In love with this place. Brenda took the time to help me chose the product, style and go over care instructions. There was no pressure to buy and caring atmosphere. I came back and got a great hairstyle. Oh, and the hat selection is wonderful! more

Let me start by saying I'm in my 60s. Thin/fine, salt & pepper hair. Because of a skin and other medical conditions I have been losing my hair to the point I can't hide it anymore. The medication I use on my scalp is an ointment and is thick like petroleum jelly. I use it 3 times a week and it never seems to shampoo out. So what little hair I have looks limp and dirty. Embarrassed by this I started staying at home more and more till I found I only went out once a week to the grocery store or a doctors appointment. One day my husband pointed out it had been almost two weeks since I had been anywhere. That's when I decided to take some action. I went to a few wig shops in the Salem, Oregon area. At one place they sat me right at the front door and while they were switching off eating lunch, had me start trying on wigs. I felt exposed to the world. So to hide being uncomfortable ended up making a big fun party out of it, instead of getting serious about a purchase. Back to the drawing board and another few months to get the nerve to take another stab at it. After several frustrating weeks I started asking different nurses I saw if they knew any good wig shops. I started hearing, Brenda Kay in Portland. I did my research online, called and made an appointment in December of 2013. I had also lined up some other wig shops in Portland to go see, if Brenda Kay's didn't work out. My wonderful husband went with me and upon arrival we were greeted by a professional receptionist. Filled out a short form and were seated. I think she even offered us something to drink but I was so nervous I don't remember. After about two minutes Brenda Kay came out and invited us to a private area in the back. She started her consultation and we decided just what I may like. I only had to try on three wigs because she listened to my needs and desires. I ended up purchasing a blended wig. Part human and part synthetic. After a few adjustments and some thinning and trimming I wore the wig out of the shop. I also bought a Luminata cap and some wig care products. It took me awhile getting used to wearing the wig. More hair than I've had in years, at first it felt like a football helmet. haha. Now it feels great and I can get ready to go anywhere in a flash No need for the other wig shops more

Very professional & caring team - Adrienne & Brenda Kay! I visited the shop in May after learning I would be undergoing chemotherapy and would be losing my hair. They helped me to find the perfect wig that looked natural and flattering. Brenda showed me how to tie scarves and gave me a bunch of useful info for me during chemo. I was impressed with the professionalism and felt confident in my purchase! The shop was so cute and inviting. I highly recommend Brenda Kay Hair Specialties - they gave me the confidence during this difficult time!! :-) more

Amazing talent and staff. In April of this year, I was faced with the side effect of losing my hair due to chemo. I had been told through word of mouth that Brenda is the best in town for wigs. Adrienne in the shop fit me in for a consultation with Brenda right away. Brenda asked me a lot of questions and listened to my needs. Her 40+ years of experience really showed as she consulted and educated me. Brenda informed me of so many things my doctor didnt about hair loss and the best way to treat and handle your hair during the hair loss phase. more

Wonderful Experience 9/4/2012

Brenda Kay is by far the most knowledgeable wig professional I have ever met. She made the experience of purchasing a new hair piece very painless. Her salon setup is discrete and comforting. She has a large selection and knows her stuff. There was not a single question I had that she couldn't answer. more

Brenda is great! 3/1/2012

Hi! I was recently diagnosed and went to Brenda's salon because a friend referred me. It was as good of an experience as I guess someone could hope to have in this situation. Brenda herself was very vivacious and made me feel very at ease. \r \r I saw another review where people said they were fitted out in the open, but Brenda must have changed her layout or something. She took me back into this area that's totally private, well lit, and has a nice 'hair salon' feel to it. We laughed as I tried on different styles and shades, but ended up coming back to the hairstyle and color I had when I walked in. Brenda talked about the pros and cons of the different types of wigs, and we eventually settled on a real hair wig, which has been ordered. \r \r I guess the only thing I would say is that the shop's in kind of a funky strip mall space, but I wasn't expecting Rodeo Drive. Overall I would definitely recommend her to anyone facing this difficult time. I feel that I've made a new friend more

Very kind and attentive service 4/6/2010

My sister-in-law is in her second year of treatement for a stage four cancer and has lost her hair twice due to chemo and radiation therapy. She wanted a wig badly, but didn't know where to start. Since she is being treated at OHSU, I looked for a shop that was near to this location and came across Brenda Kay's. I checked out the reviews, most of which were great, but a couple were very negative - we decided to give it a try and see for ourselves. Pros: Great selection, let us take our time, understanding Cons: None! more

NO STARS-Brenda Kay 4/5/2010

She is ONLY interested in MONEY,period!!!! She is very fake person. She is expensive and claims to sell quality products. However what she sells is not what she claims it is. She doesn't stand behind her products, and actually rips people off..She is a con artist, period more

Knowledgeable, discreet, kind, fun 1/29/2010

I approached buying a wig to cover my chemo-baldness with trepidation. Leslie made me feel glad to be there, and Brenda brought out the perfect wig the first time. Besides being a warm human being, she is a master stylist and a true professional. Don't forget to check out the great, well-priced hat selection while you're there. Pros: Nice people who know their business Cons: None for me more

I am disappinted. 11/29/2009

I bought a very expensive human hair wig from Brenda. I thought she was helpful in ordering the wig. The wig was beautiful, but then she hacked at it. I told her I wanted a pixie cut. I didn't end up with a pixie cut. It is more of a Meg Ryan, "Harry Met Sally" cut. I was not happy with it. She didn't seem a bit concerned and kept repeating how cute I was. Yeah, maybe I would of been cute n 1985 when the haircut she gave my wig was actually in style. =( I would not recommend her to style your human hair wig. She is not willing to take the time to give you what you want or at least explain up front why she isn't able to give it too you. She is always in a hurry when I have worked with her. She is friendly and has heart for cancer patients but she does not communicate well and I question her ability to assist clients in making good decisions about wigs. more

Great Service! 9/23/2009

Amazing. ABSOLUTELY amazing. They have such an amazing selection and wonderful service. The prices are great for what you get, also. I would recommend it to anyone who gets the privilege to shop there. more

Beware---know the pros and cons before you buy 4/30/2009

First the bad news:\r Unless things have changed, you will be expected to sit where passersby can stare in the window at you as she is putting wigs on you. If you have minimal or no hair, it is embarrassing! And people DO stare in. You can request to be fitted in back where passersby cannot stare at you, but it isn't offered to you right up front and it can be a little uncomfortable to insist.\r \r This business is built primarily on one-time sales, to chemo patients. I too have been burned when something went wrong and she wouldn't stand behind the problem. For her, there is a never-ending stream of new customers lining up behind you and repeat customers are not valued.\r \r Also, beware of her "styling" your new wig. She grabs at chunks and whacks them off in random ways. She does NOT carefully section and cut You will have an uneven do and it will show after you have washed your wig the first time!. You won't understand why you can't get it to look right. \r \r Some people have just thrown more

Expertise, personal service, overall great experience. 10/15/2008

I went in a week ago because i had started chemo and was anticipating losing my hair very soon. Even after I had to reschedule twice, they were very welcoming pleasant each time we talked.. I gave them some info on the kind of wig I needed (e.g. blond highlights, short or just above shoulder length, hand-tied, etc.) and when I arrived she had pulled a number of wigs for me to try. Ultimately I spent two hours there trying on many many wigs and hats (the first 30 minutes were hard for me b/c I had never seen myself in a wig before). By the end of my appointment I had found two wigs I felt great about, as well as three hats that I adore. I never felt pressured, and I definitely recommend Brenda Kay's Hair Specialties very highly. I plan to go back for more hats -- and maybe another wig too -- very soon! Pros: Great selection and service. Very flexible when I had to change appointment times. Cons: A little pricey, but the products are top quality. more

I had just started chemo therapy when I went into Brenda Kays shop - I had not lost my hair yet, but was just exploring my options. I made it clear when I got there that I was just looking and that this was the first place I had even explored - just wanted to get ideas, see what was available, prices, etc. Having just been diagnosed and beginning treatment, I was an emotional cripple to put it mildly. I feel like Brenda Kay was unprofessional because before I knew what was happening, she was slapping wigs on my head, and then telling me she had another 'client' waiting. I felt pressured and bullied but in my emotional state was unable to defend myself so I ended up walking out of there with a $225. wig that I HATE and DON'T want and will NEVER wear. She absolutely REFUSES to take it back. I realize it says on the receipt no refunds but as I said, I felt vulnerable and bullied and rushed to buy this. She advertises that most of her clients are "cancer/chemo" patients - then you w more

The best place to take your wigs! 12/31/2006

I have a rare didease called monilethrix. I have been bald my entire life. I am almost 25 years old and have been going to Brenda since I was 14. Since I have gone to Brenda, my wigs always look fantastic. She has a way of listening to me explain the look I want and then making it look beautiful. She is a professional with years of experience, If you go to Brenda you will be so glad you did. I have never left her salon unhappy, always amazed. SHe also did a beautiful job on my wig for my wedding. I never thought it was possible to make ringlets on a wig look so good. Thank you Brenda! Pros: Excellent skill, quality wigs, great results Cons: a little spendy, but comparable! more
