Editorial review from Citysearch 4/12/2013

A year ago, Ben replaced the engine in my 1999 camry with a low mileage used one. It's been very good, way better than the other option which was to replace the car. I looked at the negative comments. I think that's a result of that fact that Ben's shop takes care of mostly older cars. Older cars can be tough to get 100% fixed 100% of the time, because they tend to have lots of problems (kind of like old people... heh). And face it, some people are hard to please. My impression and experience is that he is honest and does good work. I've done most of my own car work for years (my dear dad taught me such useful stuff), including rebuilding a VW from the engine up. I would have replaced the Camry's engine myself if it weren't such a heavy and involved job. So I know at least a little bit about what I'm looking at when I go to a mechanic. And I recommend Ben highly, especially if you are staring down the choice of replacing an engine or replacing an otherwise good car. My camry, after $2800 for engine replacement, is way better than any reasonable used car I might have bought, and that option was looking close to $10k for anything half decent.True, his waiting room is modest. If you require slick digs, then Ben's may not be for you. If you want honest good work on your japanese car, he's a good choice. Best of luck to you. more

Ben will work with you! 3/31/2011

Last week, my commuter car died at work. I typically do most of the work on my car but I thought it was a bad fuel pump which is over my hear. I had the car towed over to Ben's while I was at work. He called me a couple hours later and explained it was my mass air flow sensory and some bad fuel injectors. I explained that I didn't want to get too invested in my 1989 Maxima. He found a used sensor and only changed three of the six injectors because he understood my situation. I took the car home that night and it hadn't run that well in ages. A couple days later my car was smoking a bit. I brought it back to Ben at lunch. I was thinking this is bad news. He said he would take a look at it. He called to say another injector was bad, he only charged me for the part. It wasn't ideal but I asked him to only do what it needed to run. The guy knows his cars and really worked to keep the cost reasonable. It would have been easier and more profitable for him if he insisted on changing all 6 injectors. I would definitely recommend him to others. more

Awful business! 3/27/2011

At first i thought this place was trustworthy and the mechanics seemed honest; after they had done the work on my 1983 Datsun, they called me telling me it was done.\r \r Drove it for a test run to check if its running the way it should be, and it failed us; right then and their. OK, at this point i was not fully impressed but not fully disappointed either.\r \r Went back to the shop, and he ended up charging me $330, for adjusting my carb and containing vacuum leaks. which is an awful deal, keeping in mind its still not functioning right.\r \r The car is still running pretty poorly, and i regret taking it here. so beware, be very aware!! more

A Trustworthy, Hard Working Mechanic 12/29/2009

I went to Ben's Japanese Auto Clinic to have a new engine put into my beloved 87 Honda and was happy to know Ben offered a engine warranty -- not thinking I would need to use it. Well there was an oil leak that caused heavy smoke on start up so I took the car in TWICE over the course of a month to have the engine readjusted. I was impressed that Ben honored his warranty each time and worked hard to diagnose and fix the problem without a cent charged for labor. Though I was charged for some parts, I am happy with the service and dedication Ben showed me and I would recommend his shop to others. more

Never get your car fixed here -because they won't 7/21/2009

We had this place recommended. Went here 3 times. Last 2 repairs are questionable. We had a broken lifter in our car, but all of the sudden, every other part needed replacing. They offered to rebuild the engine for $2000, but then we agreed that $1450 to get it running. Engine still ticked for a few days afterward, but then cleared up. Next time, we needed the starter fixed. A couple other things needed replacing that we new about so gave the go-ahead. But the car still stalls, and now a slight thumping sound underneath the car. Told them they did not fix the car - would they fix it for free? Said depends on what need fixing. Will never go here again. Cons: replace parts that do not need replacing more

Avoid 12/11/2007

We used this shop because they were close and had an opening but I wouldn't ever go back. We authorized a certain sum of money for one repair and then they made completely different repairs. When we went ti pick up the car we were suddenly charged over $200 more than we authorized. I prefer a mechanic who is more forthright about expenses so I won't go back here. more

I've been taking my vehicles to Bens for the last couple years now and I've only had good experiences. Pros: friendly, high quality. more

what a pro! 6/20/2005

i had a 105k-mi service done on my 98' accord at Ben's a month ago, and i'm really satisfied. i dropped my car at scheduled time, and got my it back on time. the parts they used are all genuines and even inexpensive! the bill and the explantions are understandable, most of ""scary"" shops out there use cheap after market parts, and the charges are just too much. they don't even know waht they're doing. go to Ben's and get your works done that you need for reasonable price. Pros: right time, genuine parts, pros' skill more
