Worst Food We've had in Years 5/20/2009

The service was very good, well, except the pushy hostess who would not let us sit where we wanted to. But let me get to the real problem: The Food. Worst food we've had in years. Really. The taco salad had old dry chicken with a greasy shell. It was awful. The other dish was a sausage pasta dish with marinara sauce which looked and tasted like someone opened a can of dog food and mixed it with pasta. The marinara sauce was dark and burnt looking. \r \r STAY AWAY! Pros: View of Pier and Ocean Cons: Food more

The Beach Bar is Chill, Great Happy Hour 9/29/2008

I've been to the 'beach bar' part of the restaurant a few times now. It has a great Happy Hour 5-9p.m. 7 days/week. There are food specials, and the nachos are really good. There aren't many beers on tap, and they don't make mojitos, but somehow this place makes up for it and I still like going here. Pros: Happy Hour, Relaxed Atmosphere Cons: No Mojitos, Limited Beers on Tap more

Go for the view, then go somewhere else. 12/10/2007

It's a shame that Beaches, which occupies a prime piece of real estate in happy Manhattan Beach, is such a disaster. PIty the poor tourists who've spent the day soaking up the sun in this cute little town, only to be left with a bad taste in their mouth--literally. I'll try to keep it short, but the list of complaints is long. To begin, the place has a strange, multilevel design--necessary because of the steep hill--but the result is a ton of wasted space in the cavernous reception area. You might not notice, though, since the smell of stale beer from the downstairs bar could grab your attention first. The upstairs dining room tries to take advantage of the view, but the room is tired, worn, and exceptionally dark at night (probably to keep your mind on the view and off the food). The whole place could use a good scrubbing, but this is the kind of establishment where the smell of ammonia would be left to linger despite complaints. And then there's the food. Ahhh, the food. I don't know what's going on in that kitchen, but the quality is downright embarrassing, and the recipes have bland, odd characteristics that one would only hope to find in the senior center where you've stashed your witch of a mother-in-law. Whatever you do, don't try the Seafood Caesar, I beg of you. It may sound like a good idea (""Hmm, I like seafood! I like Caesar!"") but should be a lesson in making a simple dish unrecognizable--the taste, the presentation, the very idea of the thing would be laughable if you weren't expected to pay for it. While Manhattan Beach isn't known for its food, there are plenty of places along that hill that are at least true to themselves. Once you've eaten at Beaches you'll long for the simple pleasures of a decent burger, a visit to the Copper Kettle, or heck, a sandwich from Subway. They'll be worth the climb. Pros: The view. Cons: Everything but the view, and even that's better from outside. more

Great View, Poor Food 9/16/2007

My wife and I went to Beaches for a Saturday lunch. Though we have eaten at many of the local restaurants, this was our first visit to Beaches. The view of the Pacific, the pier, and the beach activities is certainly outstanding. Unfortunately little else comes close to matching the quality of the view. We were taken to the second floor dining area and seated at a good window table. The interior is tired and somewhat worn. Perhaps at night you wouldn't notice but the daylight showed all. We decided on the New York Steak sandwich and an Omelet. The steak sandwich was ok but nothing to write home about. But the omelet and hash browns were the worst we have ever tried to eat. My wife who is a good cook still hasn't figured out how and with what they produced this ""omelet."" We figured they used the hash browns as a grease sponge. Added to this were the flies attacking the food including the one that floated to the top of my wife's ice tea after she stirred in some sugar. Diners near us were having the same problems with the flies and they had to cover the food with their napkins. Throughout the restaurant we saw few customers finishing their meals and we overheard several comments commenting on the poor quality of the food. \r \r The service was fair and I must say that the downstairs bar looked like it might be a place to go for a drink and the view at night. But we will never return for the food. Their are too many places nearby that do it much better. It is our hope for the ownership of Beaches that their cook simply hadn't shown up that day and what we and others were served isn't their standard fare. Pros: The View Cons: The Food more

At your own risk 7/25/2007

We had one evening to spend in Manhattan Beach on a trip from Australia to Europe. We chose to have dinner at Beaches. Fatal mistake: we should have read the reviews. We had Margaritas in the drink section. The waiter didn?t bother to change the stained paper table cloth nor to take our drinks to our table in the dining section. Great view but that is all. After quite a while the the waitress appeared. We ordered a dozen oysters, which proved to be a dangerous move. So close to the ocean you would expect the oysters to be fresh. Well, the waitress brought half a dozen only, either because of a short memory span - she had just started she told us - or maybe because that would make it two half dozens, which of course would be more expensive. Anyway, that didn?t make any difference because we sent the oysters back, due to their advanced state of decomposition. Didn?t the cook smell them? Well, it is true that I did swallow one, never having been served decayed oysters before. The manager didn?t even bother to come and apologize. The waitress said there was no problem and they wouldn?t charge us! Then we asked about the free meal for our six-year old daughter since Beaches advertise free meals for children who take their parents out for dinner between 5PM and 7 PM. The waitress said she would have to check the time the order was taken and ask the manager. The only time we saw her again is when I called her for a glass of wine in the hope that the Chardonnay would take care of that oyster?s curse. She even forgot that order until I reminded her. The entrees (blackened prawns and blackened mahi-mahi) was mediocre. To be fair, Beaches didn?t charge us for the decayed oysters nor for the child?s dinner. We are flying to Europe tomorrow. I am sure you can guess what my prayers are regarding the oyster I swallowed? more

Great Friday lunch 7/7/2007

7/6/07: Had Friday lunch with a friend. Yes, service a bit slow, but we enjoyed the gorgeous view while waiting and deciding on menu. The lightly Grilled tuna sandwich served with wasabi sauce and coleslaw was a fair price, and delicious... as good or better than any I've ever had. The taste still lingers...\r \r If dining in the afternoon, just plan to relax and enjoy. The wine list is pretty extensive with many ""by the glass"" choices at reasonable prices. \r \r The only con I found is with parking and walking down the hill. Pros: Food Cons: parking ((lack thereof) Fairly steep hill to walk down more

Nice view, hate the hill especially in heels 4/11/2007

I've been here as a night club-pretty fun but a bit packed actually really packed to where you can't breathe. As for dinner I wasn't satisfied. Service was a bit slow especially since it didn't seem too busy and food very mediocre. I got the pasta primavera and it was really watery. Parking meters done at 8pm. more

Great Service! 2/24/2007

Nice restaurant........There was a very helpful hostess who was very friendly, and the down stairs staff was also wonderful...especially the guy running the food.....food was great as well...... Will definately come back! Pros: Hot staff more

Best View in the Southbay Finally has Great Food 2/20/2007

In the past this place was only good for the view and drinks. That has changed. I got the feeling that the place has new ownership. Instead of the mindless hostess we were seated by a mature East coast guy who I'd imagine was the owner. \r \r My wife and I had a fantastic meal. For an appetizer I had Ahi rolls. They were huge filled with beautiful sushi grade Ahi! The dressing was a delicious wasabi, lemon, and mayo. My wife had steamed clams. They were delicious with a rich buttery, stock. I'd recommend Albacore salad. It was perfectly cooked sushi grade albacore.\r \r Since we ate there we have been talking about going back soon.\r \r Our waiter was a bit of a dud. He needed some dental work. But we ate at 4 pm and I'd imagine that he was a lunch waiter at the end of his shift. \r \r There isn't a bad seat in the restaurant as far as the view is concerned. I'd time my meal with watching the sunset in mind. Pros: Great View!! Great Food for a change Cons: Parking is a tough more

Beaches for the view- not for the food 10/28/2006

Great view but horrible service. The seafood pasta is not bad. Although the restaurant is never really crowded, it takes awhile to get seated since the hostess is never really at the front of the restaurant. Once seated, the service takes awhile. The view however is beautiful. Best for appetizers and drinks but not for a sit-down meal. Pros: Beautiful view of the beach Cons: Slow service, food is okay more

Like it after hours 10/19/2006

I've never eaten dinner here, but I'd recommend it as a fun dance club. The drinks are cheap, and it's the only real dance club I know of in Manhattan Beach. The DJ spins great music, and the bartenders are friendly. Pros: cheap drinks, dance floor, great views Cons: parking more

Wasted space 5/12/2006

The place is beautiful, the view is unmatched...that is where it ends. We waited for the hostess. She escorted us to a nearly empty dining room. Service was slow and forgetful. The portions are very large and the food was somewhat good, but waiting until your food is cold to get condiments in a very empty dining room always leaves me cold. The manager on duty was a large man with a very large attitude that was very guest negative. The guy must hate people. There are much better ways to spend your money on dining. Pros: View, style, location Cons: Service, food, guest service more
