Love their decor, however, the service and food quality didn't live up to our expectation. We ordered the following: 1.Duck vindaloo arepa--Over priced for the 4 mini not so flavorful open-faced sandwiches; 2.Coconut chili mussels --This dish had nice flavors. however, mussels used were NOT fresh(picked out 4 bad ones in a bowl of 15). When I told the waiter about the bad mussels, he just replied""sorry, i will tell the chef"", and that was the end of it. That was just bad service. For that alone I will not return; 3.Chimichurri NY strip--It was served over a bed of Bok Choy. Gf liked very much although it was overcooked for the medium doneness she had requested. 4. dark chocolate molten cake - so called flourless cake was a waste of money. Sorry sorbet and ginger just don't go together! Overall, I would say this was subpar for a iron chef want to be restaurant. more

order main entree, not tasting menu 12/16/2010

Just went for the groupon for a 10 course tasting menu. Overall, I would say the value is no more than $65. The place was empty, but they put us at a very narrow table. None of the dishes is particular memorable. All are just one-bite size. The NY strip red chimichurri was too hard to bite. The lobster portuguese (which is their best signature dish) is tasty, but the lobster meat is not fresh (frozen kind). We order another entree -- Mexican cornflake fish, which instead was the best of the meal. However, the plate was cold when they served so the food cooled of in 5 minutes. Generally it is a nice midtown restaurant, but it doesn't make the top of my gourmet picks. more

Awfully disappointing 12/29/2009

We've been wanting to go since At Vermilion opened. Heard about and had seen the space... just lovely. Had heard and read mixed reviews, but wanted to try such an interesting menu... figured that not all people enjoy fusion. We went a week ago, on a weeknight. Only a few tables were occupied. It's a nice space, and large. With all the empty tables we wondered how long this will last (could be slow due to holiday week?) By the time the food came it was clear this place is in trouble. The food was just awful and disappointing. We got the red meat tasting menu, a few appetizers, and lots of sides, so had a good variety to sample. The appetizers were tasty, but the rest just wasn't good. And we really wanted to like it! On the plus side, the service was above par, so we didn't hate our experience entirely, just the food. The restaurant was almost empty when we dined there. There were flies around us, and the food was gross-I had the lobster, which came out 1 hour later and half way frozen!Their food has too many spices w/no direction, portions were small, served on very big (empty) plates-hours after you order it, they never place it all at once on the table,so some plates are cold by the time someone else gets their food - horrible!! I never had a pleasant experience there. We also had a chance to speak with the owner and her husband - they were both very rude and proud people. I will not go back there, and I certainly do not recommend this restaurant unless you want crappy food and service, and want to be kicked our as soon as you receive your entree (hours after you order it). I'm a fan 5/29/2009

I have to admit, I was really surprised at the below reviews. I have been to At Vermilion twice; once for dinner about 2 weeks ago and once for drinks and apps at the bar last night. Both times were a great experience for me. Was the food to die for? No but I still really loved the Artichoke pakoras and find the rest of their food very interesting and enjoyable. The staff, from the waiter to the bartender, were fantastic both times I went to this place and very attentive. It wouldnt surprise me if the owner/manager read some of these reviews and made some major changes by the time I started going. more

Cool space; Odd location Beautiful space; Odd location 3/4/2009

Had dinner on a sunday night. Knowledgeable waiter, good service overall. Food was interesting. It was as if they took a bunch of indian spices and threw them together. Artichoke pakoras and strip steak were delicious. Ginger pomegranate martini was also good. For dessert we had the chocolate cake that came with a weird tasting blueberry sorbet. The best part of the whole night was that Salman Rushdie was sitting at the table next to ours. more

Everything about this place is AWFUL 2/15/2009

Food is awful. Our waiter was fine at the beginning of the meal, but disappeared as the evening wore on and we never saw him again. Last but not least, the ladies' room was filthy with water and dirt on the floor and an overflowing waste can. This restaurant will be closed within months and they deserve to fail. Horrible. more

All 5 stars are given by some person from the restaurant. The place is really HORRIBLE. All marketing and wining about recession etc, but the food is really bad. No doubt its always empty. more

$16 for a glass of inexpensive redwine. That's all I have to say. It's disgusting the prices they think they can get away with. The place will be closed by April 15, 2009 Pros: Ambiance Cons: Expensive and food isn't that great more

My boyfriend and went to this new outlet for some drinks. Tried some of the tapas. Wasn't that impressive.The waiter told us to recommend some very good Sous chef to train the Main Chef. Unique concept 12/9/2008

Perfect example of contemporary food and decor. The food is extraordinary and full of surprises. I was there for my anniversary and the overall experience blew me out, right from my amuse. The lychee passion fruit granita to mysore lamb chop, duck vindaloo arepa, spicy lamb shank, perfectly cooked new york strip left us craving for more. Would have loved to try their entire menu only if we were not full up to the brim. Will definitely go back for experiencing their remaining menu. Pros: amazing margarita's and food. Friendly service. Perfect place for special occasions. more

After having heard from a friend we decided to chq .This place out. We were 6 of us ,all of us tried the cocktails.I tried the so energetically called Peni pori margarita. Disgusting taste. How could any bartender in good lounge / club ever serve such a drink. My friends decided to eat so I too tried the dishes . All the attempts of using a big selection of components have been tried but none of us were happy with the food part at all. It looks good except the jumping men.That gives the place a rediculous feel. A lot of loose strings hanging all over,if put together well ,decor,service and most importantly the food....All of us agreed ,the restaurant has not been put together properly. WOW!! 12/2/2008

I dined at ""At Vermilion"" and all I can say was that I was totally blown away. The ambiance is trendy and chic. The drinks - my favourite Pear Jalapeno and cucumber mint, were unexpected and delicious. The Tapas looked amazing and tasted even better - loved the duck vindaloo arepa and the artickokes. The entree's didn't let us down- the skirt steak, I am going back just for that, the tamarind ribs and the lamb shank gassi were cooked to perfection. It was an amazing culinary experience and I will be a regular there. Pros: Food, drinks ambiance Cons: can't think of anything more

Went in with a lot of hope and fun. Impressed with the decor not the food. The food idea is not bad but what works in Chicago was good by Chicago Standards.The Layon of the 21st century has needs, levels of excellence , stamina and perceiverience much beyond even the old world institutions. Hugs,touches and kisses etc etc included by the owner in FEEDBAG ,a bit too much obvious for media attention. Here We no longer judge a restaurant by gimics. Experience is the good word here.Just 4 years of cooking is far away from calling oneself a rockstar.We weretold the owner keeps looking for new Sous Chefs for every few days to assist and retrain the Chef .An interesting new approach.Its not a sin to say one needs more experience in the cooking end. theBig ideas need better hands in big city. Pros: beautiful ambience Cons: food not up to the mark more
