This is a great series. The food is really great and the people are all genuinely nice. Some authors have been better than others, but otherwise a great event.

More than Music 3/19/2006

BAM is about more than music -- it is a performing arts mecca. Film, theater, dance AND music all have homes here (and if you can ever rehearse in their spaces you will feel like you have died and gone to theatrical heaven). This is one spot in Brooklyn that is definitely worth the trip for any Manhattanite -- not only do they bring in great tours of shows, but have a stellar lineup from local artists as well. The subway is not that far away and they also offer bus services from the city before showtimes (check the BAM website for more detailed information). The building itself is beautiful. more

BAM--one of the institutions that defines Brooklyn 9/17/2005

The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is more than an orchestral hall--it's a hydra-headed entity with a hall for music/opera/theater productions, an art house cinema (BAM Rose Cinema), and an associated theater a block away (BAM Harvey). The movies are a good deal--the place is comfortable, usually not too crowded, and quite clean. BAM is well-located just a block from the Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street transit hub. more

  • Overview
Located on the fourth floor (above the opera house), this oft-forgotten studio is a second tier rehearsal/performance space in BAM's main building. The Hillman suggests a dance studio with its mirror-lined walls, ballet bars and sprung blonde wood floors, but with its built-in sound and lighting systems, it's actually capable of housing more. Indeed, the education/humanities department has used the space to accommodate up to 200 for BAMdialogues.

With moderators posing intriguing questions to featured artists, the BAMdialogues provide audiences a peak into creators' minds. Past guests range from choreographer Mark Morris to minimalist master Phillip Glass to film stars (and Shakespearean actors) Liev Schreiber and Campbell Scott. On occasion, the Hillman also serves as an art gallery, hosting new media installations and even a martial arts workshop.
