I chose Compass bank because most of the banks give free checking if you have direct deposit. When I signed up I was told that deposits even cash ones are not credited until midnight that night. At the same time debits are taken out, but credits are posted first, as long as you had it in before 4 p.m. I found that to be odd, but it was not an issue. I would always keep some cash out of the deposit. Today I checked my balance and noticed that one of my checks hadn't cleared yet, so I decided to deposit all of my money and not keep any out. My thinking was that I would use the money from the check that hadn't cleared knowing that my deposit would post first even if the check was going to clear tonight. So, I went to the bank made my deposit and stopped at a store made a purchase with my debit card and came home. Then something came up and I needed to make an ATM withdrawal. I went on the website to balance everything and to my surprise I saw that my account was in the negative. I saw that the check had posted within that 2 hour time frame. Since I had stopped at the store on my way home and used my debit card and they posted the check, this put my account in the negative. When I called Compass(which by the way if you call more than 5 times a month, you get charged a fee per call), I was told that even though deposits do not post until midnight, checks can clear all throughout the day. I told them that it did not state that in the paperwork I was given, and I was told that is the way it is. I said I thought it was funny that they can clear checks all throughout the day, but they could not credit a cash deposit until midnight. Again I was told that this is the way it is. So if you do not want immediate access to your money, then this is the bank for you, I will be closing my account as soon as my 90 days is up. If I close the account before then, I will be charged $25. I would highly advise you to find another bank if you are looking at this one.
