Love it! 10/4/2008

I have been to Ashmont Grill a bunch - dinner with a group, brunch with the family, drinks and dessert at the bar with a friend, cozy romantic dinner by the fireplace on the patio. All my experiences have been fantastic overall. Maybe I've had the luck to always arrive a the right time, but I've never had to wait for a table even on busy nights. Favorite dish is the mussels with lots of garlic and a bit of spicy chourice flavor to them - I could eat a whole loaf of bread dipping it into that sauce! I particularly like that they offer mostly organic wines and that they try as much as possible to be local about their ingredients, e.g. a delicious heirloom tomato salad this summer. The menu is small-ish, which is fine, but I'd love to see them throw a little more variety into their standard offerings. Desserts are very yummy. My one criticism is that even though it's been around for a while now, they don't seem to juggle wait-service well enough on very busy nights (a forgotten glass of wine, a bit longer than comfortable wait post entree's for coffee/dessert). You can't beat sitting out in the back patio garden however - quiet and secluded, jut the right touch of lighting, and of course the wood-fire if it's cool enough - you feel like you could be ANYWHERE, not in the middle of Dorchester. This place is a boon to the neighborhood. I find it a very welcoming and relaxing place and love that I usually run into people I know there. I'm eager to see what their new place, Tavalo, across the street at the Carruth Center, is like. more

Finally!!! Great food and family friendly 3/24/2008

I've been for brunch and dinner and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. I'm so happy to have a place with great food for the parents and the kids (i.e. we both enjoyed the mac and cheese). The music (80s R&B the night I was there) was great; decor relaxed and service always with a smile. Looking forward to going to the Monday night wine tasting. If you live in Dorchester and haven't checked it out yet...go....now! Pros: Neighborhood spot; great food & service Cons: limted restaurant parking, but street parking usually ok more

Great food, great place 2/26/2008

The Ashmont Grill is a great little bistro! The food is really good and the staff are friendly. Living so close to it I go often. It's great to have this gem in the neighborhood. It's eons above the other crappy places that are close by. I mean, how much crappy pizza and greasy food do you really want to eat. The neighborhood is great and very diverse. i'VE NEVER had a bad meal there yet! I read a review from someone named ""Wolfe..."" who stated not to go into the neighborhood Well ain't that a blip coming from someone that calls themself ""WOLFE""!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Superlative experience 3/5/2006

I simply cannot effuse enough compliments about our experience. We were seated promptly and attended to regularly throughout the night. Our water glasses were always full and our food was brought promptly. Our many specific demands (based on some finicky eaters) were accomodated nicely. The food was simply great. From the salads, to the generous main courses, to the sumptuous desserts, this ""tough to please"" crowd was wowed. The prices were very fair and the ambience was fitting for a neighborhood restaurant. My folks--experienced diners--commented on just how nice a change it was to dine in a ""comfort-food""-plus atmosphere. Congrats to the Ashmont Grill for a job well done. We will be back many times and will bring many others in tote. Frankly, I am sick and tired of paying absolutely ridiculous prices to dine in Boston, only to be disappointed by redundant pretention and portions fit for a mole. Pros: Below Boston prices, Great food, Accomodative to kids more

Poor service, Nice atmosphere 2/20/2006

My girlfriend and I went to the Ashmont Grille this past Sunday. We were seated right away (it was almost 8PM), which would have been great if it didn't take our waitress 10 minutes to greet us. After having our hearts set on the Cod that the couple next to us had recommended as delightful, we were informed by our waitress that they had just sold the last one. Strike two. Next, I set my sites on the Ginger soup. When it arrived, it took me a few spoonfuls to realize that it was definitely not Ginger soup. It turned out to be Potato Leek (which was very good by the way). Maybe the recent Improper Bostonian article had caused a surge of business that they are were ill-prepared for, but you may want to give them some time to focus on the most important part of doing business...customer service!! Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Service more

It is what it is 2/5/2006

Chris Douglas was looking to create a comfortable upscale restaurant in the ""hood"". He has accomplished just that. When there is already a wait at 5:30, you know he's doing something right. The Ashmont Grill is friendly and relaxed and the food is creative, comfort food. I'm not sure he was sincere in his goal to make it affordable for local families. The original price of entrees is reasonable but it is served a la carte, even down to the bread. Dinner can add up when all is said and done. But the salads were crisp and ample, mussels had a subtle charm, the chicken had a delicious herb crust, the bolognese was hearty. Luckily I read the reviews and saved room for dessert. The chocolate torte was sinful. Pros: relaxed, friendly Cons: a la carte, no parking more

not impressed 1/13/2006

Having heard much ado about the Ashmont Grill. my partner and I went last night for dinner. While were seated immediately, the tablescape was barren and uninviting. Tablecloths would help soften the hard wood and brick environment, as well as some upholstered chairs. The ambiance is ""hard"" in a word. The service was awful, the food mediocre, and the handcut fries were dried-out and overseasoned. Way overpriced and overated. A nice bar area though, but not comfortable for dining. Go to ""dbar"" down dot. ave! Pros: bar area Cons: dinigroom ambiance more

Great new place! 11/15/2005

I went to the Ashmont Grill with 3 friends a couple weeks ago. The restaurant was very busy inside. However, the hostess was able to seat us on the outside patio right away. Great atmosphere out there with the heat lamps and firepit! For appetizers, we had the ""train wreck fries"", which were excellent. All 4 of us had different entrees, and everyone enjoyed. The pizzas were fantastic. Also, the pumpkin cheesecake was great. I definitely recommend this place, and from the crowds in there on that Friday night, it looks like it will be a success. It's exactly the type of place that Dorchester needs! Pros: food, atmosphere, outdoor seating more

It looked pretty 10/20/2005

We've tried it twice and each time we really didn't have that good of a dining experience both times we waited over 45 minutes to be seated and the food took forever. The Mussles were good but the Wreck Fries were greasy. As for the entrees Ribs were not meaty and the steak though tasty was not cooked correctly and had to send it back. On our second visit we has the most annoying little waitress it seemed like she couldn't be bothered and hardly checked back with us at all throughout the night. The sides orders were small. ($2.50 for a soup cup of macaroni and cheese) And the food was not served hot. It was pricey for what was offered. And on our second visit we had to call someone over to wipe down the table because it was sticky from the previous customers meal. Cons: Crowded, Bad Service, Long wait for food more

The Ashmont Grill - great addition to Dorchester! 10/7/2005

My husband and I have been to the Ashmont Grill twice since it opened at the beginning of September and we have been impressed both times...the waitstaff is obviously trying to develop rhythm, but the food has been great, the drinks and dessert tasty and it is so affordable. I love the atmosphere also. Casual yet trendy, with a very diverse crowd. This is going to be a regular dining spot for us! Pros: Good food, Atmosphere, Price more
