Grandpa's 12/21/2008

Grandpa's.. I mean Uncle's (joking) is a quaint place on 12th and locust. I was here around thanksgiving and there was a good amount of men (mostly older) and a few woman chilling, chatting, and flirting. The mood is very mellow and though it's crowded (bar stools very close together) you still feel like you're in your own space among friends. I would definitely recommend the bar for quick drinks and conversation. The employees were nice (saw the bartender getting a friendly back rub), drinks weren't too strong or too weak, and wasn't smoky when I was there! ATM, clean bathroom, and good music. Pros: Location and Atmosphere Cons: Small space more

Nice Bar but we witnessed a FIGHT TOO 9/20/2008

I was in Uncle's with 2 friends the night the bar stool fight happened. The older man was a short dark haired guy in a baseball cap who rides around in a rented LIMO or something. His friend was a dark haired Irish guy, very drunk, very on-drugs or something. A sugar daddy thing. THe older guy seemed like a control freak because soon the two began to argue. Things got worse and before we knew it things were flying in the air. Yeah, we see this guy and the fake LIMO from time to time. He has other BOY TOYS. Seems like a sick arrangement. more

Heroin and Sugar Daddy Hangout--beware 9/18/2008

I was there with a friend some months ago and we witnessed a 20 something guy throw a bar stool at his older male companion, a short guy in a baseball cap. I've seen these two before. The older man buys the younger one drinks and then trouble ensues. On this night the bar stool incident really scared people away. Word has it that the older man supplied the younger guy with heroin and alochol and this started the fight. I've seen them around town, in a limo and so forth. It is creepy. Who are they? I hear they go to the Westbury because somebody said that Uncles kicked them out. Who knows. Just be careful. Pros: nice window Cons: too crowded more

Nice neighborhood gay bar without all the pretense 7/28/2007

At Uncles, it is extremely rare that one will find the unfortunate cattiness and bitchy attitude often associated with other bars in the gayborhood. No, this is a neighborhood watering hole, plain and simple. The drinks are strong and inexpensive, the bartenders are friendly and attentive, and the music is up to you: The jukebox is in constant use so bring some dollar bills. Uncles tends to skew a bit older but I have very often walked in and found at least half the crowd consisting of twenty-somethings. It's a great place to meet up with your friends and either start the night (cheap drinks) or finish it (a relaxed night cap). A note for the uninitiated: The mens room is labeled "uncles" and the ladies room is labeled--you guessed it--"aunts." :) Pros: Cheap, strong drinks; attentive staff; friendly customers Cons: None, really more

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE 9/20/2006

Me and my girlfriend made reservations over a month ago to go to Uncles during Columbus Day weekend. When my girlfriend called now a month later to confirm the reservations because she felt a little skeptical about the place and didn't trust that the reservations were legit. So when she called, Joe (the "manager") told her that the reservation had been cancelled. I decided to call the place directly because we had planned this weekend for awhile and it wasn't right that someone out of the blue just called and cancelle our reservation. So I spoke to Joe and he said some "guy" had called and cancelled the reservation and he handled the cancellation himself and all the paper work had been shredded since the reservation had been cancelled. Then when I continued to ask for suggestions as to what we were supposed to do now, we already had our travel arrangements done and paid for, he said there was nothing he could do, didn't offer any kind of assistance or apologies for their screw up. He was rude and nasty. And it seemed a little beneficial that some guy called and cancelled when it was two girls that were staying in the room. I do not recommend this place to anyone, not even if you are desparate..... more

great place to catch the passing scene 6/30/2003

Hey, somebody's gotta comment on this gayborhood fixture. The owner is obnoxious, but fortunately, you don't have to deal with him when you visit this friendly little watering hole. The customers are a bit older on average than at the other bars, but sooner or later, a cross-section of the entire gay community (including the occasional lesbians) comes in here for decent cheap drinks and camraderie. And if they don't come in, they pass by on Locust Street--the big windows in front open wide in good weather so you can take in the whole scene and even interact if you choose. Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly, Accessible Cons: Cramped more

  • In Short
There are plenty of faces line the long, double-sided bar that occupies the center of this narrow room. With pinkish walls sporting mirrors and large folding windows that open on Locust Street in warmer weather, the place is made for cruising both indoors and out. Guys young and old, dressed casually and in suits, sit around the bar and share stories over drinks. Everyone seems to know the bartenders and vice versa.
