John Barret does the best blonde....hands down! Pros: blonde Cons: price

I feel bad for the staff who work at this beautiful salon. They have been taken hostage by a front desk staff that runs the salon like gypsies or a cheap used car dealership. I ...

Editorial review from Citysearch 9/6/2013

My favorite colorist of all time, Carlina Ortega left The John Barrett salon so I called the salon and they promised me that someone else could do what Carlina does to my hair, but they couldn't come close. I did a search and found Carlina. Now my hair is happy :) more

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/1/2013

I went to Alison Gandolfo because I read a couple good reviews about her. I was so let down because she gave me such bland color and she kept asking a guy color person what to do. I left looking like I came in. When I went back to another person who was better she kept following me around and asking me questions. It was so creepy. She has such a fake angry smile. I can't go back to this place. She is too creepy. I'm positive she wrote her good reviews herself looking back at them now. They are so fake and they keep popping up saying almost the same thing each time. Alison Gandolfo is a fraud! more

Just Blah color and way too dark!!!! Not inexpensive either! 2/14/2012

I have been going for my color for about 8 months and when I said that it is way too dark i was told that I should find someone else! The guy who did my color was just so uninterested and seemd so bored when I would get there and acted like I did him a favor to color my hair. The color makes me look very old, there are other salons that know how to put some bling in your hair and take 10 years off. My hair was made dark brown with highlights you could not even see! NO ONE that I know liked my hair dark. He told me that my skin was too yellow for lighter hair, that is so not true, I look much younger with lighter hair with golden highlights, he knew NOTHING> more

Bait & Switch then Nickle and Dime You Salon 2/11/2011

I feel bad for the staff who work at this beautiful salon. They have been taken hostage by a front desk staff that runs the salon like gypsies or a cheap used car dealership. I tried this salon and was told it would be $125 for a hair cut from a specific stylist I requested. After my hair cut the front desk said it was suddenly $150. The hair stylist sold me some hair product but 3 minutes later when I reached the front desk it was more expensive. The front desk rep was so aggressive and unfriendly that the whole experience was bizarre. A very unpleasant and shady experience. This place has the potential to be first rate but has just has no class. more

Terrible Experience with Ross! 5/3/2009

I was the last appointment of the night and was on time. Ross insisted on giving me lowlights, which was not what I wanted at all. When I asked him to instead just brighten my highlights up he became very snippy and acted insulted that I did not want to follow his suggestion. He then continued to do my hair in near silence, responding with one word answers when I asked him questions about how he liked New York, how long he's been here, etc... (trying to be friendly). At the end he charged me $40 more than I was quoted telling me that it was because it took him so long to do my hair. My hair is very thin so that reasoning made absolutely no sense. After I received a wash he came over while I was sitting down to get a blowdry and told me that I was making him miss American Idol! He left before my hair was even dry so he had no idea what it even looked like!!!! He was incredibly rude and overpriced. To top it off, the color was so bland that I had to go get it fixed. When I went to Carlina immediately she told me that I had no dimension and she fixed it right up. She was so sweet! DO NOT GO TO ROSS! Pros: Carlina Cons: Ross, price more

Outrageous prices, pretentious, snobby staff 6/17/2008

I have had my hair cut by John Barrett a number of times and was satisfied. I've also had my color done there, and as a brunette, it has always come out too dark. The problem is that every time I've gone there for the past year, the front desk manager (a Caucasian woman in her late thirties with very long, brunette hair) has tried to rip me off and overcharge me. Each time, I had to argue with her and get the owner to correct her attempts to add several hundred dollars to the bill. I will never go back to the John Barrett Salon because I refuse to put up with this unethical behavior. Cons: Snobby, pretentious staff who rip you off, outrageous prices more

Best Blonde Ever 5/30/2008

John Barret does the best blonde....hands down! Pros: blonde Cons: price more

Go to Fekkai or Tricomi 1/8/2008

well....i've been to most of the top salons in nyc, so i thought i'd give this a try. I had a fantastic color job...really right up. However, my haircut was abysmal. Really much shorter than I wanted and uneven too. When I arrived back home, I was jealous of my Shih-tzus recent coiff. Back to the ""real"" salons for me. Pros: Nice views of the park. good color department Cons: dreadful haircut. really awful. more

Huge Ripoff 12/19/2007

I had a horrible experience at John Barrett. i decided to splurge and get my hair cut by John Barrett himself and it costs me $450. Definitely not worth the price. he literally cut my hair in 6 minutes (i timed it) and i now look like a monkey. the staff is so pretentious too -- it's sickening. DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY. Pros: views of the park Cons: overpriced, John Barrett didn't spend any time on my hair. more

not good 11/25/2007

John did not give me a good haircut and I will not go back. It's definately not worth the money, and I would not recommend going here unless you want to waste your time and money. Pros: nice views Cons: very chaotic and not a very good haircut more

Thank you Carlina! Best Highlights Ever! 10/29/2007

She turned a horrible job done by someone at another high end salon into the best blond highlights I've ever had! She listened to what I wanted and used that to reccommend the shade of blonde that would work best with my skin and eye color. It looks so rich and vibrant, but at the same time soooo natural. I love it! I've never been more happy after getting my hair done. She's such a sweet heart, so down to earth, and get this, she actually works on Sundays too! My sister and my boss are switching to her. She's the best! Pros: Carlina! Cons: I didn't find her earlier more

John Barret ? oh, please... it was too good to last 8/17/2007

I was a client for more than 3 years. Sadly John went into QUANTITIES INSTEAD OF MAINTAINING past QUALITIES. I will not come back and I will not recommend this place to my friends NOT ANY MORE Pros: clean Cons: rude service, bad haircut, color average, so why baser? more

worth every single penny 5/30/2007

I had my hair cut and colored here for the first and only did it because I had a gift certificate for 200. So all and all it cost me only a little more than it would at my normal boring bumble and bumble experience. though i luv you bumble. thanks jimmy Pros: beautiful atmosphere, excellent customer care, perfect quality Cons: exepensive- but worth it more

If you like your hair, don't come here. A womans hair is part of her personality, that's who you are and how you present yourself. I love my hair and take good care of it. Thus, I'm very picky when it comes to cutting or getting highlights. I had never heard about this salon before (I lived in Paris all my live and moved to New York recently), but I did hear good things about John Barrett himself, thus, I decided to try it out (besides, for $200 a haircut I didn't think they could mess it up). I'll put it this way, supercuts for $20 would have a done a much better job at it. Just don't do it, save your money, trust me. My loooong hair is now shoulder length, one single layer, flat, dull, boring. They might be good with costumers they have known to please after several visits, but if it's your first time, do your hair a favor...don't go. Just don't do it. Pros: Beautiful view of central park, and excellent service. Cons: No idea on how to cut hair...horrible...terrifying. more

Amazing Stylists 3/8/2007

I get my weekly blowout here. Mahogany is an amazing stylist, very sweet, she knows exactly what I want and does it perfectly every time. I don't know who these people are who are talking about bad service, I've never seen anyone walk out of this place less than satisfied. It may be expensive but you have any interest in the health of your hair and you know what you want, you won't mind paying these prices. Pros: Mahogany, Amazing blowouts, Healthy hair products, Great for African American Hair Cons: Hard to get a last minute appointment near big holidays or events more

Nice, but pricey... 12/27/2005

My sister and I decided to have ourselves pampered with a cut and highlight while visiting NYC. The salon is beautiful with nice views of Central Park, the colorist knew exactly what they were doing and the blow out was the best we've ever had... and you pay for every penny of it... If you're ok with spending $375+ on a cut and highlight- GO FOR IT!! more

Terrible Color Experience 11/2/2005

I had a terrible color experience there. I would definately never go back there. I had been there before for haircuts, which were fine so I decided to get my hair highlighted there. The woman who colored my hair did a horrific job. I spent alot of money on it and it was just a horrific experience. The first color wasn't at all what I wanted (that took a couple of hours) then she tried to change it (it took a couple of extra hours and it was terrible). I had to come in for a color correction the next day and it still isnt what I wanted. I really think this place is overhyped especially with hair color and they don't satisfy customers. I have since had to get my hair recolored back to my natural color and everyone said it was a terrible job....they ruined my hair. Pros: Location, Pretty Cons: Obnoxious, Bad Colorists more

Amazing 7/23/2005

I just recently went to John Barrett to get hair extensions. From the consultation to the final blow drying of my new hair it was great. Richie is the extensions specialist of the salon and I am so glad I went to him. He is very knowledgeable on the extensions as well as my own hair. It also helps that he is a great listener since I talked his ear off for a good 5 hours which is how long the whole process took. But it was well worth it. I'm definitely addicted. If you are even considering extensions make an appointment for a consultation with him. You won't regret it. Pros: Richie, Beautiful salon, Bergdorf goodman more

And he is the owner.... 6/19/2005

I have been to the salon two times and I am never going back. I scheduled my appt and requested the John Barrett. I arrived and I had my hair washed and then I had to sit waiting in his chair for 15 minutes till he showed up. Haircut went great, until I went home and discovered he cut my hair uneven. I was pissed, due to the fact of spending several hundred dollars to get my haircut. I knew he had broken his arm and his arm just healed. I blamed the bad haircut on his arm. Several months later I gave John a second try. Sure, enough I got home again and I noticed a piece of hair that was uneven. That was the last straw and I have never gone back. You would think he would pay better attention to detail. Pros: Nice salon Cons: Bad owner more
