Food is delicious, service is lousy 2/20/2009

I often order lunch from Aoki because the cost of the 2 for $9 or 3 for $11 special is irresistible. That said, I place the order an hour and a half before I need it since I know that it will be a long wait. I highly recommend the spicy crunchy salmon, sweet potato roll, and eel anything. Pros: Food, lunch special prices Cons: Bad service, no regard for their customers more

Great sushi, terrific atmosphere, reasonable prices. 11/10/2008

Service was quick and attentive. Restaurant was not crowded so we were seated immediately but it was a Monday night. Best dish of the night: calamari with ginger sauce. Wow! more

awesome place 9/29/2008

A great place to hang out with friends and have a drink. The variety of Japanese dishes available is awesome. It's delicious and very authentic. The food comes in small portions so be prepared to spend a little more. Pros: staff.ambiance more

awesome tartar, great prices 8/24/2008

I like sushi but not for a night on the town. The place was nice, sushi was actually amazing and the tartare special they had with caviar and egg yolf was truly a surprise. The prices were amazing also. Pros: Amazing food, amazing prices Cons: Too close to Times Square more

Always fresh sushi and good customer service 8/12/2008

Good food, good service fresh sushi ..... Not in the class of Morimoto or KOI. Pros: Fresh sushi Cons: nothing special about their menu.. more

fast, delicious, and reasonably priced! 4/7/2008

GREAT place for fast delivery, good fresh food, and good price!!! I've always done take out at Aoki - they deliver within 30 minutes! Pros: cheap / fresh / fast! more

Great food and ambiance. Reasonable prices and great service! 1/14/2008

Went this past Friday with a party of four. Attentive service by multiple hosts/hostesses. Wine choices were very good (surprising for a sushi place). Tranquil waterfall in the dining room was a nice touch. We had some unique dishes/rolls and all were delicious. BBQ Chilean Sea Bass roll, Amazing spicy mix was just that. Spicy mixed sushi formed into a star shape and covered in black caviar and a quail egg. It was wonderful. We will return and highly recommend it to others. Reasonable prices didn?t hurt, either! Pros: Food, service more

Best Cheap Japanese in NYC 1/8/2008

I found this place this summer. I've been to a ton of japanese/sushi restaurants in NYC and this is definitely my favorite. The decor is trendy and modern, but the prices are really low. The lunch special is especially amazing. This is all not mentioning the food, which is great in itself. Overall, a great spot. If you're in the area, especially around lunch time, make sure to stop by. Pros: Food, style, service, value Cons: In kind of a weird location more

Creative menu and trendy decor 6/4/2007

Very good sushi and portions. Trendy decor and friendly service. Seating in booths could use back cushions as seats are spaced far from tables. Creative menu (Edamame soup!), with over 90 choices. more

Quite a find in the Theater District - Quiet, great food & WONDERFUL staff!! 3/29/2007

I went here by myself after a long day working and wanted to find a nice sushi bar, close to my hotel (the Doubletree) where I could sit, wind down and read my novel over sake and a few sushi bites. Many of the sushi bars in NY are very expensive & noisy and I was pleased to find one within walking distance at a very reasonable price range. They have great rolls and super fresh fish. The presentation of each piece is very nice as well. There was NO ONE in there when I got there at about 8:00PM (which, after eating there, I was very surprised to find) . Service was excellent from all. Pros: Everything, great for couples, fresh food, nice simple decor Cons: Not really any, unless you are going there to socialize and meet people more

Great find in the Theatre District 2/15/2007

This restaurant has had me coming back on an almost daily basis. First of all, the food is very well done - simple, straightforward, and plated artistically, but without ridiculous amounts of flair. The prices make the place an absolute steal. My usual is the three roll combo (my fav is the eel & avocado) + soup or salad for $10, which will fill you up without killing your wallet. The service is also exceptionally quick and diligent (your water or cup of tea will never go empty), which is a HUGE plus for lunch. Pros: Value, ambience, quick lunch service Cons: The table can get crowded.... the plates are a little too big. more

Average food, better than average service. 12/25/2006

A little overrated I believe. While the rolls were interesting and good, the sashimi was less than average. The interior was very neat to see and watch the waterfalls, but when I was sat on a hard plank wood bench... I guess I was in the mood for a chair that evening. Pros: neat place inside Cons: food could use some work. more

A nice find! 11/10/2006

Went on a Saturday early evening and did not have to wait for a table. The interior is nice. We enjoyed trying the special rolls... interesting combinations and VERY tasty. The menu also has all of the standard rolls reasonably priced... they were good, but would come back again to try some more of the special rolls. They were memorable! With one appetizer, 5 rolls, 2 ice creams, 1 cocktail, and 3 beers the bill came out in the $80 range.... awesome for all the food, drinks, and ambience. We will definitely return and bring some friends!! Pros: Food, Ambience, Price more

Excellent Japanese Restaurant 9/6/2006

I found this place because it was recommended by an actress in a playbill. I've been to many Japanese restaurants and I was very impressed with this place. The atmosphere and food was great. I was thoroughly impressed with the service (amazing!) and hostess' knowledge of sake. It turned out that she normally works as a server but I believe hosts one night of the week. She is also the one who orders the sake for the restaurant. If you love sake, she is the person to ask (wish I got her name). Her recommendations were right on target. more

A real theatre district find 9/4/2006

Discovered this based on wanting Sushi and needing a place near a particular Broadway theatre. I eat in a lot of Japanese restaurants and this is definitely a cut above. As noted by other reviewers, very nice ""hip but not too hip"" design - a large waterfall adds a nice restful sound. Fish in the sushi was very fresh, and presentation was quite impressive. Several special hand rolls we ordered had unusual combinations of ingredients that really worked. For the quality of the sushi, the prices are very reasonable. Waiters were also excellent - friendly and attentive but not hovering. I will definitely return! Pros: Quality of sushi, service, value more

great stuff 8/30/2006

I go here at lease once a week for lunch. I usually get 3 rolls for $10, sometime the Shr. Better than any of those other places like Monster or whatever. They are all sub-par and are rip-offs. Screw them. This place rocks and would like to try dinner there soon. PS, don't sit at the sushi bar, it's mine. more

Trendy decor, Excellent Food, Nice Portion 6/28/2006

This place is amazing. All around I was very impressed with my first visit to Aoki. Everything from the ambiance to the wait staff and most important the food was first rate. Everything was done to perfection. The Chilian sea Bass and tuna steak was out of this world. The Salmon tartar and tuna carparcio was worth going back for more! Amazing sushi. excellent roll and well prepared. I need to go back and try more on the menu... I highly reccomend this place!!!!!!!! Pros: Top Notch Quality, Good Sushi more

Good, not great dining 6/21/2006

Ambiance, service, presentation...all very nice. We had the ceviche for an appetizer and three rolls for dinner. Everything tasted fine, but nothing exceptional to entice us to return instead of trying something else that's new. more

good pre theater spot for dinner or drinks 6/14/2006

Also dropped in after work and they had happy hour drink specials. Pros: menu, decor/setting, good cocktails more
