Culinary experience not to be missed. by Thomas S. at InsiderPages 11/18/2008

When near Queen Village make sure not to miss out on Chef David Ansill's remarkable food. Each time I have dined there I have experienced new and exciting dishes, the menu is geared more to foodies and those who delight in wonderfully prepared bone marrow, Charcuterie and new interpretations of classic dishes. A strong mix of small and larger plates - perfect for sharing. Not a place for cheap eats - but you will have an excellent culinary experience in a comfortable, relaxed environment. more

Really good food by Christa C. at InsiderPages 11/18/2008

Go on a slow night like a Monday and just relax with wine and share a bunch of the dishes. There is alot of meat on the menu, but everything is delicious. Try the pork belly and the blue cheese and honey. There are some great food combos here and it's darkish and can feel cozy. more

The food is exceptional and the menu offers the ability to taste many different flavors. The plates are medium sized and will come out in random order. It provides a laid-back atmosphere with upscale food and good service that spreads the food over many deliveries. Pros: Variety of selection including wine and beer more

We're from NYC and on a weekend trip to Philly-we spent 2 of the most delicious hours of our life at Ansill. Lucky enough to try 8 courses of their incredible small plates fare-we left in a in a delirious haze of satisfaction and joy. Truly the definition of a celebration-we loved every bite. Can't wait to go back. Big ups to the talented MS. sous chef. ;) Pros: wine. food. staff. loved it all. Cons: none. more

Would NOT reccomend dining 10/12/2007

As we go into, for lack of a better word, "tavern", we are seated by a noisy window and a wobbly table. We also happened to be there on a day people were protesting the foie gras that is served at Ansills. The place was very noisy, and not due to the people, due to the LOUD music that was blasting that did not fit the atmosphere. Our server Maureen, did not greet our table until ten minutes after we were seated. Meanwhile she stood at the hostess stand reading a book. Very vague with food descriptions as well. None of the dishes I would say were exceptional, aside from the osso bucco and steak tartare. After dining I came across this article as well. hugsforpuppies. o r g /ansil l-restaurant- philadelphia. html I really have nothing more to say after reading that. I just chose not to dine here anymore. Pros: osso bucco steak tartare Cons: long wait for food, noisy, poor service more

A delight for your palate 9/20/2007

Went with a group of 10 for a birthday dinner and had such an amazing time thanks to Ed and the wonderful staff at Ansill. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered an array of small plates and passed them around the table while the wine flowed freely. The atmosphere lends itself to a relaxing experience that is anything but ordinary. The beef tartare was amazing and the cheeses were a crowd pleaser. Ask your server to suggest a wine and you will not be disappointed. more

A little overrated 4/26/2007

Any restaurant that has received such great reviews in press will surely disappoint a new diner, not because the food is necessarily bad or the service is necessarily faulty, but because you cannot live up to the hype. Ansill was surely no exception. As you enter the restaurant, you are faced with an absurdly intense cheese scent - I love stinky cheeses but not restaurant that smell like stinky cheeses. A better air handling system would be nice. The bar area is comfortable and the barwoman was very knowledgeable and pleasant. The food service was attentive and prompt, and the dining area is pleasant. As for the food, the tapas dishes are tasty but really tiny (be prepared to order a LOT of them to get a full meal) and the prices are high for such tiny offerings. Once again, the tapas concept is used to justify charging high prices for small offerings. I would call Ansill $$$ based on the ratio of food portion per price. The final bill was high for the amount of food sampled. It was a very nice meal and a nice evening, but I wouldn't go back. Amada offers similarly good food with better prices and ambiance. more

Adventure with food 4/9/2007

With reservations they were ready for 6 of us on a Thursday evening. We were ready to try the adventurous menu. Some dishes we tried and liked were the Venison Tartare, hanger steak, fingerling potatoes, roasted pepers, and tuna. For dessert I highly recommend the banana chocolate sandwich - it was awesome. Pros: service, dessert Cons: can get noisy, if the lot is full it can be hard to find parking more

Wonderful surprise 6/3/2006

They didn't take reservations, but took my name and how many were in my party. There were 6 of us on a Saturday night, so I was worried about getting seated right away. When I walked in, they told me that they were expecting me and that our table was just being cleared. For a place that "doesn't take reservations", they went out of their way to make sure we had a table on time. Food was just as great. They have selections that range for just about anyone. A little loud, so if you want intimate conversation, this isn't the place. I will be back next weekend. A++ Pros: Food, Service, Bar was great! Cons: Noisy more

Ansill for President! 4/27/2006

Loved his Pif and am now in love with his namesake, Ansill. Food is definitely adventurous but I would recommend every dish I tried without hesitation. The shirred eggs left me wondering how he was able to develop all those layers of flavor in such a small dish. The cheeses were fantastic and paired perfectly with fruity counterparts. The wine list was also great and thoughtfully constructed to accompany the varied menu (they kept our bottle of white on ice). Almost a full 24 hours later and my mouth begins to salivate when I think about all the dishes we tried yesterday. Oh, don't miss the bone marrow (tiny but it packs a punch)! [Misc: 4-toppers in the back room for small groups, open kitchen in back, pay lot 1/2 blk away, trendy bar & bar area] Pros: Friendly staff, Sharing plates, Impeccable Menu Cons: Small for big groups more

Bye Bye Judy's! 4/25/2006

What a great spot. The interior is a perfect combination of casual warmth, class, but flexible with its wide-open windows that give you a slice of Queen Village atmosphere. The food was excellent. High quality AND they take reservations, have a great bar, great tapas / small plates, reasonably prices, all with a VERY GOOD wine list. For one bottle of a very nice wine ($32) and 8 dishes, we spent the same amount as we did at the new Django on just food! This is a neighborhood competitor that has more space, highly-crafted food, great service, & very good wine list. I can totally see it being a great place for a lively dinner on a weekend. Food: Octopus, cheeses, scallops, salad, sauteed cauliflower, lockseverything was perfect. Wonderfully done. And no offense, but Id go back to Ansill 100 times before I went back to Piff. Sorry! Thanks! Pros: food, wine, service Cons: bit loud more
