The wait is worth it! 5/8/2007

I was first turned on to Buca by my sister who went there for a friend's birthday. I can't thank her enough. I have been to the one in Kentlands as well as the one near my university in Exton, PA. I agree that the wait is sometimes long, but the food at Buca is well worth it. Obviously the wait will tell you that much. It is immigrant Italian food, not the commercialized food that many Americans think of when they think Italian. It's no Olive Garden. Every time I've been there we've had a very personable and friendly waiter and the food has surpassed my expectations. The atmosphere is very entertaining. There are thousands upon thousands of photos on the walls and you are invited to walk around and look at them all. Regarding price - it's really not that expensive for Italian food... Plus, it is served "Family Style" which means you can get a small (feeds 2 or more) or a large (feeds 4 or more) and they have recently even added single portions to their menu. For the most part, smalls average around $17 and larges average about $26. Really not bad when you consider it'll feed the whole gang. Last time I went, two of my friends and I got a small macaroni rosa (let me just say - AMAZING), small garlic mashed potatoes, a loaf of house bread (free) and drinks for around $32. Last time I checked $11 entrees would fall more under an average category than an overly expensive one. Side note: I've never had the pizza, but who goes out to a nice, sit-down, Immigrant Italian restaurant to eat pizza? If you want cheap pizza, go to Ledos or Pizza Hut. I'd certainly recommend it (and I can't say it enough) you will not regret going! more

Buca Di Beppo - Even Mario and Luigi are Ashamed 4/18/2006

Buca DI Beppo's have gradually been popping up in more and more places, and I have had the pleasure of eating at this particular one a couple of times. Much like the west coast restaurant Claim Jumpers, BDB's claim to fame is its enormous portions of mediocre food. If you are hungry, it's a great place to go... or maybe not. The wait is usually long, like maybe thirty-forty minutes long. The second time I went, it took them an hour and a half to seat us, which would have been okay if they hadn't told us the wait would be 30 minutes. Here's the kicker, the manager promised us a free plate of breadsticks since we were being so patient which set our mouths a waterin'. Once again, he left out a crucial bit of information... he meant to say you can have one small plate of burnt heels in about 70 minutes. Needless to say, we were the only group to stick around to enjoy this free bounty. By that time, we were so hungry it didn't matter. So, not a place I would recommend unless you need to be reminded you're eating Italian food by staring at hundreds of knickknacks and listening to stereotypical Lady and the Trampish crooning. It pains me to say this, it really does, but I actually prefer (I can't believe I'm writing this) the... olive garden. Yes that's right, the Denny's of Italian restaurants leaves a better taste in my mouth. There can be no greater insult. On the plus side, there are lots of leftovers for the family pet...I should also add some of the tchotchkes are pictures of topless women... which is not enough to lift my rating out of okaysville. Oh, and if you're wondering about the actual food: Pizza Bad, Pasta Mediocre, Everything Else Slightly Better than Average. Too much of a bad thing... more

Expensive Italian food 4/4/2006

I would chose Sharrbo's at least it's not too expensive. I had coordinated my office's Christmas party there. Its not too bad when you have a whole bunch of people over for a meal because the environment has a lot of "interesting" stuff to talk about. There was a party of 25 of us and we got to sit at the "pope's" table and literally there was a pope's head in the center of the table in a clear box...quite a interesting center piece to talk about.... We had ordered about 15 dishes and I really didn't like the pizza too much. We had to wait forever for each dish to come out! I liked the penned cardinale and the good thing was you can actually bring in your own cake...not a lot of restaurants will let you do that. more

Huge portions of not so great food 4/3/2006

Buca Di Beppo has the worst tasting pizza that I have ever had. The crust is bland and flat and the pasta dishes are average. The main selling points for this chain restaurant are the large portions and the atmosphere lively. Otherwise, it is expensive for the food that you get. That's Amore over on Shady Grove Road is a much better Italian style restaurant. more

Buca Di Beppo 3/18/2006

Buca Di Beppo is an expensive Italian-style restaurant, that has friendly waiters, but overall bad-tasting food. Normally, I will go all out for the pasta, but many of their foods just aren't great, or even good. For example, their pizza is only second-rate, and the sauce is pretty runny. Also, the shrimp linguini and salad were awful. Everything is served family style, so prices are very high too. more
