Little Miss Sunshine 8/20/2006

This is absolutely a delightful film. The ensemble is made up of Steve Carrell (as you've never seen him before - in a serious role) and Greg Kinnear lead, with Toni Collette as the mother trying to keep it all together and Alan Arkin as the drug using grandfather. There is a teenage son who doesn't say a word (this is brilliant acting) and of course, the little girl (Abigail Breslin, who you may recognize from Raising Helen and some Law & Orders). This great film is about a seriously messed up family driving from New Mexico to California so their daughter can compete in the "Little Miss Sunshine" child beauty pageant. It's painful, hilarious, and a truly sweet story about what you do as a family to help the ones you love. It is rated R for some strong language and 2 scenes with drug use. This is not a family film, but it is a film about family. I will definitely buy this on DVD when it comes out, and I hardly say that about any film. more

Not bad at all 5/26/2006

Despite being huge, the AMC Empire 25 never seems as chaotic as the Loews across the street. They also get points for usually having an indie or foreign film on one or two screens next to all the blockbusters. On the downside, if you want your fellow audience members to be silent, don't ever, EVER see a movie here. Plus side? Lots of bathrooms and rarely a line. more

Lots of Screens to Choose From 4/22/2006

The lights of Times Square will lead you here - this section of 42nd Street is still subject to the Neon Lights Required Times Square laws. You can't miss the theater. Although there are 25 screens, there are usually about 10 movies playing here - the bonus is that no matter when you show up, you will probably find a showtime that suits you (if not, there are numerous eating/drinking options on the block to waste time). They keep this theater fairly clean. Some of the theaters are huge (two levels) and some very small (you will hear everything the guy in the front row whispers to his girlfriend). My problems with AMC 25 is less about the theaters and more about the patrons it attracts - 75% of the movies I have been to here have been interrupted by cell phones and loud conversations. Get a clue, folks! If you want to talk, do it at home in front of your TV and not in a movie theater with people paying nearly $11 per show. more

  • The Space
Whoever said movie theaters were getting bigger had no idea of the scale here: AMC Empire boasts 25 screens on 11 floors, with spacious stadium-style seating and massive screens, all conveniently located near Times Square. And check out the great view from the deck--not a common feature in most New York megaplexes.

    The Scene

You'd expect long lines to be a problem, but those nifty automated ticket machines and the bank of box-office windows on the ground floor help keep things moving along for the crowds of tourists and locals. In addition to screening blockbusters and studio fare, AMC has devoted the five theaters on its top floor to popular repertory classics ("Ben Hur," "Lawrence of Arabia," "The Godfather") and more independent films ("Time Code," "The Virgin Suicides"), so audiences vary enormously.
