I'm a french student who planed to study in USA, then I decided to move in NY to study TOEFL. The thing is when you looking for some English school by internet you find ALCC NY with ''on going'' classes. I decided to apply there to get a F1 visa asap.
Before starting the TOEFL class, you have to choose by internet which class you want to take : Master conversation, master writting etc... and you pay.
For me it was about $2300.00 (18 hours for F1 visa), Then take a test in ALCC and if you are qualify you get the TOEFL class.
After finishing all in France I came in NY to take their TOEFL test ( which wasn't in a computer, just a writing test ). For some ridiculous reasons, I took the writing test 3 times.
You have to know that if you are not qualify for the TOEFL they make you pay for class in order to increase your level. The point is from a Business point of view, it's easier for them to say that you are not qualify, so they can earn profit. (Increasing level Class + TOEFL if you are admitted the 2nd time you ask ). But I insisted and finally get the TOEFL preparation.
So to sum up, I came from France on October 27th to start the preparation the 16th November.
Then arrives November 16th. I came to Alcc and learnt that the TOEFL class was canceled and postpone to December 7th. ( 3 weeks, who pay my rent ? ) Of course they forgot to call and mail me.
What the school did ? In order to keep my F1 visas and appease me they put me into a conversation class and a writing class for 3 weeks.
So I took the oportunity to looking for a new apartment, also for some college to apply. So I skip some writing class because I tough that I would be transferring in TOEFL soon.
December 7th, sorry the TOEFL class is postpone to the 14th December for sure.
1 month late... So I tried to change school and now they blackmailing me with my F1 visa. I quit ALCC, no more F1 or I stay until February then I could transfer in another school.
We are now 12/10/09 I'm in an impasse and I don't know what to do...
By the way I have about $527.00 credits ( means that I paid and can use to take another classes ) and they don't want to refund me.
I hope my review will help you to find the school that will fit you the most.
Pros: Alcc, a serious school ?? From my point of view, nope.
Cons: They are more worried about your wallet than you.
