Best burger in town! 10/25/2009

Go here for a good burger - don't go to the Nook (or anywhere else). I got the classic Blucy with lettuce and tomato. The beef was nice and flavorful and actually cooked to medium! The lettuce was butter lettuce, which was a nice touch. And if you get a booth you can draw on the chalkboard wall while you wait for your food, which was a fun added bonus. Overall, the food was fantastic and I'm definitely going back. The only drawbacks are that it is a small place so you'll probably have to wait. Also, the night I was there my waitress was a bit slow and she had to come back and ask me what I ordered again, and when it came out they forgot my lettuce and tomato. But it wasn't that bad and the food more than makes up for it! Pros: Burgers, fun atmosphere, neighborhood location Cons: Small more

Worth the wait! 2/22/2009

We visited the pub this weekend. We got there to find a short wait. Yes, you do have to stand, kinda in the middle of the place to wait, but it is worth it. The burgers (we had the blucy and swiss/mushroom) were excellent, and the fries were very good (we had them with the cajun seasoning). The food was fresh, which in my opinion makes them stand above the rest. Our food came fast, expecially for being packed with patrons. The service was great too. While we waited, the bartender came over and offered a beer while we waited. Happy Hour was going on and tap beer was $2. Highly recommend a trip to the Blue Door Pub! Pros: Fresh, great tasting food!! Easy parking. Cons: Small establishment more

A Gem - However.... 11/14/2008

Without a doubt, the burgers are amazing. Yes, several places in the metro sell 'Lucy's' - but the Blue Door Pub is tops. Staff is doing everything right: greeting customers, friendly, accommodating. Downside: the place is tiny - and I do mean tiny. The wait for one of the few tables or booths can run an hour or more - the little bar has a few seats (and no one gives them up!). People end up standing among the diners waiting for a table - makes a person feel a little uncomfortable (both those eating & waiting). When the weather is warm many people wait outside. However, no one is going to do that in the winter - and every time the door opens the people inside are going to be blasted by the cold air because the entrance opens right into the small dining area. It's unfortunate that these guys didn't find a larger space to open their new restaurant - because they certainly have what it takes (great food & service). I'd suggest going on an 'off time', however, because you definitely need to try one of those burgers. Pros: Burgers and the friendly service Cons: Small square footage more

I'm in LOVE! 10/27/2008

This is an ideal neighborhood hangout. Everything about it is just right. I feel like Goldilocks! I live within blocks of this oasis and the first night I wandered over I surprisingly wasn't in the mood for a burger, so I went for the Cobb salad. For a burger place, they sure serve a mean, fresh salad. The house wine that I paired it with was quite sufficient and cheap. I was very pleased. My second visit was purely devoted to beer and burger. I went with the Blucy and a side of green beans and washed it down with a Bell's Two Hearted. Perfection all around. It is busy and a short wait is expected, but well worth it. This place is hoppin with a great energy to it. I love that the owners help out with everything. It just has all the ingredients for a perfect neighborhood hang out. Bonus: When my brother asked to buy a shirt, they special ordered him one in his size and color of choice. If I had five thumbs, I turn them all up for this place! :) These guys should be proud of themselves. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Fantastic food, good very local tap selection, comfortable atmosphere. 10/10/2008

Sitting on the corner of Selby and Fairview, nestled amongst stores that sell items from the past, this place is a breath of fresh air and a perfect fit all at the same time. Parking during the day was a breeze and even during busy times I can't imagine that you'd have to walk any further than a half block from your car door to the pub's entrance. On the inside, the bar packs quite the jab per square foot. The Blue Door Pub is a busy but cozy, small neighborhood bar that's teeming over with a very casual, come-as-you-are atmosphere. Conversation dominates the air and it can get quite noisy but it's within reason and to be expected in a place where good conversation and food is to be enjoyed. And speaking of food: it is delicious. The hamburger with the molten cheese center--the Jucy Lucy--is a Minneapolis invention that has been perfected in St. Paul. The Breakfast Blucy, a Jucy Lucy that comes with double cheese, thick-cut bacon and an egg on top, is an over-the-top take on the old standard and the beer-battered deep-fried green beans--served with the obligatory side of ranch dressing--are some of the best I've had. After finishing my burger, and I'm not kidding, I felt very tempted to order another, it was that good. And you can't have a tasty burger without a crisp, cold beer: The beer selection is very Twin Cities metro with servings from Summit, Surly and Lift Bridge Brewery, with some other well chosen non-Minnesotan tap choices to round everything out. The prices on both the beer and the food are very reasonable and happy hour specials on the beer are absolutely insane. The only problem that I can see with the Blue Door is how busy it can get, but it is worth the wait, and should be expected with a place done up as well as they've done with this one. Pros: Delicious food, great taps, lots of parking nearby. Cons: Can be very busy. more
