Bill Spoons B-B-Q The best in Charlotte 6/11/2011

The absolute best B-B-Q in Charlotte & the surrounding area. The friendliest & most competent staff around. The B-B-Q is a flavorful mix of moist, tender pork & spices. The coleslaw compliments the B-B-Q perfectly! The expanded hours (Thurs, Fri, & Saturdays till 8pm) are a definite plus for me-now I can get my Spoons B-B-Q fix for dinner as well as lunch! The expanded menu is a great addition. I just have to mention the Grilled Cheese sandwich-OMG I haven't tasted one like this since my mom passed away. Absolutely delicious! The bread was buttered perfectly & when I bit into it the cheese just oozed. It is now such a hard decision to pick only 1 item from the menu! EVERYTHING I have ever ordered here is delicious! And the famous hushpupppies are to die for! Crunchy on the outside & fluffy on the inside! No one else has B-B-Q or hushpuppies to compete with Spoons! A great dining experience. I will return again & again & again, & again.......... more

I have been punked! 3/28/2011

are you serious? This place is a joke! The food was horrible, the atmosphere is a time warp, and the servers and cashier were down right rude!!!!\r \r I wonder how many people they have paid to write those reviews? ARGH? And the yellow stuff that they call coleslaw resembled deviled egg filling? \r \r Maybe it's just me, but this was not for me and my guest. We got a good laugh off of the whole experience.\r \r I have been PUNKED!!!! (obviously) I was looking for Ashton Kutcher to jump out at any time. A serious joke! more

Very Good Eastern NC Style BBQ 3/8/2011

My family roots are in the eastern part of NC, around the Rocky Mount - Wilson area. I am used to good eastern style NC BBQ. I have lived in Charlotte for the last 20 years and I have finally say I have found a place that has excellent BBQ. I highly recommend this resturant to anyone looking for Eastern NC style BBQ, This is the best in this area. more

Just what we were looking for 1/6/2011

Did a search online as we were driving home to Virginia from Charleston, SC. Found this place with good reviews. So we stopped in. I loved everything. The coleslaw was a bit unusual but I loved the taste. The BBQ portions were quite large. The sauce was perfect. The waitress was friendly without being overly friendly. She was also expert at answering my questions regarding the food--something you rarely see these days in ANY restaurant. We bought some of the bottled sauce to bring home at the very reasonable price of $4.00. And the bathrooms were exceptionally clean and well stocked. more

Bill Spoon's BBQ-review 6/21/2010

Well with as much as I've heard about this place, I thought it would be off the chain....\r \r Not so much!\r \r Very disappointed. BBQ was shredded (typical East Carolina style). I'm much more of a chopped & diced fan. BBQ lacked the smoke flavor that I love (almost seemed baked). I'm also a fan of the 'bark' which was absent (the chared outside of the BBQ being smoked).\r \r Sauce was vinegar base (which I like), but was mostly vinegar. A lot of bite. Did not like the overall sauce.\r \r Portions were SMALL. Prices were HIGH. BBQ should be something that when cooked in larger portions, should be cheaper to produce. That leads me to the next thing......selection.\r \r Their claim to fame is that they cook the whole hog. If that's the case, why not offer something other than just pulled pork (only meat on the menu).\r \r Had a friend that few in from Kansas City & thought we'd show him some good ol Carolina BBQ. Had to apologize to him later for the poor choice. Wanted to give a head's up to the others out there trying to locate some good BBQ.\r \r Best I've had in the area is......521 Bar B Que (near Sun City). Pros: Quick seating & service Cons: BBQ, pricing, portions, selections more

Absolutely the best Eastern NC style barbecue found in Western NC 6/29/2008

Bill Spoon's serves the only barbecue I've ever had that's truly addicting. I've shared it with friends and family on the west coast and now I have to ship it regularly. This is Charlotte's ""real deal"" Eastern NC style with no sugar or tomato sauce, just the smoked cue seasoned with vinegar, red pepper and the passion for excellence that permeates every lean morsel. Top if off with crispy hush puppies, Charlotte's best sweet tea, and Spoon's banana pudding, and you'll be in hog heaven. Come hungry but don't come late; Spoon's does such a good business during the day it's not open for dinner. more

Still the best 2/19/2008

I am sad to see that Mister Spoon died, but his family is keeping the great food coming. Still the best BBQ (Eastern that is) in Charlotte. more

BEST BBQ EVER!!!!! 8/22/2007

I am not quite sure where the other person giving this review was eating at but it sure wasnt Bill Spoons. This BBQ is by far the best! My husband and i just recently moved from Texas and my uncle owns a BBQ place in Memphis so I have had plenty of BBQ in my day and this is the best BBQ I have ever had. Sorry uncle. The service is very friendly they make you feel right at home and the prices can't be beat. I bring family here every time they visit and now they are requesting I bring Bill Spoons BBQ when i visit back in Texas. Pros: BBQ, Sevice, Price more

Very disappointing 11/7/2006

I can't understand how Bill Spoon's is so highly rated. I've eaten barbecue in 16 states and I'm a certfied Kansas City Barbecue Judge. I love Carolina style pulled pork. My meal here was a small pile of pale, flavorless, shredded, unwhelming pork that desperately needed some spice and smoke. The sauce is typical vinegar based, but is also one-dimensional. There are far better places to get pulled pork than here. \r \r In addition, the service was poor - we were given another table's meal at first, and it wasn't that busy! \r \r The only redeeming thing is that the brunswick stew was pretty decent. Other than that, I can't reccomend Bill Spoon's for good barbecue, since it tastes like oven-baked pork, not smokey, spicy barbecue! more

BBQ 10/25/2006

I have been eating here for many a year. Bill's is the best chopped BBQ around. Great people, service, price, and of course food. If you have't been-go soon. Only open 10am-3pm. Talk about bankers hours.\r Fred Thorp more

Good food, good fun! Try this place out. 8/31/2006

Just moved from California to South Carolina. Love BBQ and was anxious to try some of the local flavor. Bill Spoon's was my first taste of the Eastern NC style. The chopped pork was moist, tender and delicious;especially with some of the vinegar based BBQ sauce on top. The slaw and brunswick stew were both very tasty, too. Super fast, super friendly service! The lunch special includes chopped pork, slaw, a side of potatoes, baked beans or brunswick stew, a small basket of hush puppies, and a bottomless cup of sweet tea all for eight bucks! But, when you get to the register, make sure you have cash, a check or even your promise to pay Mr. Spoon. No plastic! more

TASTY, DELISH!! 7/7/2006

This place is DELICIOUS. Just perfect Eastern NC barbecue! And you can buy the sauce!!!\r \r Just wonderful for me. I bought three bottles of sauce just to take with me back to Miami so I can cook my own pork butt and drench it in this sauce (I am from Eastern NC). \r \r There is just nothing like it. I just wish they had the tasty brunswick stew and flat cornbread like Rogers BBQ of Charlotte did in days past.\r \r \r Pros: Down home personal service, delicious bbq sandwiches! more

I don't even like ""Eastern style"" 11/7/2005

...but I love this barbecue! This is the only eastern NC style barbecue I will eat and I will go out of my way for it! The cole slaw is fantastic and it is good enough to eat by itself rather than as a condiment. Try the banana pudding - they encourage you to every chance they get, but listen to them because they know what they're talking about! This is one of the best values of a lunch you will find in Charlotte. Where else do you get greeted by the owner? He makes you feel like family when you're here! Just make sure to check the business hours before you go, because they aren't standard for most restaurants. Pros: Atmosphere, Price, Great flavor more

Great Bananna Pudding too... 7/27/2005

The service was outstanding, the bbq w/vinegar bbq sauce superb, backed beans, and stew were great. I'll be back, Bill was very welcoming as well - keep it to round numbers! more

Bill Spoon's Barbecue is overrated 6/14/2004

The whole pig bbq is over rated. I was very excited to try the food, however, the whole-pig roast/jerk was VERY VERY DRY. The meat was overcooked, with NO sign of moisture. The seasoning was overkill. For people who are serious about their bbq this place isnt what its cracked out to be. The backed bean were great, the slaw was average, and the hush puppies were decent. As for the service, it was great, a well needed distraction from the lack of taste. more

Sweet Tea 4/14/2004

If people want to try BBQ, this is the kind of place. BBQ, Slaw, HushPuppies & Sweet Tea. Breakfast of Champions. Typical Eastern BBQ. The restaurant is spotless and full of charm with Mr. Spoon at the register to take in the money. Pros: supporting local rest, reasonable prices, Great Food more

Best BBQ 11/4/2003

This place is really a treasure. It's great food, service and quality is tops! Don't let the decor fool you as this place serves up some of the best BBQ and home made vinager based BBQ sause I've ever had. Only open until 3:00PM so get there early. It's usually packed at lunchtime, but the serice is so fast you can be in and out, and satisified in 20 minutes. ENJOY! more
