One day I had aweful sushi at Basho...Put aside taste of sushi, it didn't look like sushi. It was just a piece of raw fish and smashed rice ball...

Best Japanese Food in Columbus 9/1/2010

I think at this point my husband and I have been to all of the Japanese Restaurants in the surrounding area & hands down this is our favorite one. Ba Sho is very unique, they are not a trendy fusion place that I think most Westerners are looking for. You will not find over the top fusion rolls or lots of weird combos. What you will find is classical Japanese home cooking. Perfectly prepared, consistent, and always well done. more

not so sure 1/6/2010

I have been to Ba Sho before with just me and my husband and we really had a good time there. Food was good and so was the service. So when my big brother came to visit me from oversea, I thought it would be great to take him there for a fine dinner:) Cons: tip? or no tip? more

The real thing 10/14/2009

Real Japanese owned and operated. Real Japanese food. No juggling pepper shakers. I?ve eaten here for more than five years. Favorite casual Japanese restaurant in Ohio. Nice sized portions, not too big. I have recommended this restaurant to countless people. No problems with the bill. Billing problems are easy - call them. Check your statement. Sometimes the online numbers are temporarily incorrect. It is inappropriate to damage peoples livelihood without talking with them. Pros: Big or small lunch & Izakaya Dinner Cons: TV noise (sometimes) more

DISHONEST, AND NOT WORTH THE TIME 8/13/2009

I went to BaSho Japanese Restaurant on Tuesday August 10th, 2009 with my girlfriend. I had been to the restaurant in the past and always had a good meal and time. However tonight was the exception. The meal was below average and over priced. Now I am even more upset because I paid with my bank card and check my bank account today and somehow my bill was larger than what I signed the bill for.....yes the waitress added and extra tip for herself on my bill that I did not sign for! This is highly illegal and very dishonest! DO NOT EAT THERE! CROOKS! more

Avoid - they charged more than what my receipt said 7/2/2009

I always pay my tip in cash, and I paid 25%. When I checked my bank account they added 20% to my bill, when I clearly signed for a different amount. Meaning my waitress pocketed a 45% tip. Dishonest and illegal. My husband and I dined there frequently in the past. Never again. Very disappointed. Pros: None Cons: Dishonest business practices more

Well above average 3/9/2008

I do like BaSho's but there are a few things that knock it down from a 5. The first are the lack of any lunch hours (dinner only.) There is also a lack of good Hiyayako, she said they didn't HAVE any? The last thing that can be annoying is the fact that they have a TV which they put on public channels to watch things like Jeopardy etc during the meal (I prefer no TV while I eat thanks.) The "mean hostess" that you see in other posts doesn't apply any longer because the former "Obaa-san" has sold the restaurant to another person; this however did not affect the food quality which is one of the best in the area. If you're looking for #1 service, food choice and can bear a slightly higher price, I'd head to Sushi Bistro Masa (though it's not quite as authentic feeling as BaSho because of the newer decor and a few menu items.) Pros: Food, price Cons: television, selection more

Dissapointment 1/14/2008

I read the reviews on citysearch and had high expectations for Ba-Sho. Sushi was sub-par, service was average. I could name 5-10 other places in c-bus I would go for sushi/Japanese other than Ba-Sho. Pros: Appetizers, Parking Cons: Sushi (sashimi & rolls), Service, Ambience more

Best Japanese food... Outside of Japan 8/17/2007

This is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the state of Ohio. Every major city I go to I make sure i try the japanese food and this is one of the best. Pros: very traditional, nice interior, great food Cons: small more

Great Food, Rude Staff 2/14/2007

The food at Ba Sho is very good and authentic. The sushi has always been fresh, and the gyoza is amazing. I liked it better before 2002 when they still had all of the authentic japanese crafts on the walls and played japanese music. The grumpy old women who complained about us in Japanese was also very entertaining. A few of us speak Japanese, so it was always fun to hear what she was really saying about us (nothing nice). I would recommend Ba Sho to couples without children who love Japanese food, and don't mind a rude waitress. Ba Sho has many authentic and somewhat strange dishes. I recommend experimenting with a dish you would normally turn down...Eel doesn't taste the way you would think;) Pros: Great Food, Easy Parking, Prompt Service Cons: Rude staff unless you are japanese. more

Basho is better with new owner. 12/20/2006

I liked Basho from the first time I ate there in 2002. The previous owner was a hoot. She was rude, obnoxious, loud, and scolded the workers in Japanese. I was always a little scared of her. The new owners are friendly and cordial. Today, I feel the food is as good or even a little better. You will see Japanese eating there all of the time. Be careful, it is easy to eat too much, but don?t worry. Its good for you. Pros: Parking, seating, quantity of food Cons: Green tea is mediocre, make reservations on weekends more

Great Food, Rude Employees 4/23/2006

My husband and I love to go out to eat, but now that we have a small child we have to get food to go. Ba-Sho used to be our second-favorite Japanese restaurant in town. They have fabulous sushi and udon noodle dishes. When my husband stopped in to place a carryout order on a not insanely busy evening, he was told--"I don't think so. Not tonight. And encouraged to leave." I guess they must be doing pretty well if they can treat customers that way. Pros: Great food, good parking Cons: Rude service, crowded seating more

Great little place! 4/20/2006

I'm actually disappointed that Otani and Restaurant Hama received better scores and Bento Go-Go is rated the same. I found the service to be extremely friendly and the food fantastic. The moment you walk in, you know this is going to be different. You're greeted by the chefs when you walk in and acknowledged as you leave. The spicy tuna, it seems most agree, what great and ended up being my favorite dish. The prices were not over priced at all and presentation of the food was great. Seating is very limited, but food definitely worth it. Try it! Pros: Food, Service, Prices Cons: Cramped/Cosy more

GREAT AUTHENTIC FOOD! 12/6/2005

I stumbled on this inconspicuous place last year and I cannot praise it enough. My friends and I eat here all the time! Fantastic food and very fairly priced! It seems extremely authentic there are always several Japanese people eating there which leads me to believe that it's probably is as close to the real thing as you can get. I highly reccomend the Spicy tuna, Unagi, Rainbow, and Tempura rolls and the Nabeyaki Udon is sensational. For dessert try the Mocchi Ice cream. As far as the other reviews go, whats all this talk about the owner/hostess being rude? She remembers us and has never given me reason to complain (and I'm not even remotely Japanese!) I figure the aloofness is a cultural thing. It is not an enormous restaurant and probably not the best place for large groups but other than that you can't go wrong! Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent food, Authentic more

BA Sho is the Best 4/11/2005

I may have only discovered the joys of eating japanese food for a few years but I do know one thing, THIS IS THE BEST I'VE HAD IN COLUMBUS! Don't let these other reviews fool you either, the hostess is a very nice lady, and the service is my favorite kind, polite and non intrusive, but friendly as well. If you're tired of sitting in those stuffy uppity trendy downtown "sushi" bars, come out to the burbs. Sometimes sprawl has more to offer than Wal-Mart. Pros: GOOD FOOD, INEXPENSIVE, GOOD ATMOSHPERE more

great food but... 3/25/2004

The best sushi in town hands down. Service is good except the owner who is quite rude at times. I remember we had a party of 8 having sushi and as soon as we were done eating (while we were talking and enjoying our stay) she came over and said "ok its time to go I need the space." I will keep going for the EXCELLENT food but service has much to be desired. Pros: food more

Great food, mean hostess 6/6/2003

I like this food a lot but they are set in how they work. The hostess is a little rough but once past her the food makes up for the first impression. Great spicy tune rolls, some of the best in town. The place is small and a little crowded. Go there for the food but that is it and if you are looking for take forget it. Pros: great food, service more

unfriendly host 2/18/2003

the restaurant is pretty small. It is not good for large group. You'll either get kicked out from the restaurant for bringing too many people or you have to wait awfully long to get seated. They don't take reservation as well. Pros: good food, good parking Cons: unfriendly host, no non-smoking area more

Best Sushi in Town 1/22/2003

I love Basho. As a person who lived in Japan I can confirm that this is about as close to the real thing as you're going to get here in Columbus. I guess it's the tight seating arrangement and the hackneyed japanese decor that makes me feel like I'm back in Osaka. In any case, the sushi is delicious - especially the unagi, spicy tuna rolls and the baked samon specialty rolls. Although the hostess on a good day can best be described as aloof I can't help be keep coming back for the food and authentic japanese atmosphere. The place is always full of Japanese people - more proof it's good sushi. Next time your there coung how many hondas (japanese) cars you see in the lot. Pros: Good Food, Authentic Experience Cons: Crowded - Long Wait more

Not Consistent 8/17/2002

One day I had aweful sushi at Basho...Put aside taste of sushi, it didn't look like sushi. It was just a piece of raw fish and smashed rice ball... more
