Afi Silver Theatre

Located in the heart of Downtown Silver Spring, the AFI Silver theater is just the place to go if you want to get away from the huge multiplex factory movie theaters that have seemed to have taken over. It is an old 30s movie theater that has been restored and renovated to showcase some of the less conventional films of today and yesterday. They not only show new independent movies but they have film festivals showing the works of directors ranging from Spielberg to Hitchcock to Jarmusch. They show foreign films that you won't see anywhere else and they have a wonderful documentary film festival every year. The theaters and lobby are always immaculately clean and the staff is welcoming and friendly. Movies cost about the same as at the megaplexes, maybe a little less, and if you become a member or contributor you get perks like special invitations and discount on movies. more

AFI has a large selection of movies playing. they have a wonderful snack bar and it is in the heart of the newly rebuilt downtown silver spring. i would definately go back to see a documentary as most of the movies that they have playing are documentaries and not big hollywood movies. they also have old movies playing. more

AFI is a great movie theatre to visit when you need a break from the local megaplex. It's also the theatre to go for the movie you've been waiting to see on the big screen and the megaplex just won't do it (too old, too controversial, too artsy). The individual theatres are just the right size: not so huge that you can't even see the front row, but big enough to fit a great-size screen. There is a bit of a bygone era feeling at AFI: the colors of the interior, the staff, and the movie selections. more

If you want to revisit a theatre and see a classic film on the big screen then you must visit AFI silver theatre. The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center is a state-of-the-art restoration of John Eberson's historic 1938 Silver Theatre. Take a walk back in time to experience the cinema as it should be - a cultural experience with not so many wild teenagers, there all found a block down at the regular 12 screen movie theatre. more
