Editorial review from Citysearch 10/5/2013

My dad was at Alpine Fireside nursing home for 2 weeks in the summer of 2012 because he needed to be on an IV antibiotic. We were there 3-4 times a day and begged them to turn him since he has Parkinson's and couldn't turn or move on his own in his condition at the time. From our very numerous observations he was hardly ever turned and they even refused to have any record of when he was last turned available to us in his room. They would not even provide a pillow to be used to keep him turned when we turned him ourselves. After 2 weeks he had a stage 3 bed sore which was his first ever, a pulmonary embolism(blood clot to the lungs) and pneumonia from aspirating(breathing the food/water into his lungs). When we picked him up his mouth was full of pudding while he was lying flat in bed even though the staff knew that he had aspiration/swallowing issues as many Parkinson's patients do. We took him straight to the hospital where these things were immediately discovered and he almost died. The nurse asked us immediately if he had come there from a nursing home. We met with the administration of Alpine Fireside later to try to prevent this from happening to anyone else and they denied that any of this had happened there and said that these things must have occurred between there and the hospital, which was only 15 minutes away. This is why I feel it necessary to provide this review, so that people can make informed decisions concerning the care of their loved ones. My dad has never been the same since and is completely disabled now. He will never go to another nursing home. He is living with us and we will always be his caregivers. I would not recommend this nursing home to anyone. more

Family taking care of family.

Owner Message
  • At Alpine Fireside, we care about your family member like he is our own family member. This has been the ground philosophy in place since the beginning, and the managers and staff have taken on this value as their own as they treat each resident like their own mom or dad. This philosophy is seen in our motto, "Family Taking Care of Family."

Alpine Fireside is a family-owned and family-run business, built in 1972 by Johannes ksnevad. Both the founder and his wife Gunlaug have resided at Alpine Fireside, and his son Gordon is the current administrator. Gordon runs the home and makes the decisions from his on-site office, unlike many nursing homes that have their decisions made for them from large out-of-state corporations.

Alpine Fireside, rated a 5-star nursing home in 2003 by the Rockford Register Star, has a small family feel about it, from the nursing staff that steps above and beyond the call of duty to make each resident comfortable, to the warm and cozy feel of the central fireplace that is the centerpiece of the lobby.

Whether you are looking for a place to stay for a short time as you recover from the hospital in rehabilitation or you are looking for a long-term home for your family member to live at, Alpine Fireside has a spot in our family just for you!
