I coordinated a Holiday lunch for 24 employees from Visa... we were treated like royalty. Ambiance, location on Belden Place made us feel like a fantasy escape to Europe. Decor is...

Was very excited about this place until I waited at bar. Waited 20 minutes for an expensive drink and didn't get my change back! Food was a step up. The jamon serrano is like butt...

Yummy Paella 10/27/2008

I came her for the first time the other day for lunch and it was nice. Anywhere in Belden Alley is usually a good choice and this was no exception. It was a wonderfully warm day so we sat outside. The service was very good, they gave us good wine recommendations and most of the food was great. We each tried a different Paella and both were good. Their garlicy shrimps were a good appetizer but the other that came highly recommended by our waiter was very disappointing. The one we didn't like and I wouldn't recommend it was the anchoives, nothing special, a little bland we each had a few but ended up sending them back. Overall I would definitely go back. Pros: paella - outside dining more

Love Tapas Here 10/17/2007

I love Tapas, so B44 is a great place for me! The clams here are fresh too. Service here is very nice as well. The Boquerones is my favorite dish here. Anchovies with pear and cheese are the great combination! more

Disappointing: horrible service. 1/5/2007

I've been to this restaurant several times, and the appetizers have been consistently good. The entrees are hit-and-miss depending on what you order. That said, I had horrible service on my last visit with a group of friends celebrating the holidays, and am a bit put-off about returning again. Pros: outdoor seating, good appetizers Cons: bad service more

God Food, great drinks 10/13/2006

The place is nice and romantic, a litle loud though. It's in the beautiful european Belden PL. The food was good. I loved the wine selection. Great place to take your date. Pros: food drink ambience Cons: parking more

good food and great service 9/30/2006

I went to have dinner on saturday 3 weeks ago with my husband and my parents in law. Our server was a very nice spanish girl. She really took care of us although they were pretty busy. She recomended us a very good spanish wine not expensive at all. We had never had spanish food before so she recomended her favorite dishes. As apetizers we had garlic prawns, peppers stuffed with crab meat and oxtail. Everything delicious. As entree she suggested paella cacadora so it was my choice. It was amazing, i can't wait to go again. The hostess was spanish and very nice as well. All the staff looked cool, the manager was kind of weird though. Pros: service, food. more

There's better places on Belden Lane... 7/16/2006

I have to say this place was disappinting. The waiter was nice but the food was a little... I guess the best description is ""sparse"". Got the cheese plate to split with a friend, it was unfortunately boring without much flavor. We decided to go for desserts and try the ""Pina Colada"" which sounded great. It was pretty much a few slices of pinepple (about as much as you would use to garnish a drink) piled up with a sauce over it. I'm still not sure how that matches the description on the menu. Although the cost of the food seems average for SF it's too expensive for what you get. Pros: prompt service Cons: the food, the price. more

Ambiance good - food bad 2/16/2006

Olive oil-balsamic dip for bread was salty. Squid appetizer tasted ok, but did not look appetizing. Romaine heart salad was served in whole leaves and a bit challenging to eat. Their signature B44 paella was disappointing. The chef tried to make up for flavor by adding salt. It was a mistake. Pros: Ambiance Cons: Food more

Avoid this place 1/29/2006

This place is terrible. The appetizers were just OK, but the paella was truley nasty. Not only was it ill-proportioned but it was served cold and oddly burnt to the pan. We dropped some serious bucks in here the other night only to be treated rudely by snooty waiter. I will never return here again. The only reason this place is still in business is because of their location. Cons: rude, bad food more

Please do not waste your time 1/29/2006

The food was mediocre and while my waiter was great, other members of the staff were awful. Teribly awful. Don't waste your time. Cons: staff, management, staff more

Yuck! 1/3/2006

B44 fell flat on its face New Years Eve. All SF restaurants should be embarrassed for B44. THE FOOD. B44 came close to ruining Paella for me forever. To describe the rice as deep fried salt pellets coated in oil would be kind. I stopped eating rice and went for other ingredients, I bit a mushroom that if it had been scraped off the bottom of an oven it would have tasted better. THE SERVICE, the server took 10 minutes to greet us and then said Youd better order everything at once or else it will take forever at least he was honest. When I informed the manager that the quality was poor, I was nice about it too, he did not make any attempt to apologize or redeem the restaurant. Im sure B44 has its good days, but Im not going to risk trying it again. more

best street for lunch during summer 10/13/2005

i think all the restaurants in belden are awesome. i like b44 for their garlic shrimp, for people watching, and to be in a unique environment. belden lane/b44 has a european flair, and a touch of n.y. style. eating casually and watching people watching other people is fun. Pros: decent food, lively environment, indoor/outdoor seatin Cons: tight seating more

Unforgettable Dining Experience! 12/22/2004

I coordinated a Holiday lunch for 24 employees from Visa... we were treated like royalty. Ambiance, location on Belden Place made us feel like a fantasy escape to Europe. Decor is festive, warm, inviting... upscale but relaxed. Food was SO tasty and unique. Meal started with appetizers served family style(SO GOOD!) accompanied with sparkling wine. Main course entree selections were all to die for but B44 Paella was the BEST!- served piping hot, authentically home made. Excellent Spanish wine menu. Desserts were HONESTLY the best I've ever tasted so save room. Service was 100% first class and attentive. This is not your typical, predictable, good food boring restaurant that will be forgotten the next day. The entire dining experience exceeded expectations. I've received nothing but rave reviews from attendees. Pros: Food, Service, Ambiance more

paella portions a JOKE 8/12/2004

Okay, am I weird or does everyone else join me in expecting massive amounts of food when ordering paella? Man the portion was so light that you could see the pan through the thin layer of top rice. When the waiter brought the lil, teenie weenie personal pan out to me I laughed out loud and asked, ""is this it?!?"" Avoid this place if you're hungry. Go to Zarzuela if you really want paella. This place is designed for the happy hour crowd and people with fufu appetites. Pros: nice setting Cons: paella portions unacc, indifferent service more

barely ok 6/7/2004

My husband and I ate at B44 this last Friday night and were a bit dissappointed. The app's we ordered were very tasty; marinated anchovies with pears and cheese and the salted cod fritters, although the fritters were mostly potato than cod. The most disappointing part of the meal was the paella we ordered. I mirror the sentiments of the previous reviewer who was disappointed in the portion size. I had the B44 paella and I could literally see the bottom of the pan. It was however tasty. My husbands paella was a huge let down. He had ordered the Parellada but the waiter brought the vegetarian paella. It was bland, and mushy. When we pointed out the mistake to the waiter, he shrugged. He did offer to bring the correct dish, but by that point it was not worth it. Will I go back? No. Pros: some tasty dishes Cons: , loud more

The moment I finished my last bite, I thought to myself, "" Hands down the top ten meals of my life."" This place was amazing. It starts with the walk down beldan place, an alley that reminds you of europe. Then the restaurant, with wonderful ambience designed with just the right touch. Then the service--with a smile, (good work Zack), prompt, good knowledge of the food. And lastly, the food- perfect. Definite recommendation for those wishing to go to Spain but can't afford the airline ticket. Pros: Food, Ambience, Service more

Great Spanish restaurant! 8/1/2003

This restaurant was a hit for our family. We had the lamb meatballs (a dinner special) and the baby squid with fennel sausage, both as appetizers. We all had seafood--the halibut, the ahi, the monkfish and rock cod--and it was excellent, especially the monkfish. Everything was flavorful and rich. We were however, disappointed with the serving portion of paella, which would have realistically fed only one. But the friendly service and sexy atmosphere here cannot be beat! Pros: prompt service, great wine list, good dessert options more

Great Tapas for Lunch 1/14/2003

Great lunch spot for tapas. Very flavorful prawns, excellent jamon serrano, wonderful mussels and an endless bucket of bread to soak up the sauces. Good service. Crowded and a little pricey but good overall lunch experience. Pros: great tapas, attentive service Cons: crowded, noisy, pricey more

Nice atmosphere, poor food 10/14/2002

Ate here Saturday night on vacation. Pleasant outside environment along with 4-5 other restaurants along this restaurant alley. Now the food. I live in NJ outside Newark and eat paella all the time in genuine Spanish and Portugese restaurants as well as several trips to Spain and Portugal. B44 say they specialize in paella so I tried it. Their version is what I would call fast food paella. Mushy rice, bland seafood, prepared on a skillet. Very disappointed with it and for $20 I expected more seafood. Reminded me of fast food paella I had in Spain once for $5. Nothing like the real thing. My wife's dish of monk fish and seafood was much better. Waiter surprisingly didn't recommend the sangria which I found surprising so we did not try it. We would not go here again. Try one of the other restauants on this alley first. more

Okay, but not great 8/12/2002

Was very excited about this place until I waited at bar. Waited 20 minutes for an expensive drink and didn't get my change back! Food was a step up. The jamon serrano is like butta. Paella was a bit disappointing--greasy & salty. Seanyboy's steak was tender, juicy, good. Service was so-so, but it was crazy busy. Living in Spain for a year, I expected more of this place. They're right on with jamon and sangria, but everything else was very average. Cons: Crowded more

Salut i Forca el Canut!!! 7/31/2002

Excellent Catalan cuisine! We came for dinner twice to B44 during our short trip to San Francisco. My boyfriend is Catalan and he said that this place was just like home. The dishes are flavourful and authentic. Romescada, which is a dish of assorted seafood prepared with Romesco sauce, was excellent. Most dishes are prepared in clay pans, so there is plenty of flavourful juices from vegetables and seafood that go great with the fresh, crusty bread that is brought to every table. Monkfish and arroz negro (black rice) were also cooked to perfection. The wine list featured some of the best catalan wines, like Vina Esmeralda and Gran Vina Sol. And you absolutely have to try Brazo de Gitano, a sponge roll filled with chocolate mousse and served with raspberry sauce. The waiters and staff were very friendly and efficient. The restaurant decor was contemporary with catalan motifs. more
