IMPRESSED BY THE FOOD AND GOING BACK FOR THE GREAT SERVICE 9/13/2010

I had gone to the website for the San Antonio deal of the day. My husband and I just moved to San Antonio from Florida 2 weeks ago. We wanted some down home Southern style cooking. This place did not disappoint.\r Fist I would like to say a very special thank you to the manager there named Mark who went above and beyond being helpful -I couldnt get the coupon for the deal of the to print and I was on the way to to church we planned on eating at Black Eye Pea afterwards. My mother called the restaurant ( being the helpful person she is ) and asked the manager if she could print and then fax it to the restaurant -Mark the manager there asked her to email to him and he would personally print it out and then when we got there all we had to do was ask for him. He was polite and attentive as was our waitress Margaret and they treated us like royalty.\r The food was fit for a king and queen we had fried guacamole for an appetizer it was delightful ! My husband ordered the chicken fried chicken and mashed potatoes and black eyed peas and he really enjoyed it. He was born and raised in the South and doesnt normally like black eyed peas anywhere but home.\r I had the steak dinner the steak was seasoned nicely and tasted awesome and the squash casserole was excellent. The sweet tea was very tasty and wasn't really bitter or too sweet. My husband ordered the strawberry lemonade and loved it. We took our desserts to go.We were too full to eat them and I had almost half my meal leftover and took a doggie bag home. I got the bannana pudding and it was deliicious. This place gets a big thumbs up from me and my husband. Thanks for welcoming us to San Antonio with a smile and some awesome food. more

This may be the worst FOOD, FOOD PREPARATION, CUSTOMER SERVICE, MENU SELECTION AND ATOMOSPHERE we've encountered in our life's! My family and I went there recently. We laughed that someone would even consider this a restaurant! It's a lot of frozen crap, heated/microwaved very quickly, add about 2000Mg's of sodium per food item and serve. The food is plated all wrong and the restaurant could easily be considered on the level of fast food! The service is bad because the servers are adolescents with only tips in mind."" Hurry up and eat is their motto"". They are probably the most apathetic slow serververs in the city. Please reconsider eating there and remember I warned you. When you see your bill at the end. Just try to remember if you ate or experienced anything that was worth it. This place is a bad joke and real nightmare! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! \r David Lancaster more

Next best thing to home cookin' 6/9/2008

Growing up, I was blessed that both parents were excellent cooks. So, when a restaurant specializes in dishes like meatloaf and chicken fried steak, I'm often disappointed. The Black Eyed Pea never disappoints! In fact, when my parents visit me, this is where we go to eat most of the time. My dad is an expert on Southern home cooking. His recommendations would be the cornbread, black eyed peas (of course) mashed potatoes, and the chicken fried steak with cream gravy. Although, we all found the cornbread to be too sweet during our visit earlier today. I've gotten the burgers, meatloaf, and chicken fried steak on recent visits and enjoyed them all. Even the salads are pretty good. Their fried okra is PERFECT. Crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside and seasoned just right. You will also want to try their yellow squash casserole. But on my last vist it was served lukewarm. It's always better when its hot. \r The servers are always very nice and attentive. They always seem to know if you need something, like a refill on iced tea before you have to ask. We've gone on busy weekends and on weekday afternoons when it's not quite as hectic, but the service is always pleasant and helpful. If you get tired of fast food and want a good meal, this is the place to go! more

One of the best American fare restaurants in San Antonio 3/10/2008

I am very picky when I go out to eat and a very hard grader on restaurants, so I'm very happy to finally find a restaurant here in San Antonio that is really better than most. I have tried just about all of the higher class & higher rated restaurants and most leave much to be desired. \r \r I have now dined at the Black Eyed Pea about five times and was pleased with the cleanliness of the restaurant, and the management run it very well. The best thing about the restaurant is the bread. You get a choice of hot wheat rolls, cornbread or both. Several times I have noticed the bread is a little under done, but this is a common problem even in the higher class restaurants. I love the broccoli cheese casserole, and of course the black eyed peas are very good as well.\r \r I ordered the Texas size chicken fried steak, and again like most restaurants, it was somewhat full of tough gristle. This seems to be a very common problem and I chalk it down to the local meat supplier. I would really like to see some local restaurant address this issue, and get a higher quality meat. \r \r But overall, the rest of the menu is pretty good. The steak was not great but not too bad either, better than Chilis. Again, I have rated several restaurants like P.F. Changs, which was one of the most horrible experiences in my life and I gave them 1 star because I couldn't give them a zero, and this restaurant is pretty solid. The tea is flavorful, but sometimes a little strong, nothing some water can't fix.\r \r I would give this restaurant an overall score of 4 stars....Try it and let me know what you think by leaving your review. Pros: hot bread, good sides, overall very good food Cons: need some attention to tough chicken fried steak, and serving under done bread more
