LAME 1/23/2009

I don't know what kind of standards the other reviewers on this site have, but Alfa is pretty lame. Granted it isn't a stuffy, superficial Rittenhouse bar, the decor is tacky and their sound system is awful. It's basically just a space that a bunch of people in their late 20s-mid 30s go drink. Oh, and lots of cougars hang out there too. If you don't care about atmosphere, you have zero interest in hearing music at a bar, and like being picked up by old women with Jersey accents, then you will love Alfa. Pros: it serves alcohol, isn't a stuffy Rittenhouse bar Cons: cougars, bad sound system, cheesy gig posters on the walls, lame more

great food, good service, intriguing atmosphere 9/21/2008

Went there on restaurant week 2008 with a group, mainly because it was the first place we called at the last minute that still had a reservation available (well over 24 hours prior to the reservation time...). So, it was a bit of a shot in the dark. Very low key entrance, easy to miss, but once you get inside the atmosphere is great. They make a relatively small interior space seem large by utilizing large open areas. We had the four course restaurant week dinner (I had the duck appetizer and a main course of the braised pork chop). It was absolutely amazing, especially for a grand total of $35 per person, plus drinks, which were the $5 happy hour cocktails, and were great in and of themselves. The pork chop I had was very easily the best I've ever had in my life, not overcooked, amazingly tender, with a glaze that was only very slightly sweet. It certainly seemed like a meal that would cost much more than $35. But, according to their regular menu, the same thing (or similar) would normally not be much more than that. The clientele seemed to be pretty wide ranging, but that of course is not necessarily a good normal cross section considering the fact that it was restaurant week. Pros: Great food, friendly staff, awesome bar menu Cons: Parking (but SEPTA's new late night train service on weekends helps alleviate this, only a short walk from Suburban Station) more

Horrible Service!!!!! 8/9/2008

I had high hopes, the ambience was very nice, and the menu looked great! But beyond that, my hopes were dashed. our appetizers didn't arrive for 30 MINUTES and they were cold. No one took our drink orders while we were sitting, so we trapsed back and forth to the bar ourselves for water and wine. When the entrees arrived, there were substitutions that we were not told about when ordering. No apology, just attitude from the waitstaff. The place turns into something of a dance club once it gets late, we had people bumping into our backs while we were trying to finish our cold apps and crappy entrees. I will not be returning, and advise others to spend their money on an establishment with a shred of management self-respect. My advice fire the GM, FOH manager and Shoot the Chef!!! Cons: bad food and service more

Very nice atmosphere 8/5/2008

Just the type place to go after a nice show for drinks or for a nightcap after a date. I will say that as nice as the place was, the food left a little to be desired. Won't stop me from going back, but nice establishments that offer the whole package shouldn't be overcooking wings or serving bland, boring quesadillas. I'm a fair enough person, that I won't damn an establishment off of one experience, especially since the waiter was a pretty nice guy, and seemed genuinely interested in me and wife's satisfaction level, but I would hesitate to choose Alfa if I'm looking for the full experience of good drinks AND good grub. (as we were that night) Pros: Nice looking place. Mood was perfect. Cons: Restrooms were a bit untidy. more

Just agreeing with everyone else! 6/7/2008

I just had to write a review, because I Agree with Hotflygirl that just posted 6/7. We stopped in on Friday night on a friend's recommendation... Just fabulous place. I made reservation for a table for 10 of us.... We ended up being more like 15; they were great accommodating us. The hostess was really terrific and hot. They made more space for us in the lounge. The atmosphere was simply great. The crowd of interesting, good looking girls provided a pleasant backdrop to our group. The food was perfect, especially the mini sliders were fantastic. The specialty drinks are amazing, be careful though they are deceptively strong. Amazing Mojitos (my personal favorite). DJ was spinning some seriously fun music. We are going to become regulars. Our waitress had a slightly diva-like attitude, but she kept the drinks coming. No Complaints. You should check it out, we had a blast!!! more

Perfect Place for my Birthday 6/7/2008

Last night 3 friends took me to ALFA for my birthday and the evening couldn't have been better! From the decor, drink menu, great booth for a group of 4, friendly & helpful staff, to the amazing food. We all drank, ate and laughed and will definitely be back again! The recommendation of the Caribbean Duck on special was perfect as well as the rest of the one had a single complaint! more

Visiting Philly? Go to Alfa Restaurant & Bar! 4/17/2008

Went to happy hour with my coworkers while we were visiting Philly. I suggested Alfa because I came in about a month ago and I liked the low key atmosphere with reasonably priced drinks and unbelievably awesome food! -- this was just what we were looking for! But best of all the bartender, Eric. He was so friendly and remembered my name (I mean, doesn't everybody wanna go to a bar where everyone knows your name??)! Definitely go here! more

29th Birthday Dinner Party @ Alfa 4/5/2008

Last night (4/4) I threw my 29th Birthday dinner party @ Alfa and my god - not one complaint from any my guests! Every single person left saying they had a great time. I loved it, I've eaten at Alfa a couple times last month, so I know the food is amazing. But several times I got the impression that the servers don't know much about food, for example I ask about a menu item and totally get some off the wall description. That really doesn't matter the kitchen staff @ ALFA knocks it right out of the park, into Jersey! I highly recommend this place for any party, it's crowded, but their bar staff are incredibly fast and really nice. Good Food, Good Atmosphere, and Good Drinks. more

Fun Place!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3/31/2008

I am generally not a Rittenhouse scene type of personality,.but this place is not what I expected at all. ALFA is totally down to earth! The staff is totally unpretentious, the service is above average, the food is AMAZING, Happy Hour is awesome, and furthermore the customers seem pretty cool too. more

Great Happy Hour Drinks 3/28/2008

Finally, someone got it Right. 3/19/2008

I had my B-day dinner/party at Alfa this past Friday night. The food was unbelievable. After we ate we moved the party into the lounge and had a blast. The music was really good We tried several of the bartenders special shots also amazing. I have looked for an unpretentious, friendly place for some time now and have finally found it. I cannot thank Alfa enough for making my birthday a truly special evening. more

GREAT HOT SPOT!!!!!! 3/11/2008

I went to Alfa Bar over the weekend with friends from college that I haven't seen in years and had the best time ever. The atmosphere was hot (hottest girls ever) with a great lounge feel. We had drinks and some appetizers and ate dinner. Nothing is really better than a room full of beautiful women but the food at Alfa was totally awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The bartenders were really friendly and attentive which is sometimes hard to find in such a busy place. Overall we had a great time. I would definitely go back to Alfa Bar again for the great music and atmosphere. Worth a night out on the town!!! more

Best Affordable Restaurant and Bar 1/14/2008

One Word WOW!!!! The name Alfa makes you think of some upscale, stuffy, uptight bar that only the elite of Rittenhouse could afford, thats far from the truth. The servers are hip, young and edgy, the bartenders are some of the best I have ever seen. The drinks and amazing and strong. The food, is fantastic, recently my friends I had the pleasure of dinning at Alfa we started our night by having a traditional Swiss Fondue it left us speechless, I told my girls that I haven't a real fondue since moving here from Madrid and this was it. The fried goat cheese is also to die for! As for our dinner, again we were surprised!!!, Stuffed Chicken Breast, Hazelnut Crusted Salmon, petite Bacon Wrapped Steaks, it felt like were at a 5 star restaurant, with none of the white table cloth pressures of being formal, we had FUN! As for dessert we couldn't have ask for anything better rum-spiked pumpkin cheese cake and chocolate cake were absolutely perfect. We asked our sever about the chef, surprisingly we learned that Alfa's knew young chef is from Boston, and he was pointed out to us across the restaurant, he was introducing himself and shaking hands with other tables (cute). To the owners and management of Alfa one word! Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want to go to a place for friends and fun with great affordable food and drinks Alfa Restaurant and Bar. Just okay 7/3/2007

I went to Alfa for a summertime happy hour with some friends from work. The decor is supposed to be ""stylish"" and it looks like it came from a West Elm catalog. That, to me, is kind of boring, easy, and not at all unique or interesting. When we showed up at 5pm on a Wednesday, it was empty, but by 5:45, it was overly packed. Our waiter never had time to say a word to us or adequately hear our order. (not his fault, it was packed). The bar area spread to overwhelm the tables where we were sitting, which was annoying and other customers asked if they could order thru our waiter because the bar was so slow. Finally, the drink specials included a caipirinha (national drink of brazil) and a mango margharita. Not sure what to try, we asked the waiter for a recommendation (around 5 when it was still empty) and he chose the caipirinha. It was not good, and did not taste like other caipirinhas I have had. There were two great highlights to the night thought - the proximity to rittenhouse park is perfect - a half block away and on the stretch of Walnut with all of the stores. And, the tater tots, which were on the appetizer menu were a super and tasty blast from the past. Pros: Great appetizers, Close proximity to Rittenhouse Cons: Too packed at happy hours, Overworked service staff, Bad mixed drinks more

Fun, lai d back alternative to rittenhouse elitism 10/21/2006

This is the first review I've written here- I felt compelled to after reading the incredibly snobby bashing of Alfa by another member. A friend and I ""stumbled"" (not in the drunken way, thanks) upon Alfa last Saturday night. We were looking for a light meal, good drinks, and reasonable prices in a casual chic setting. Alfa was almost perfect. It did not suffer from the tacky pretension so frequent in the area, nor did it play the ""look how expensive we can make OUR menu!"" game. The cocktail I chose is called a Persian, which has the flavour of spiced apple. It was absolutely delicious, generously sized, and reasonably priced at $8. We ordered the Mediterranean plate and calamari to share. The Med plate was exactly as expected, and very good. The calamari was served with a tasty salsa, but was unfortunately slightly overcooked, and therefore rubbery. This was the only disappointment of the night, as service was great as well. Since we didn't try much the menu had to offer, I'm certainly willing to give it another chance. So if you don't have the fortitude to go to Rouge EVERY night, Alfa is a great alternative. Pros: good, creative drinks; reasonable prices; nice ambiance Cons: overcooked calamari more

GREAT NEW DINING SPOT IN RITTENHOUSE, without the Rittenhouse pretenses. 9/26/2006

I tried Alfa a few times and I have to say each time was better than the before. The menu changed dramatically while the favorites we had come to enjoy (Baja Tacos, Chicken Beta) remained. The space is hip and cool with a great vibe and good music. What else would you expect from the owners of the Walnut Room. Which makes this the perfect place to dine early on some great dishes like spicy black mussels, mini beef sliders (awesome!) and a lobster club sandwhich that I can't stop thinking about. Then head upstairs to the Walnut Room to dance off all the extra calories from the decadent crab mac and cheese tots. I've also popped in for happy hour which has unbelievable drink specials and it's never to crowded you have to wait for a seat. Pros: Great food, reasonably priced, in Ritttenhouse more

Terrible service 9/1/2006

Don't waste your time. Terrible service. The male bartender that worked the Friday night I was there was too busy talking to serve. more
