Rhode Island, but I would recommend the Cactus Grille! Pros: waitstaff Cons: bathrooms more

Stay away on Sunday 1/6/2008

We arrived at 1:00 PM on Sunday. We were one of two couples in the whole place. The waitress took about 10 minutes to get our drink order and about 10 more to fill the darn thing. The menu was huge. You must be suspicious of a "authentic " Mexican restaurant with French Onion Soup on the menu. The place looked shoddy with beat up tables and the outdoor front awning is ripped and mildewed. We drank our Cokes and left before ordering food. Yikes. Pros: Close to the highway. Cons: Everything else that matters. more
