Best

Amber India serves North Indian food in a tiny, cheap-looking strip mall off of El Camino. If you like Indian food and you live in the South Bay, ...

Worst

Good ambience. Very passable food. Disinterested service -- Pros: Ambience Cons: Simple food. Disinterested Servie.

OverPriced, Awful service, PLZ DONT GO 11/9/2008

I have tried many indian restaurants in bay area.I would say this was the worst experience. It is a noisy place.I ordered a dish (i tried it at many places) which was stale and had some weird taste, smell. On complaining the manager did not agree with us.He did not replaced that dish or did not bother to give us new dish.I think that meat was not fresh.During this drama I noticed that manager was not friendly and had no manners about how to behave with customers.Food was overpriced and with less quantity. more

Good Food, Not so great price 4/17/2006

THis restaurant very conveniently located is definitely a big hit with the masses. But I would rate it just OK, as I don't think the food is that great most of the times. We are frequent visitors to this place. My husband likes the buffet, but the variety for vegetarians isn't that good. The prices are much higher as compared to other similar Indian restaurants. Their non-veggies are good, but just in case you are a vegetarian, you will find better places for a more affordable price. more

Highly overrated 12/18/2005

Amber food is just ok. Great decor. However, the price is way too high. The service is very hit and miss. Last time we were ttthere, the waiter messed up our order big time. more

Ambar India Restaurent 9/26/2005

This is one of my favorite Indian places to eat in bay area. The restaurent is decorated beautifully and the atmosphere is quite pleasing. The lunch buffet is superb and the non vegetarian items are prepared quite well. I especially love the butter chicken here. The mango lassi is excellent as well. They also have hall for private parties. more

Great food with fantastic ambiance 9/16/2005

I just love this place. There food quality, ambiance and service is just awesome. Its slightly expensive restaurant as compared to other Indian restaurants but its worth a try. They have lot of non-veg options. They don't have that many vegetarian dishes to offer. The food is slightly americanized, implying less hot, but its good. more

Very special Indian food 8/16/2005

Amber India is almost always packed, usually with Indian people--a sign it must be teriffic. In addition to the usual suspects (Butter chicken, etc.) they also have dishes that many other Indian restaurants don't. The atmosphere is a cut above, too--understated decor, attentive service. The prices reflect the quality, which makes Amber India more of a treat restaurant than a staple for us, but if you're looking for a really special Indian meal, this is the place. more

Not a place I would recommend 8/10/2005

I would instead say go to the Santana Row l location. The place setting is really nice. The food is ok. The pricing is higher than it needs to be... You are better off going to another palce for AUTHENTIC food or going to the other Amber in San jose for Ambiance. more

tradeoffs between the santana row and mountain view locations 8/8/2005

this won't be my typical restaurant review in that everyone already knows that amber is a great indian restaurant and most people seem to say it's the best in the south bay. after all, it tends to win readers' choice awards year after year after year. it does so justifiably. people in the know say that amber's good, not just people who find indian buffets convenient because they don't know how to order indian food. anyway, in mountain view, two indian restaurants get quite a bit of attention: amber and shiva's. between the two, i pick amber. i think both are good, but i think amber wins by a mile. now, i want to discuss the differences between the santana row and mountain view locations of amber. for a romantic dinner date, go to santana row. for a lunchtime buffet meal, go to mountain view. the decor is awesome at santana row, and i would say the santana row amber possibly wins the award for best restaurant in all of san josé, and that's saying a lot. in the end, i think i'd actually give that award to seven on the alameda, but still... the fact that i'd put amber in santana row at second says a lot about it. it's great. anyway, the buffet at the santana row location lacks and is overpriced, so at lunch, for a casual meal, go to the mountain view location! more

Great buffet. 8/8/2005

This is one of my favorite indian buffet places in mountain view. My first favorite place is Shiva's in castro street, but this is very good too. The butter chicken here is to die for. The naan are excellent. The desserts here are excellent too. I once ate Moon daal halwa here which is a rare item on the buffet menus. The buffet is a little pricey as compared to the other indian buffets in town, but the food quality is better than other places too. The ambiance of the restaurent is pleasing. They can accomodate large reservations better as compared to Shiva's more

Mediocre Buffett 8/4/2005

I have only eaten there during the lunch hours for their buffet so my opinion does not represent their dinner or regular menu. I have been there several times for business lunch meals. Every time has been very inconsistent. My favorite Indian entree is the Chicken Makhani or Butter Chicken. The first time I visited the tandoori was very tender but every time after the chicken meat was way over cooked to the point that the dryness overpowered any spices at all. If you're going for the buffett make sure to avoid the 12:00-1:00 time frame and arrive a little early as there is very limited seating in this location. more
