Editorial review from Citysearch 7/25/2013

Vincent M is the best!! I've been seeing him for almost ten years and I wouldn't dream of letting anyone else cut my hair. He is the man to go to if you need a makeover or something as simple as a trim or a fringe. Highly recommend!! more

Bennett is the man! 9/6/2011

I met Bennett when he was still a student at Arrojo. He was great then and is even better now since he has graduated. He listens to what you want and offers wonderful suggestions. He is very meticulous when working out layers which I love. He also gives the best shampoo/ hair massage ever! Bennett is the best! more

I LOVE LOURDES 7/25/2011

I heard about Lourdes at my job...I read some of her reviews online and decided to Book with her. She is the best colorist I've ever ever experienced..extremely warm, personable and a kick ass colorist. I tend to be a little anal about EVERYTHING...and she somehow convinced me to jump with her on this color experience. I really really LOVE my hair. I feel younger, hipper and a lot sexier. We did the ombre effect. Very natural fading effect on the hair. I enjoyed Arrojo very much...also the prosciuto paninni at the cafe is to die for. I'll definitely be coming back to Arrojo and to my favorite colorist Lourdes more

NICOLE IS THE BESTTTTTTTT!! 7/14/2011

I decided to look into Arrojo Studios after seeing him on What Not To Wear and checked out a few of the stylist on his page. I chose Nicole after reading some reviews and saw that she was on Sheer Genius. I have to say I LOVE NICOLE!! She is really nice, friendly, and just REAL...which I have to say some here are NOT!! I decided to check her out after years of going to someone who would cut my hair in layers and it pretty much looked the same with no volume. Nicole asked what I wanted and I said, make me look like a VS Model!! And that's what she did!! She took her time to cut my hair piece by piece and made sure the layers were cut correctly. My hair looked beautiful. I am now a regular and have referred many of my friends to her. They also LOVED the results. I have nothing bad to say, my experience was GREAT!! more

Salon is a SCAM! 6/12/2011

I created an account to write a review for this salon because of the atrocious experience that I had here. If I could give a negative rating I would! I went to this salon on May 27th 2011 as a hair model. I answered an ad for a FREE haircut. I corresponded with the student in several emails. At the 11th hour I was switched to her ""friend."" Once I got to the salon I was told there would be a fee of $25. I disputed the fee of course. The front desk girl said verbatim ""we will take care of it."" I took that language to mean that its taken care of. I got the haircut. It was disgusting. It was lopsided. She did a false consultation. She asked me what I wanted but did what she wanted anyways. She didn't ask me any questions about where I part my hair, how I do my hair, my lifestyle etc. Why bother doing a consultation if you're not going to listen? It did not turn out good or even passable. The instructors even said how bad it was and how poor her consultation skills were. At the end I was then forced to pay the fee otherwise it would be theft and I would've probably been arrested. I was also bullied into a product purchase. I had to refuse about 7 times. Seriously people? Obviously I don't want it! I have filed a complaint with the BBB because it is false advertising. I am not a hard to please person. I just think if you advertise something the client should get it as advertised. The responses from the salon and the students involved are ridiculous and out right lies. I was appalled that people can outright lie! It only cements my opinion that the salon has faulty practices that result in negative consequences for the consumer. I am surprised that there aren't more complaints on file. You think this will be a high end salon treatment but you're better off going somewhere else and saving your money. You will not get high end treatment or high end results. more

Rea is the best! 5/16/2011

I was referred to Rea by a waitress while having brunch in the west village. She mentioned that Rea cuts her curly hair and she always gets a lot of compliments. I was a little nervous about having someone new cut my long, super thick curly hair! After explaining to Rea what type of cut i'd like she got to work. The results were F*****G AMAZING! I've gotten tons of compliments & my hair looks great straight or curly!!! I highly recommend Rea she's sweet, fun personality, knows what she's doing and works magic with her hands! I'm definitely going back to Rea and will refer her to all of my friends! more

Amy and David - Dynamic Duo 5/15/2011

I have been going to Arrojo for years! First, I have very challenging hair - lots of grays, brown color that pulls red, course and wavy texture. Amy has been doing my color and making me a ""natural"" blonde for years. I'm tell you, I get compliments on my hair all the time. She tweaks the color and process to give me the most cost effective and time efficient service each and every time. I go every four weeks and she always treats me with complete professionalism as if Im a new client each time. I would recommend anyone to see her that wants to be a blonde. She's relatable, fun, quirky and professional. David does my cut and is so smart, easy to talk to, also incredibly professional. Im so impatient with my hair and hate to wait for it to grow. David gave me a cut to help my hair grow and encouraged me to stick it out when I was frustruated and now I have long hair that looks great. I recommend Arrojo to everyone I know - its fast, they run on schedule, its well-priced and extremely professional. more

Ready for the Runway 5/14/2011

I've been going to Chris and Amy at Arrojo for almost 5 years, now (!), so this review is long overdue. Spurred on by the salon owner Nick Arrojo and his ""What Not To Wear"" fame, my mom first visited the salon and convinced me to become a convert as well. I have long, wavy-curly hair that is fairly easy to cut and style, but it frizzes and flips out and I wasn't thrilled with my mousy-brown natural shade. After spending the day with Chris and Amy, I always emerge looking like nothing short of a supermodel, with shiny, silky tresses that inspire awe from friends and strangers!! At first, I was nervous about getting a razor cut, but don't be! Chris' hairstyles frame your face in those perfect wispy layers, grow out beautifully, and last for months. Also trepidatious about committing to the vicious circle of highlights and roots, I had nothing to fear! Amy's color looks SO natural that the highlights even grow out without visible roots and I only need to go back a few times a year!! The environment is hip and cool with plenty of natural light, great music, and a phenomenal cafe that brings the food to your chair! The assistants are also charming and eager to please, and their product line is actually worth purchasing, especially the serum, deep conditioner, and styling foam! Is it a bit on the expensive side? Yes (but for New York City, it's a wild bargain!). Is it worth every penny? Absolutely. All in all, a day of pampering that restores your faith in the fact that if your hair looks great, you look even better... more

LAX->NYC. Worth it for these 2! 5/13/2011

I also see Amy and Cheryl!!! They are the perfect team - agreed. I have been going to Amy and Cheryl for four years now and I will never trust anyone else with my cut and color. After bouncing around from salon to salon for years I found Cheryl through a friend (a friend who has awesome hair). She is wonderful and gives an awesome cut that frames my face shape perfectly. She has also gone above and beyond by teaching me new and fun ways to style my hair. I have finally perfected the beach wave look all by myself and considering I?m an actress, being able to rock salon hair to auditions is pretty gosh darn important. And then by asking around at the salon I found Amy. And oh my goodness I am so lucky! Amy knows what she is doing, she is confident in her craft, and she is a lovely and wonderful person to boot. When I first went to Amy I thought I wanted one thing and thank goodness she kindly explained that going another direction with my color could ultimately serve me better ? I decided to trust and boy was she right!!!! I love what she does season to season, the slight modifications, attention to detail, and personal touch. I recently moved to Los Angeles and fully plan to travel to NYC to get my hair done. Amy and Cheryl are that good. more

Jessica-Better Curly cut than Devachan 5/13/2011

Jessica gave me her card when she saw me at a cafe in our neighborhood, so I scheduled an appointment not really knowing what I was getting into. I have been going to her for over a year now and have been happy with my hair every time (although, once I thought I would try something different and didn't like the outcome--but the cut was EXACTLY correct and looked just like the one in the Arrojo magazine, which I applaud her for). I have very fine, curly hair. I wear it with bangs and really short layers for a fun and funky look. Jessica has great style and knows how to give me the exact cut I want. I've tried Devachan and do not think the prices are worth it--especially when I can go to Arrojo, which has such a clean and inviting atmosphere. It is honestly such a relaxing experience to get your hair done there and I love all of the products. See Jessica, you really won't be disappointed. more

Love this place... and Amy!! 5/13/2011

I have to high-five the user who posted directly below me, because i also see Amy and Cheryl (for color and cut respectively) and love them both!!!!! (and to the user who posted below that... are you on crack?) Amy's been making my VERY brown hair blond and fabulous for four years now!! I would recommend her to anyone - she always makes sure i leave happy, and most of my friends (who haven't known me that long) think im a natural blonde :) Ive only been seeing Cheryl for about a year now, but she's the first stylist who actually listens when i ask not to have too much length taken off. I've cried before after bad haircuts - but no tears with this one yet! haha. Really, would recommend this salon to anyone - and they have a cafe with a coffee bar and food if you get hungry during your 3 hour visits (im high maintenance, what can i say?:)) more

AMY AND CHERYL = TEAM AWESOME 5/12/2011

My best friend suggested I go to Arrojo when first moved to NYC three years ago. She told my with great confidence to see Amy for my color and Cheryl for a hair cut. I am so happy to say that these two amazing ladies have taken my over processed (I was a bit of a bleach highlight junkie) hair and turned it into a head turning do. Seriously. It is not a day in my life if I don't get a compliment from a stranger. First of all Amy is hands down the queen of red hair. I am a natural blonde and I have always wanted perfect natural looking red hair. For years I fooled around with different shades at my old salon, never quite finding it, and the first time I walk into arrojo and sat in amy's chair she nailed it. The perfect red vibrant with out looking fake and just the right shade of red with out looking orange or brassy. She is meticulous with her work. She always checks and double checks the continuity of my freshly dyed roots with the rest of my color. She is absolutely amazing. She is fantastic at what she does, and a joy to sit and chat with while she works. On that faithful first visit, after sitting with Amy and receive my ideal red, I moved on to Cheryl for a cut. We talked about it and decided to go with a bob. Loved it, and kept it for a few months, then We added bangs 1920's style and it has become my trademark look. I have been rocking this short structured look for about a year now and it gets just as many compliments as my color. Much like Amy Cheryl also has a delightful personality and is easy to sit with and chat while she trims my hair with ease. Hands down arrojo is my favorite salon and Amy and Cheryl are awesome! more

been there done that! unfortunately!!! 5/9/2011

we used to see amy, i say we- my best friend and i- and used to- because we'll never go back! we both feel as though we've been mugged and duped! when we went in, she would talk in circles and confuse us and i think herself. she wasn't the friendliest person every time we were in, but to give her credit she was nice once or twice. the way she would talk to her helpers was just RUDE! no personal touch to the others she worked with. and a bit bossy. and as for the color(?) appalling at times. mine was so flat and almost greenish (i can't even explain actually but the salon i went to for a fix said khaki and mucky) when i went in to get it fixed with her- i walked out feeling like i was stupid because she made me feel that way! of course after being dragged in a circle i couldn't put into to words what i wanted! and my friend went in for a fix and ended up paying for it!!!! that was so ridiculous. she was made to feel she had asked for orange hair! is blonde supposed to be orange???? and the helper with my friend got a brow beating to put it nice. i would think it was the stylist fault and not the helper? isn't that who gets paid for the job? i could go on- but since i've wasted so much time and been mugged enough in this horrible salon, i can't waste another second of my life on them!!! one big plus is too bad it's not just a cafe. i did get a great cappuccino and cookie. but again it's not worth crossing the threshold to give another dime to this (insert word of choice that explains horrible)! wow i feel great now that this is off my chest. more

Seriously...Lourdes is the SH&% 4/26/2011

I went to her based on the reviews I read here. I wanted to go red. I came in with virgin hair...never colored my hair in my life. I knew the change would be drastic. I was EXTREMELY nervous. She spoke to me for about 5min...getting to know me a bit. Looked at me finally and said...you can rock this...are you ready...At this point I felt nauseus. Anyway....the color was PERFECT! As soon as the assistant started blowing me out, I was a new person...I felt in such good hands. I was me but better. I want to praise Lourdes for her skills and also for making me feel like a new woman. I will definitely come back. Arrojo was a great experience and Lourdes is everything they say she is. Thanks again! more

LOURDES LOURDES LOURDES 2/6/2011

I' ve been going to Lourdes since she was doing models in her apprenticeship (3yrs ago). I'ver never had someone be so creative with my hair. She always says my hair is easy because my natural is so light. but I've been to other places where all evidence points to the contrary. I am a bleach and tone now, she just recently did it...I also have a few periwinkle pieces infused in the hair and it looks STUNNING. The salon is HUGE, really beautiful space. Her assistants are always great and easygoing. I love love going to Lourdes, sometimes I have to cheat on her since I travel a lot for work and I always regret it. I love her personality, she's super easy to get along with. The only thing is, she likes to be in charge, you can have your imput but at the end of the day she wants you to trust her skills. I do wholeheartedly...but if your someone who need things explained 100 times you might want someone else. However, trusting Lourdes with my hair is one of the best things I've ever done for myself. Love Arrojo Studio! more

Consistent and beautiful hair! 2/3/2011

I've been to Arrojo several times and the staff is so professional and friendly. I had my haircut by the wonderful John Shannon, he is so attentive and detailed. I go in open about the end result and I am always very happy!!!!! John is wonderful with short hair, he can do a terrific classic bob or something sleek and modern!!!He is also great to visit if you need a an awesome blow-out for a night out or an event! Great work by awesome people! more

travel to magical lands of arrojo 1/20/2011

i love this place. this place is like therapy. it's like.... a therapeutic mind / body / hair rejuvenation session complete with herbal teas / coffee (or cappuccino or a latte) / cookies / head massages, elegant black robes, and relationship / life advice counseling sessions with emily carroll and ashley kowalski. i do cuts with emily - who usually envisions the look i'm going for for even before i know it myself (i kinda think she might be some kind of magical hair nymph from lord of the rings). usually after she's done i transcend reality into another dimension and i morph into some rare species of new york city's blonde nymphs or other fae-like equivalent. I do my color (highlights) with ashley kowalski. i have no idea how this girl does it (maybe it's the extensive skills training that all arrojo stylists are required to take, maybe it's her undeniably obvious knowledge about what's cool, maybe it's her impeccable style....?) but the overall feeling of euphoria upon leaving the salon is a phenomenon i am currently incapable of describing with words. translation = if you are blonde and you like to look hot, ask for ashley kowalski. if you dont go here, you're basically missing out on feeling like Cleopatra for a day! Go HERE! more

REDHEADS=LOURDES 4 COLOR 1/19/2011

Lourdes and I have been through a LOT with my hair. I wanted to do something 'normal' to go with my new job. She told me red was my color, that it was fun to play with. Anyway...We did it!!! It is the MOST amazing shade I've ever had. It's so preety and shiny. I left feeling a bit shocked, but I really love it now. Lourdes I love you! Thx for making me look HOT! more

Inconsistent - from the top down 1/15/2011

I've been to Nick 3 times and his wife 2 times. Of the five times I've been to the salon, I've gotten 2 good cuts. My main issue with Nick is his attitude. If you're not willing to put yourself in his hands completely [like you're a specimen on What Not to Wear], he becomes rather dismissive. God forbid, you should actually have an opinion about how you want to look. The first cut I got from him was excellent though and it lasted a solid 8 weeks. The last one was a disaster and I had to get it recut elsewhere 3 weeks later. I will not return. The other gripe I have is the constant pushing of product. The problem is that the products - from shampoos to conditioners to brushes - are the worst I've ever used. Absolutely awful. I spent hundreds on products and brushes and literally threw every last item away. The bottles were full. more
