Winner of Worst Restaurant in RI 11/16/2011

This place should be renamed The Puking Crab! I'd rather eat a can of Nine Lives tuna than eat here again. Way overpriced for picnic tables and poorly prepared food. Seems like they treat teir staff as poorly as the food tastes, too. Go get a Fish-a-majig at McDonalds, it'll be better than anything you can eat here! more

Locals don;' waist our time here 4/1/2009

Overprices. Poor service. I asked the young clearly inexperienced waitress about the wine and she had no idea what she was selling! I mean like no clue. the food was less than average. Better seafood can be had at Buskers The IRISH pub across the street! bathroom was dirty. Staff needs to stay on top of the restrooms. Pros: Close to my home, but not like I go again anyway Cons: Everything more

Great Seafood & Cheap Beer 3/14/2009

We live in Boston and frequent the ""crab"" frequently. last summer we headed to Newport and were surprised to see the Barking Crab there as well. This is a cool place---much larger and more modern than the Boston location. They have TONs of beer on tap at extremely reasonable prices as well as all the staples that are on the Boston menu. If you are looking for a casual experience with good beer and food, this is the place. It won't break the bank! Pros: Great inexpensive beer list Cons: Closed in the winter more

A little slice of Boston! 3/4/2009

I was wicked happy when I found out that the famous Barking Crab would be opening in one of my favorite summer locations, Newport R.I.! I wasn't sure if it would live up to the laid-back atmosphere, and great food that I have come to rely on at the Boston location. Thankfully, I felt right at home! The location is perfect and the new restaurant is beautiful. My friend and I settled in at the bar and enjoyed some delicious crab cakes. We washed them down with my favorite summer brew, Sam Adams Summer Ale. The bartender was very attentive and amusing. She was from Boston, so it was very comforting being able to exchange stories with a fellow Bostonian. We were having such a good time chatting with the locals and staff, the time flew by and before we knew it, the night was over. Our long trip back to Boston was calling our names. I was sad to say goodbye, but very much looking forward to returning to Boston, back to our ""Mother Crab""! Pros: Service, Ambience, Beer Selection more

Give them a break! 3/4/2009

So much negativity in these reviews. Give them a break, they are a Boston institution and serve the same great food here on the island. They have an awesome (huge) bar, as well as nice outside patio. We went for dinner and had crabcakes, oysters from the raw bar, as well as a clambake dinner. They have over 30 beers as well, which makes everything even better! Give it a shot, you can't go wrong! Pros: Service, food portions, ambiance Cons: too many selections more

Had Its Moments.... 12/12/2008

We were there in September during the Boat Show. We ate at the bar which was very crowded and I could see why. The bartender, a small blond, was pleasant and attentive without being obnoxious. She made great drinks too. The food almost lived up to the service. The swordfish was excellent, very flavorful. The crab cakes were good, but very small. The fried food was average. The deserts, key lime cheesecake and chocolate cake, were delicious. The jazz band was actually pretty good. We went back last week. The food was less than average and the service was lacking. The bartender we remembered was no longer there so we were told. As an aside, we witness the manager, Chris, in action. A note to Corporate....he's not an asset. Pros: The September Staff Cons: The Current Staff more

Not impressed 10/17/2008

Somehow my husband and I ended up spending almost $50 for 3 stuffies, fish and chips, and a cup of clam chowder. Considering their Boston location has such a great reputation, I expected more from them opening a restaurant in a location with such great restaurants like Newport. Our waiter was rude, he had the personality of a dead fish, he looked like a cartoon character and was more concerned with fixing his hair then waiting on us. At least the bar manager was super nice and ended up waiting on us. I wish we could have left a tip for him instead of our waiter. Pros: Location Cons: Service, Food, Value more

Barking ""Dog"" would be more appropriate 10/12/2008

If you want surley hostesses, poor service, long.....service and bad waiter- go for it. It is very overpriced with so-so food.\r When my son and I arrived, the hostess did not even look up, then seated us at the bar (that was fine, though neither of drinks). She said the service would be faster here. The bartender/waiter eventually brought menus , took our order and an hour later I finally had to ask the other bartender to check on our order (which was just a salad and steamers). The original waiter never checked on us. My salad came ($12 for lettuce with 3 cucumber slices and some very cold chicken on top). I tried to speak with the manager and he just looked at me over the top of his glasses and acted like he could care less.) We were also hurried out as they were very busy (heaven forbid we could sit in the bar (it is a bar) and watch the OU-Texas game \r Don't waste your time or money Pros: convenient to downtown Cons: service, food more
