Ate there last night with a group of old friends. Haven't been to L.A. for awhile and it was nice to be back in the city. Loved the small plate concept, had a few things I'd only ...

Tasty Wine and Cheese 8/25/2006

Bit pricey for small dishes but definitely sit at the bar for the wine and cheese. Ambience is cool. Dress to impress. In good area to walk around to get your next drink. more

Wine and cheese for the best 8/24/2006

We love this place. It's probably our favorite in LA and we've visited most of the foodie world's top joints. There, however, things to order and things to skip. Bacon wrapped dates are a must. Chicken liver crostini - another must. Coq au Vin - fantastic. Duck fat potatoes. Cheeses are usually very good, as is the wine list. Skirt steak didn't hold up for us. Mushrooms are average. Quail with foie gras should have been better. Charcuterie could be skipped. Still - everything on the menu is sure to be tasty and worth the price. more

Tasty Tapas 8/22/2006

I went to AOC for the first time last night - The atmosphere was lovely (I sat at the cheese bar), the service was just ok (pretty slow and not overly warm & friendly), and the food was tasty. An impressive and extensive selection of wines accompany the dishes very nicely. We started our meal off with the bacon-wrapped dates, which were just fantastic, but be warned they are hot and take a while to cool down! The cheese course (estrella I think, it was a blue cheese) was next and it was nice as well, although some bread or apples slices would have been nice with it (it came with a single fig & walnut). Next, we had the salamis, of which the nostrano stood out. The lamb ragout was outstanding - very flavorful with great textures, and the ricotta gnocchi was the perfect accompaniment. The roasted squash with almond pesto had potential, but it lacked flavor (even some salt would have improved it). Pros: Cheese Bar Cons: Pricey, Slow Service more

Love AOC...Don't Love The Parking 8/17/2006

I'm not going to bore you with another AWESOME review for theis AWESOME, YUMMY, SOPHISTICATED HIP-TO-BE-SCENE wine bar. 'Cuz it is simply the best L.A. has to offer PERIOD. Pros: like your own secret little wine room Cons: lame parking more

Want to give it a 10, but can only go 7.5 7/8/2006

This spot is great, but a few people ruin the overall experience. The host staff and the server. Aside from this, the food is great, the bartenders and support staff are great and the room is great. The unique fare that AOC offers is refreshing and one which doesn't over-feed you like so many restaurants do these days. The prices are fair and the wine selections are wonderful. Back to the good staff - they are knowledgeable, helpful and make you feel at ease if you do not have a great knowledge in wine and cheese. It was just a bummer that the hostess was such a witch because there was a decent wait, in which we had to hang near her for a while - she felt like she was doing us a favor or that she was the Queen of England and we were Serfs. The server acted like she wanted to be somewhere else - like in acting school possibly. News flash - don't quit your day job because you couldn't act nice or knowledgeable. We'll be back despite the two lame staff members... that's why the tip is up to us, the guest - right? Pros: Wine & Cheese Selection Cons: Some of the staff & Parking more

I never knew that dates could taste this good! 7/6/2006

First visit to AOC last night, and I can't believe we waited so long to try it out. Our server (Nicky) couldn't have been more helpful for us first-timers, and recommended we tried the ""signature"" dates wrapped in bacon while we got to grips with the menu choices and the wine list. The dates were awesome, as were the rest of our choices (arroz negro, lamb, cheese selection). Only the chorizo charcuterie seemed to be missing something. Hard to say anything that's not been said before, but the wine-by-the-glass selection is fantastic. Our only gripe was that the noise level gets uncomfortable as the evening goes on, but some people love that kind of atmosphere, so it's a personal thing. We'll probably eat earlier next time to miss the high-octane decibels, but we'll be back, often I hope. Pros: Wines by the glass, delicious small plates Cons: Noisy later in the evening more

food:7 service: 10 6/18/2006

wow..u really need to look for this place to find it. this place is small but nice. excellent customer service. our waiter was really sophisticated. menu was a lil hard for me to understand. i found out i wasnt the only one. i overheard other tables asking their servers about the menu. yes u can hear your neighbors conversation. expect to spend approx. 3hrs to finish your dinner. service is really slow. so slow that i was so hungry i had 3 baskets of bread. food is above avg. i would give 7 out of 10. expect to spend approx $200 for dinner for two. Pros: good service, good ambiance Cons: pricey more

Good not Great 5/30/2006

if this is the one of the best restaurants LA has to offer then we have a long way to go. The tapas were good but not great. I felt a lot of the food was over salted. Nothing reached our and grabbed me as a truly signature dish that I had to come back for. The wine list was good value and I like the half carafe deal, which gave you some variety of choice. The staff was friendly and helpful even though they were very crowded for a Tuesday night. Not many highend LA restaurants are able to even reach this level of orignality and competency without going the easy ""steak"" way out which says alot to me at least about the state of affairs of the LA food scene. Pros: service, value, food more

Great food without spending too much money 5/21/2006

My friends and I were extremely pleased with the food at AOC. Although I don't recommend this restaurant for a group of hungry men bc the tapas are quite small, the food is delicious, especially their desserts. While our waitress did not come around to our table very often, she was extremely helpful in describing the dishes and the busboys never let our water glasses get empty. One complaint was that we had to wait half an hour for our table, even though we had reservations at 7:30 and even came early! The hostess was rude, telling us they were getting the table ready when we asked her several times what the delay was. Otherwise, this is now on my list of favorite restaurants! Pros: Yummy food, Mostly good service, Extensive wine list Cons: Somewhat slow service, Rude hostess more

Absolutely Fantastic 5/1/2006

I will definitely return to AOC - amazing food and service. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Pros: wine list, menu variety more

Favorite LA Restaurant 4/24/2006

I've been to A.O.C. many times: dinner with friends, business dinners and romantic ones with my husband. Its casual but elegant atmosphere is great all around. The servers seem to be wine connoissers - their recommendations are spot-on. Rather than ordering specific items, ask the server to bring out the food and wine they think is best. You can trust their judgement and it makes for a more fun and educational experience overall. Only downside is that it can get quite loud. Note that it's probably not the best place for a vegan, people who don't drink, or people unwilling to experiment with food. Pros: Wine list, Interesting dishes Cons: Can get loud more

Great Restaurant 4/18/2006

My BF and I went here for his birthday, and had a great time. We were there for a couple of hours but enjoyed every minute of our leisurely meal. Our server Nicki was extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and recommended some great dishes. It is more expensive than the places we usually go, but the bill was actually less than I was expecting, and was worth every penny. I also mentioned when I made the reservation that we were celebrating a birthday, and they remembered and put a candle in our dessert...very sweet! more

Yay - go see! 4/14/2006

Great food and service, the winelist and menu items are a little overpriced, but when the place is packed and they do everything right, you can't really blame them. Pros: great service, small plates are fun Cons: overpriced more

User review by foodieesq 4/12/2006

Two things I don't remember about my visit to AOC: how long I was there and how much money I spent. The first doesn't concern me: I enjoyed every minute of my visit; the second, I perfer not to try to remember (though I know it was worth the hit to my monthly budget). The small plate selection was varied and the staff was quick to recommend a perfect glass of wine to accompany the dishes (also served by the half glass). Pros: food selection, wine selection, location Cons: crowded, expensive more

The Best Restaurant in LA 3/20/2006

Don't listen to the dude that one bad experience there. I have been here many, many times and it has always been great. Great service, great food, perfect seasonings and great cooking. I've eaten at all the best places in the US-French Laundry, Charlie Trotters, Per Se, all over LA and NY and this restaurant still ranks as one of my favorites. Also, one person said it's tiny-it's not that small. Suzanne is a genius. more

Worst Dining Experience in LA! 2/14/2006

Valentines Day - this was the worst dining experience my partner and I have ever had in Los Angeles. To AOC's credit, the manager recognized this and compd us but still the terrible service on a holiday was inexcusable. Half of our second course arrived before any of our first course and the server acted like we were being obnoxioius to question this. Then we waited more than 30 minutes for our first course while my partners second course sat unattended getting cold - with no wine. It went downhill from there. The food at this place is great. The service - at least tonight for Valentines Day - was the absolute worst of any place I've ever experienced. Free or not - I will NEVER return to AOC. Pros: Good food Cons: Horrible service more

Great wine list, good food, nice staff 2/14/2006

We sat at the bar at A.O.C. and had a great time. Our bartender was very helpful and friendly, the food was good (didn't knock me sideways, but certainly worth a return trip), and despite the crowded conditions, I found this to be a great place and I'll certainly recommend it. If you haven't been here before, this place is teeny tiny. In the downstairs dining room, there can't even be 10 tables, so definitely make a reservation if you can't go really early. I think the key here is to go early, when it's not so packed and the staff aren't so busy. more

Good, but not that Good 1/29/2006

The wine list is remarkable, and it's really a tremendously good place for wine. There was a lot of hyoe about AOC, and I really was underwhelmed by my overall experience here. The tapas style food was OK, but there was no ""Wow"" factor with the food (alb eit interesting). The service was a little pretentious, and I couldn't help feeling like I was being looked down upon (not good, as I've eaten at quite a better restaurants where I've been thoroughly pampered). The main restaurant is noisy but lively, and the upstairs patio is better (in my opinion) for a decent chat. This place is OK, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back here. Pros: Wine Cons: Noisy, Price, Food more

A beautiful restaurant 1/1/2006

It's such a lovely restaurant for all occasions! The menu is interesting and the ambience is excellent. If you want to have a more romantic and a quiet dinner, try to reserve a table upstairs or in the patio. We ordered 4 dishes (for 2 persons) and it's more than enough even though they all come in small portion. No room for dessert at the end but they serve good coffee. It's a great place for entertaining visitors too. Pros: beaufiful decor, great ambience, good food & service Cons: crowded setting more
