Editorial review from Citysearch 1/19/2014

My son attended ASM Music School in Cooper City. He started in 4th grade and continued through high school graduation. He attended individual lessons, band, and jazz group. He made lifelong friends at the school. We were very involved in Show Band and Festival. It is a great experience for the students as well as a great place to learn music. He continues to play in a band that practices at the school to this day. We love ASM. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 1/17/2014

Both of my daughters are currently attending ASM in Cooper City and they're enjoying a fun experience. Both girls didn't initially share the same interest in their instruments, but as time has passed and we've kept up on their practicing diligently as parents, now the girls are starting to see the value of being able to play together. This is further cemented by their attending band. While we can't go every week, they are seeing some of the same faces and making a few friends here and there-kids that play another instrument for example. Who knows, maybe one day they'll form a band of their own. They attended their first festival last year and they keep asking about when the next one will be. more

Parents taking their kids to ASM are being abusive and lazy 8/24/2009

My ex-wife took my son to that place against my wishes because she was lazy and didn't know any better and it was close to where she lives. I could tell they were full of it but didn't want to be confused with the facts. My son LOVES guitar and practices constantly but said their assignments were a joke and he mostly progressed because of books I gave him during that time. After 1 1/2 years, I started looking through craigslist and found a teacher, teaching out of his home about 10 minutes away from ASM. My son says he learns more each lesson now than he learned for a year and a half at ASM. When I read reviews about what a ""bargain"" ASM is, I have a hard time believing they're for real because ASM was constantly finding excuses to keep requiring us to purchase things for ridiculous prices and it never seemed to let up. Every time I talk to this teacher, you can tell he knows what he's talking about while at ASM, they always sound like they're just hyping themselves and trying to convince you that you're not really getting ripped off. When I tell our new teacher the things that ASM was requiring of us, he made very convincing arguments to indicate how unnecessary and dishonest ASM's claims were and he's proven it through my son's rapid improvement and my son credits to the new teacher. Just a father's opinion. Cons: Constantly digging their hands into your pocked more

asm music lessons 8/19/2009

Don't know about guitar man, but I didn't buy the instrument they tried to sell to us for my child because we had one. They did tell me I had to pay $27.95 instead of $19.95 to continue the lessons because I didn't buy the instrument from them. I still think the lessons are a good bargain for the price. Try craigslist and see if anyone will give you a lesson for $19.95 or $27.95 even. more

This ""school""/store is a disgrace 7/16/2009

Their ""curriculum"" is typical, outdated filler intended to milk and stall their students for as long as they can. It's the old trick of throwing everything at every student but the kitchen sink and make them feel like they are not serious if they don't swallow all of it. The owner uses every manipulative, mind game on the parents he can throw at them and the same with his staff. If this 2beam is really a parent, they are brainwashed, lying or just the owner creating his own review. No one comes out of that place happy. More accurately, ASM tries to own their students and they have no respect for their clients. The teachers are basically cheap labor with high turnover. It takes a while for them to realize that it's not a good career move to have this place on their resume. The tactics this places employs would be illegal in other states. Whoever wrote that favorable review is either lying or clueless. If your child is a singer/songwriter interested in acoustic guitar, TOO BAD you are required to purchase an ELECTRIC guitar if you want to continue lessons past the ""evaluation period"" of six weeks. I have been reading about dishonest music ""school""/stores and how to detect them on Craigslist and this scam ""school"" is using most of the tactics those posts warned about. I was amazed! Registration fees are a ""big red flag"" of a scam and this place has the highest of all of the stores that I have called. ""Rock ensemble"" classes are a big time waster. I felt like I was watching a music school versions of those ""be a model"" or ""be a star"" scams. I have heard so many story's from parents who have been bullied and embarrassed in front of their kids with the same tactics described in previous review with the owner flying off into a forced, melodramatic and loud tantrum if you do not sign up and purchase their cheapo guitars for 10 times the retail price. Personally, I am surprised that so many parents can be so easily conned by this scam. There are so many obvious warnings! In May they have this expensive ""recital where kids are forced to play long before they are ready and it is so traumatic that they're constantly throwing up backstage for this ""school's"" photo-op and you will see rock ensembles of kids all playing $4000 and $5000 jazz guitars that are inappropriate for the style because they were pressured into it. Lessons do not need to be expensive and you do not need expensive instruments and honest stores don't just add on another fee just for the honor of doing business with them. If you care about your musical progress or your child's musical education, this place shouldn't even be at the bottom of your list. This place gives music education a bad name and it's too bad so many parents are too lazy to research their children's music education but their clientele is what the owner likes to call people who have ""more dollars than sense."": Pros: There are NO pluses Cons: $45 dollar registration Fee. You are REQUIRED to buy.. more

ASM IS NOT A SCAM 1/30/2009

I'm a single parent who also has a son taking guitar lessons. AND I BOUGHT THE INSTRUMENT THRU ASM. Iglove are you crazy? With everything you get at ASM you are NUTS not to keep your son in there! They also have structured band lessons as well as private lessons. My sone gets a minimum of 2 and a half hours a week. All for $19.95 per week. Pros: family orientated, great value/eeducational Cons: CAN'T THINK OF ANY more

Scam, stay away! 12/14/2008

Took my son to this school after they called soliciting at my home. My son was taking private guitar lessons that were getting out of our budget, the school told us that there would be an evaluation period where the classes would be $19.95, after that if we bought an instrument from the school, then the price would remain the same, if not it would go up to $29.95. Simple enough we thought, my son has a kids acoustic guitar and we were thinking of getting him an electric guitar for Christmas. Well, after the evaluation period passes you get to meet the owner, a man who goes by Mr. Ray. He tries to push an electric guitar for $1200.00! Mind you, our son is 7 years old, we were not planning to spend that kind of money on a 7 year old who is just starting out. Mr. Ray makes you feel stupid if you do not buy his guitar, he does some crazy math and says the guitar will actually be free because your lessons will be less money than if you don't buy the guitar. Huh??? But we will still have to PAY for the guitar upfront. We did not decide right away and told him we would get back to him. After doing some research I find out the the Palmer guitar he is trying to sell us is worth no more than a couple of hundred bucks! When I called him the next day he was downright rude to me, I told him we had not made a decision but would like to continue with the classes for my son, he told me that if he did not have an electric guitar, then he could not take classes there anymore. This was never explained to us when we signed up for the classes. The worst part is that they show the instrument to the kids before the parents are told the price, he get the kids on his side, this is scary. Stay away from this place, a music store I went to told me that they get complaints from people who got sold overpriced instruments from ASM all the time. more
