Lowes is usually synonymous with a quality movie going experience. However, the 42nd street theater is clearly the black sheep of the family. I have been here about half a dozen times (sometimes it plays films that are hard to find elsewhere, which is one of the few bright spots). I have never had a good customer service experience. The staff is aloof, unhelpful, and occasionally downright confrontational. Another plus is that the seats are large and reasonably confortable, that is, if you can get to them. Last time I was here, the escalators were broken, and we had to hike up four stories to get to our film. The popcorn is stale and even more overpriced than usual. The final nail in the coffin? The AMC Empire directly across the street is, for my money, the best movie theater in the city. Avoid, unless it has something that you must see.
