Bridal Gown Alterations 1/14/2010

I took my bridal gown to Ace to have the entire dress to basically custom fit my body. They did a fabulous job of taking measurements and when I came back for each fitting the alterations had been done perfectly. Thank you, Ace, for making my gown alterations a worry-free process! Pros: Very attentive to detail more

Good Tailor 9/4/2009

I've been a satisfied customer of Ace Tailors for years. I don't normally have anything other than a simple hem altered or easy repair made and I've always been happy. They altered a bridesmaid dress for me once and it turned out just fine, as well. I take more expensive / complex alterations to my personal tailor and it usually involves a series of visits to get the fit right -- this common sense. As far as customer service goes, the ladies are friendly but aren't the gushy type so don't sit around waiting for them to ask you a thousand times 'can I help you'! more

I agree with the rest of the negative posts 7/1/2009

This place used to be good. But the last time that I came to have a pair of $150 pants hemmed they were in such a rush that they only put in ONE hem pin. My concern was legitimate since they ended up cutting them too short. Meanwhile, they charged me $28 for the favor. I won't go back. Cons: Overpriced, careless work more

only if you have money to throw away 3/21/2009

I came in to fix a small (half inch) hole on the seam of a sweater (it had unraveled). Last year, I had a similar situation (same brand of sweater, same type and size of hole), and I came to Ace; they fixed in on the spot for $3.50. This time, they said it would cost $9.50!!! When I asked how it could possibly be so expensive, they told me that even putting thread on a spool is work that justifies that price (!!!). Then they said they'd added on an ""express"" cost. My choice was either to pay this exorbitant price to get it done then, or to pay the only slightly cheaper ($8.00) price to pick it up a week later (a week! for a hole!!). Also, lately I've taken a few skirts in that needed to have the waist taken in. Out of three skirts, they said they couldn't do two -- they said they don't have the right kind of machines (who does, then?!). The third skirt ended up costing $40 to take in (I have no idea why -- it was a simple, unlined cotton skirt)! That's almost the price of the skirt. This is typical at Ace -- they just keep getting more and more expensive. I'm through paying for their high-rent location. Pros: decent work Cons: wildly overpriced more

Expensive and Mediocre. 2/26/2009

I had a pair of pants taken in there a while back. She said she couldn?t take them in as much as they needed because of the pockets. That may be true, but when I got them back, she hadn?t taken any fabric out of the seat, leaving them baggy in the stride. There aren?t any pockets there. They don?t fall off now, but they look just awful. And they charged $29 for it! The seams also split a few weeks later. I see other reviews complaining about their work coming out, so I assume because they use poor quality thread. Pros: It's close to down town Cons: Poor work quality more

Not good - careless with your time and your items 1/30/2009

This was the worst tailor I had so far. I had to tell them how to correctly measure me for doing a hem for a pair of pants. Then a week later (after the pants were supposed to be ready) I got a call - they ""just"" realized they couldn't do the hem properly because of the lycra material. I had again to suggest them how to do it. Remind you, this was only a hem, i.e. not high difficulty alteration. more

Do not go here 11/29/2008

I have had nothing but horrendous experiences with Ace tailors on 12th and Lamar. My garments have almost never been ready on time and alterations they have done - simple things, like hem pants - have come undone immediately. Due to referrals, I tried to like Ace but this place is overpriced and just awful. Pros: near downtown Cons: overpriced, poor quality of work, not delivered on time more

Horrible customer service, lousy work, overpriced 6/13/2008

I have used Ace Tailors several times, mostly because it was convenient and I didn't know where else to go. I have experienced many of the same problems as other reviewers. They take forever to finish jobs (I think because they agree to take on too much, then underestimate the time to return items), and last time I went they could not seem to locate my item. They put me on hold forever, then said they would call me back and never did. Their prices are also ridiculous. Last time I went, they charged me $20 to hem a pair of pants. Pants that weren't even lined!! There was nothing different or unique about these pants for them to charge $20. And as though it's not already obvious, their customer ""service"" is horrible. They don't seem to care whether they do a good job or have your alterations done when they say they will, which is important if you need the alterations done for something like an interview or event. You just can't rely on them to have them completed by the time they say they will. And even then, you may get your item back and still need additional alterations because the work is so bad. STAY AWAY!! Pros: what pros? Cons: lousy customer service, lousy work, lousy prices more

Don't seem to know how to tailor clothes, return clothes almost exactly as you brought them in 3/26/2008

I have been to Ace Tailors several times after recommendations from friends and have made a resolution to find a new tailor! First problem: They very rarely agree to tailor my clothes. Of the four dresses I have asked them to take in, they have done 2 (and very poorly). After trying them on and pointing out that I needed the sides taken in, they told me it would be too hard to do and wouldn't really be possible! One dress was an expensive, straight fitting shift dress that was just too big. (I wear a 2-4) They told me they couldn't take it in b/c it didn't have side pleats (it had pleats at the bust only), and I thought ""You're a tailor! Put in pleats!"" I guess they don't know how? Another dress had an empire waist, I wanted it taken in along the side seems below the empire waist, and they claimed they couldn't without messing up the dress. Another dress had an asymetrical hem that I wanted taken in to be a straight hem. They said they couldn't do that b/c it was top-stitched. If ever they agree to tailor any of my clothes, they do nothing more than I could've done myself w/ a sewing machine and send the clothes back to me looking almost identical to how I bought them. Pros: good location Cons: terrible service, lack of know-how more

great customer service 1/2/2008

I've been going to Ace Tailors (mainly the Downtown location) for years and have always had great service; Josie and other staff members are extremely friendly. The turnaround time on my clothes has been very reasonable. Pros: fast turnaround time, great customer service more

Worst tailor in Austin (maybe the world) 12/23/2007

Came here on a recommendation from an acquaintance after first moving to Austin. I wouldn't even trust them to hem pants after my experience. They nearly ruined a $2000 Dolce & Gabbana suit that I needed altered. I had to have a new tailor reconstruct it--Ace left it with four less buttons, incorrectly fitted in both jacket and pants, and an actual rip in the inseam. I would never go back, even to have jeans hemmed. After talking with friends, I've discovered this type of service is common at Ace's. Cons: will ruin clothes, no respect for customers wishes, unwilling to fix mistakes more

the most Considerate service 9/18/2007

I brought three different pairs of jeans in to this location, plopped them on the counter, and begged for help. One was hemmed horribly by another tailor; one was brand new and 7"" too long; one I had worn a huge hole right through the butt. Not a problem for the folks at Ace. They fixed the horrible job done on the first, put a great ""original hem"" on the new jeans, and patched the hole on the third -- which I did not even know was an option! Pros: considerate, professional, skillful more

Ace for alterations 8/9/2007

I have used Ace Tailors for a bridesmaid dress alteration and a fancy jean hem. I have had great results from the 12th and Lamar Ace location. The staff is friendly and the work has always been completed in a timely fashion. Pros: central location, friendly staff Cons: don't always call when work is completed more

Shanky 7/19/2007

They kind of ruined the look of a very cute jumper....they passed me off by saying they thought it looked really cute. one pant is bigger than the other. i could have done what they did. it cost me quite a bit and i was pretty unsatisfied. the worst was telling me it would be done a week after i dropped it off, and then telling me they didn;t get to it, on monday. then on tuesday when i called they said they would call back and no call, finally on wednesday they said it was ready the day irritating!!!!! more

Not Worth It. 8/29/2003

I gave them 3 days to do a simple hem. I realized too late on the day I asked for it that they had not called. The next day I called, they said they had it done...and then they said they didn't. They seemed disinterested that they had not finished my hem and didn't even seem to be able to locate my item. The girl handling my call was very confused (but not apologetic) and it took 5 minutes for me to find out what was going on. They managed to get it done that day after I argued with them. When I picked it up, it was $18! For a 1/2 inch hem, completed a day late?!? Never again! Cons: bad service, over-priced more

SUCKS for easy work; Ok for tricky 5/5/2003

I started using Ace when I had some serious alteration needs, i.e., taking in dresses and jackets. They do great on that stuff, but then I started taking them simple hem jobs. I've taken my own dresses, skirts, and pants, and my husband's dress pants and khaki's. At last count, something like 9 out of 13 hems have fallen out!! And for this I paid $12 or $15 a hem?! NEVER AGAIN! Pros: good for complicated Cons: all hems fall out!!, expensive more
