Incompetence from the top down. 10/30/2017

My wife visited this store to purchase a replacement concealed carry holster for me so we could visit the State Fair of Texas. She decided to only carry my 3-month-old son in her Bjorn baby carrier instead of getting the whole stroller out for a quick trip. She went inside, visited the restroom, then went to the gun department and asked for assistance to find the holster I needed. After, she went straight to the register and checked out with the item using her credit card... She went straight out of the exit and to her car. When she had taken the baby out of the carrier to put him in the car seat she heard a grunt and an "excuse me" from behind her. Completely startled and scared, she turned around to have a large man, less than 2 feet away from her tell her, "I need your bag to search for evidence of stolen items." Mind you this is in the parking lot and not within the legal bounds of the store... My wife, scared for the safety of our son and herself didn't even ask him to identify himself because she figured if he was going to rob her he would just take the bag and run. He shuffled through her bag then told her "we've had lots of thefts" before turning to walk back inside the store; no identification and no apology. She immediately called me panicking and not even able to process what just happened to her. I immediately called the store and was told by the manager on duty that, "none of my employees would do this and I'm sorry you had an experience like this. Probably just a bum or something.. We've had problems with that in this area." I demanded a call back on Monday (as it was Saturday and I figured the people who could actually take action were off for the weekend), but when that never happened I went for a personal visit on Tuesday. At this point I met with a different manager who proceeded to show me the security videos claiming the whole time is wasn't their employee. I left feeling as though something didn't sit right because he only showed me interior video which clearly shows she did nothing that ... more

Worst store experience I've ever had!!!! 6/6/2012

TERRIBLE! When I left the store, I wanted to run over a few carts! We had been calling into Academy for WEEKS now wondering if they will ever get a certain grill into the store. After being told it would come Friday, and it not coming. And then being told it would come Monday and it not coming. And then being told it would come Wednesday, it finally arrived at the store. That was a nightmare to begin with. During those calls, my husband would get put on hold by some guy, wait for 10 minutes and the same guy would pick up and say "hello?" "yes, can you please tell me about that grill?" "oh yeah, one second..." on hold again..."hello?" Many of the calls went something like that. Then it finally came and I went to checkout and I had an AMEX gift cheque for $100. I filled it out and after signing it and writing it out to Academy, the customer service cashier said "Oh, we can't take those." What do you mean?!?!?!? I already wrote it out to you guys!!!! Eventually I just had to pay for it with my debit card. And now have a $100 check written out to them that I can't use. If another vendor doesn't take my scribbled out check, I'm going back and demanding some recompense! Don't waste your time, unless you have to like we did for that stinkin' grill. Wish I could give them 0 stars instead of 1... more

Go Rangers 10/28/2010

I went there to buy a rangers shirt for the playoffs. It was packed with people looking for Rangers gear. There was even a news crew there talking about the festivities. Even with all of that and all of the people, the store did a good job keeping up with everything and even though I had to wait for a little bit in order to purchase my shirt, the line moved well and I was impressed with their abaility to keep up with the demand. Go Rangers! more

This store is a good alternative to stores like Oshmans or Sport Authority. The store is pretty big, and they have equipment for everything from racquetball to hunting. They also have a large selection of apparel and footwear as well. The one thing I don't like about Academy is their selection in brands. Some of these brands I have never even heard of. I think they would be able to get more people in their stores if they sold some higher end products and brands. At least everything is affordable for everyone I guess. Another thing is the organization/cleanliness of the store. I'm not sure what some of the employees are doing, but I often find myself walking down aisles and products are off the racks/shalves and on the floor. They need to spend a little more time keep the store from looking so disheveled. I don't enjoy having to sift through a pile in order to find what I want. more
