There are SO. MANY. places to shop for wedding dresses in New York that it can be a bit overwhelming, even for a skilled shopper such as myself. I searched high and low---literally, from Vera to Watters---and, frustratingly, couldn't find what I was looking for, despite the fact that I thought my wish-list was pretty reasonable:
I wanted something that was going to make jaws drop, but I didn't want it to be overtly sexy. I wanted it to be somewhat modern and fashion-y (as opposed to an uber-traditional bride-y look), but I didn't look back on myself in 5 years as a fashion victim on the big day. I didn't want to spend an obscene amount of money (what can I say, I'm a practical girl), but I didn't want something run-of-the-mill made of cheesy fabrics in China. I wanted to look like ME, just in a wedding dress.
TOTALLY reasonable, no??
Anyway, after nearly giving up, I visited Birnbaum & Bullock and fell in LOVE. These guys make some ahhhmazing dresses, and what's so cool is you work with them directly---no ""sales associate at your service!"" business here. Makes perfect sense, because who knows their dresses better than they do?
Robert listened to what I was looking for, added in his suggestions based on what he thought would work, we had some fun playing dress up and just like that, I found the dress. It's exactly, exactly what I was looking for, and I'm so excited at the thought of wearing it.
Dresses range from the ultra-reasonable (under $2k) to the high-end (I think they max out around $10k), but they're all beautiful---the less expensive dresses didn't FEEL cheap, which is not always the case.
The very next friend of mine to get engaged is getting dragged to B&B by yours truly...
Pros: Gorgeous dresses and fabulous people
Cons: Uh, none
