Good food, they could care less about your Satisfaction 11/23/2011

Probably one of the worst dining experiences in my life! I have dined all over the world in top restaurants, more

generally very good, but had a bad experience 5/23/2011

I generally love Alta and have had many good experiences there, but my last experience was quite bad. My wife and I didn't have reservations so we ate at the bar which we've done many times in the past. While eating our food, which was very good, and working our way through the red wine list my wife ordered the next wine which was a Labrusca. It was served chilled and was sparkling. I called over the bartender and said that this was not what we were expecting since red wines are generally not served chilled and it wasn't on the list of ""sparkling"" wines. He said that's how Labruscas are served with a tone that implied that we were idiots. He impatiently asked me what I wanted him to do and when I told him I'd like to send it back and get a different wine he scoffed at the phrase ""send it back"" and pointed out that he would have to throw it out. He eventually did give us the next wine on the list but with considerable attitude. He then went over to another bartender and audibly made fun of us. Then later to the 3rd bartender, again, loud enough for us to hear him. I was especially bothered because 20 minutes earlier we had heard him warn a woman off a white wine because he said it was heavily oxidized and she may not like it. He gave her a taste and she didn't and chose a different wine. So he clearly knows a bartender should say something if the wine is outside the norm, but chose not to do it for us. more

The best food in the city 7/6/2010

I don't even know where to start... everything at Alta is wonderful! I don't even like brussel sprouts and tried them - they are amazing! The white wine sangria is out of this world! The beef short ribs are amazing, and so is their special dessert. They will do their best to get you in, but its best to make reservations or get there early... Since I first tried it I have been back weekly / monthly... It's a must eat! Pros: everything is good, even things you don't think you'd like Cons: hard to get in more

Great Place. Minute portions 5/14/2010

It's a great place to have drinks and nibble on great food, but if you just go for dinner you may leave hungry. The menu is very well priced. There were two of us. We had 7 plates, 1 dessert and two bottles of sparkling water. The bill came to $102. The same amount of money spent at another restaurant would have left us more satisfied. What put the final nail on the coffin for this place for me is that they only take American Express. Great place, just don't go hungry. Pros: Lively Atmosphere, great food Cons: Tiny portions. Only take AMEX more

Not so Alta (high in spanish) 8/22/2009

They should rename it to ""Bajo"" (low in spanish) I took a date over there and it was one of my worst dates ever. and I have been around the block once or twice. first, you cant carry a decent conversation, the place is crowded and the acoustics are terrible, if you are ok with screaming over your food - go for it, thats your problem, if you look for an intimate conversation, decent space between tables, some kind of magic while you eat with your partner then avoid at all cost. the food was ok, I wasnt blown away but again, I could not really enjoy it in that setting. it was very hot over there and took a while untill the AC was turned on- I am speaking about august in new york city. seriously, I am pretty open minded person and easy to satisfy and not a new comer to the city - do yourself a favor and stay away, unless you like the vulgar scene. Pros: Price Cons: Very noisy, bad service, rude bartender, over crowded more

Wonderful West Village experience 7/29/2009

I love going here. Taking out of town friends through the kitchen to the dining room that faces 10th Street is always fun. Hanging and having nibbles at the bar is a perfect mid-week hang, too. And in winter, you can't beat fireplace-side seating. Pros: Great wine and food, beautiful and fun vibe more

Beautiful place, amazing food 7/3/2009

This place is gorgeous - it makes you feel like you've stepped out of NYC and into a beautiful home somewhere in Spain. The food is amazing and the menu offers almost anything you can think of! Pros: Best cheese! more

Comfortable but unfriendly 4/7/2009

The food is good but it is served way too fast. I felt like I was in a competitive eating contest. For the price, I wish the waitress had advised us on this because it's a lot of money to feel rushed through a meal. If you go, order in stages. The waitresses were pleasant but seemed disinterested in us, even though it was a Monday and the restaurant wasn't crowded. But it is a beautiful room and good for a group. Pros: Decor Cons: Service more

Incredibly Rude Bartender. 12/29/2008

About a month ago I went down to Alta on a Tuesday night and the bartender was so snotty to us. He treated us like idiots when we asked too many questions and rolled his eyes a few times. Worse yet there was another bartender, a young nice kid and the nasty one treated him like dirt... even said ""get outta my way"" when walking by him. When the young guy stood up for himself the nasty one started demeaning him. I felt bad for him. I didn't think too much of it after but then we came back again last Tuesday to find the same nasty bartender being even nastier to us. He took forever to get to us and the bar wasn't too packed. When he finally came over he just seemed like he had somewhere else to be. At the end he just slapped the bill down in front of us and walked away.....the food is great but steer clear of the short bald bartender !!! Pros: Food Cons: Bad Service more

Just Brilliant!!! 11/24/2008

Best tapas restaurant in the city.... the food is actually what you find in the streets of Spain. Pros: The food!!! more

if restaurant staff starts shouting at you for overstaying your time.... 11/18/2008

while the food is great (stil great after coming here a few times), quality of service has drastically deteriorated, enough for me to say I am not coming back. i was so happy my birthday party mood didnt get affected by it, but dont think I need that experience ever again. more

Great Decor - great service 10/20/2008

I took a date there the other night (Saturday) and it was great...its very small looking from the outside but once you get in its a beautiful restaurant. We were seated upstairs in a very rustic looking room overlooking the main floor. The food was great and the Sangria is awesome. I just got home from Madrid a few weeks ago and had gotten into the Tapas thing. Our waiter was very knowledgeable, recommended some great dishes and was very attentive. The food came quickly (get the summer salad) and the ambience just helped to spawn conversation. All in all a positive experience...these other reviewers, not too sure what they went through but I could not disagree with them more. Pros: Ambience, Food, Sangria Cons: Portions are kinda small and a bit pricey more

Amazing service 10/14/2008

I made a reservation for 10 people here on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately, and knew right off the bat we wanted the best value so we ordered ""The Whole Shebang"" (the entire menu). They failed to bring out a couple of dishes, and duplicated a couple of others, but when we voiced (nicely) that certain plates were missing, the manager gave us all a free round of shots! She also knocked some drinks off our tab. more

Fun Times! 10/7/2008

I went there for a friend's birthday party and it was a lot of fun! The rustic decor and the romantic ambience gave us a warm, cozy feeling inside. Our waiter was very knowledgable and helpful and very prompt with our orders. As alcoholics and wine connoiseurs we appreciated the lovely wine and cocktail list. The sangrias are a must! The tapas were delicious! We had almost everything on the menu because we were a big group. The portions were a bit small, but I think it was enough for everyone. My favorite dishes were the fried goatcheese and pintos of foie gras terrine and strawberries! I would definitely go back. Pros: Great Place For Groups or Couples Cons: Not Cheap more

Food is delicious, atmosphere is nice.... Dinner was great until we saw 2 m..e running back and forth in the restaurant (upstairs)!! It was horrible, specially when those guys are my phobia!!! Manager came, saw them and then apologize... but still.....I would love to go back but i'm scaaaaaared!!!! more

Great place for foodies 6/21/2008

The food and atmosphere was the best. What a nice surprise for a spot in the village. This is a place for foodies and people with a diverse palette. It's tasty and filling. You must try the Sangria! Pros: Location, Ambience, Sangria Cons: Limited options for vegetarians more

Worth Trying Once 5/7/2008

Food was tasty, but not overly unique. Good wine selection by the glass and interesting cocktails. The place is gorgeous - really unique for that area. Major downside was that it seemed as though the staff could care less about serving its guests. Food came out way to quickly - certain dishes within a minute of being ordered. Try it once, good for dates. Pros: Space Cons: Service more
