Editorial review from Citysearch 5/4/2013

I had a bad experinece at A & L on Glisan. I sat at the bar and watched a man make a sandwich and in the middle of it he put an picle slice in his mouth. Then he returned to making the sandwich without waching his hands. I mentioned it to the head server who minimized it. After this I was treated very hostily by a different staff member there. I was insulted by her treatment and I told her she lost my business. Very poor atmosphere and service. No stars to be ovoided. more

Excellent TVs, Service & Food 11/10/2011

Ok, I read some of the other reviews and I have to believe these folks were at a different bar. Or maybe it is because Steeler fans who are not part of the regular group thought they could fit in on SuperBowl day when it is totally swamped. Pros: null Cons: null more

Serious Disappointment! 2/17/2011

I traveled to Portland to visit family during the week of the Super Bowl. I looked on line for Steelers' bars in the area, and discovered A&L. My son, daughter and I drove across town to watch the game only to discover this hole in the wall establishment. We were excited upon entering the bar, but that didn't last long. Sadly, there were no tables to be found, so we were directed to a smoke filled garage out back. Yes, it was a garage complete with roll up door. The "tailgating section" as they called it was a large area where a few picnic tables were set up with the garage door open and several grills smoking up the place. Funny to me that smoking is prohibited inside bars and restaurants in Portland, Oregon, but you can have charcoal BBQ grills smoking it up. Once we were ushered to the area we were quickly forgotten. more

HORRIBLE experience 1/18/2011

My boyfriend is a huge Steelers fan, so this seemed a no brainer. I got there an hour early last weekend to get a seat for the game. First off, I found an empty table and started to sit down, some guys came over and took the whole table away!! Rude! So I had to sit in the annex area. waited a full 40 minutes before being acknowledged by the waitress, she brought a menu and then disappeared for an hour!! (ended up going out to the car and getting bottles of water just to have something to drink!) My friend finally had to go hunt her down to put in our order, which we did not get until half time!! When you are a place that advertises a team YOU NEED TO STAFF IT ACCORDINGLY!!!!! Also, bring cash as they only have ONE credit card machine for the 150 or so people that all cash out at once. more

The worst place to go.... 9/28/2009

My guy and I wanted to enjoy a special outing with Steelers peeps on Sunday. My guy caught wind of a bar that was all Steelers fans, little did we know that the establishment was short staffed. After an hr of waiting for a waitress she finally came to our table after walking by several times, low and behold (with the excitement) we thought our order was going to be taken, needless to say, she decided to laugh at us for mentioning that we had been waiting there for an hr and left us high and dry. I talked with my guy and agreed to go wait in the long line to order and waited another 30 min, finally I thought it was a sure thing we could put the bad service behind us and get our food no longer than, realistically 30 min considering the short staff. we waited 2 hrs and we were starving. Since the waitress was again walking by and ignoring us, my guy decided to que her and inform her that we had been waiting for our food for hrs and was polite about it. The waitress was very defensive and qued a lead bar tender over to assist. She came over with such an attitued and verbaly attacked us as my guy was letting her know that it was unexceptable to have to wait for 3 hrs total for food and to be treated like we were not there at all. She was vulgar and tacky with her chosen words yelling at us that we have no right to behave in her establishment. At this point she made a judgment decision and warned us to leave. She didn't want to listen to our expirience we were interupted every word that was being said by us and not once an empathy or a nice gesture to a solution. Her name is Shiloh I don't know who she is, however I do know I will spread the word as I did at work today and this establishment will be labeled as thumbs down... :( Pros: lot's of tv's Cons: The worst service in town more

NO GOOD BARS TO WATCH THE NFL ON SUNDAYS IN PORTLAND? 9/28/2009

Not enough servers on Sunday's. Hardly saw our server once the games started. If you want to have 2 beers and watch, perfect place! If you want to wait in line after the game for a half hour to cash out, ( NO exaggeration) perfect place. If you like all you can eat sweaty potatoes and rubbery bacon, perfect place. Our server did as good as she could and was very nice but too much for her, and I think, just one other server.. I can't seem to find a good place to watch football on Sundays.. GO VIKES!!!!!!! Pros: tv's, roof, ummmm I have to give one star to post this? Cons: oh boy don't get me started more

Hytyme equine rescue 1/23/2009

This bar is just a local crappy pool stick lopsided pool table ramshackle mess that does serve alcohol. It is open when it snows, usually and I wish they would get a better sign, it is sloppy but a big place, rent it out for a big group maybe and decorate yourself, they might work with you. more

A&L is great! 1/6/2009

We have been hannging out at A&L on and off for years. Great place to catch a game or hang with freinds. Typical Portlnad Tavern with pub food and good drinks. It is old school and we love it! more

ONE OF THE BEST SPORTS BARS IN TOWN 10/18/2008

Being a Cowboy fan i must say this is one of the original and greatest sports bars in PDX!! The bartenders are cool and the food is the bomb!! Pros: Big screens plenty Cons: parking more

Best Pittsburgh STEELER fan bar in Portland 10/11/2008

This is truely THE only place to go if you want to watch Pittsburgh Steelers. Big screens everywhere, great food, lots and lots of fans. They have a fan club set up with at least 150 people watching the games every week. Have raffles for prizes - great prizes like jerseys, sweatshirts, terrible towels, huge blankets, ... Pros: Great atmosphere, feel welcomed from just walking in Cons: parking is on side streets...but free more

A Place To Chill Out With Sports & Drinks 5/26/2008

The food here is hearty, and the beverage choices including beer on tap are many. Weeknights there are dart leagues, poker, and depending on which sports season it is you might have Ducks fans, Steeler fans, hockey fans (ok that is day and night), and more. The guys will turn on whatever show you want as long as someone else isn't already watching that tv...and there are plenty of big screen tvs to pick from. Bartenders and wait staff are friendly and know how to make a good drink. I like that it is close to MAX because parking can be a pain thanks to all the construction going on all over the place. If you like meat, pick the A&L Burger and fries and wash it down with a few pints. Men out number women usually, so girls...join me for a drink here! Pros: Awesome service, variety of drink choices, solid food more

Friendly Staff, Great Drinks, Enough TV choices for Everyone 2/6/2007

Just got done spending Superbowl Sunday at the A&L and it was great. The place was packed even in the outside area, but we still got excellent service. Bartender Brian makes a spicy bloody mary and a mouth-watering dirty martini. But my friends were more interested in all the beer choices on tap so they'll be back for more. Pros: Friendly Service, a lot of beers on tap, sports channels, fries Cons: parking is tough more

what a nasty bar 1/31/2007

Let me first say that I have had alot of REALLY bad bloody marys but theirs topped the chart(really bad)!!!! I have never been treated so badly by the employees. The guys behind the bar were belitting my friend and I as if we were oblivious to their comments. I went in there a few weeks ago hoping to have a better experience and nothing was different. My beer was flat...(it was like it was opened and set on ice for a few hours.) I sent my beer back and the kid didn't want to take it. I instead got a beer on tap...wasnt flat! I am just discusted with the place. It is a very grungy bar and I didnt once see the cook(who also happened to be one of the bartenders) wash his hands before he prepared any of the food! I am in the service industry also and really disliked my experiences at this trashy, dirty bar! Dont even waiste your time folks. The Coppertown is just up the street on halsey...GO THERE INSTEAD! Pros: Lotts of TV's Cons: Dirty, rude bartenders, bad food, SICK bathroom more

AWESOME Steelers Bar! 1/9/2006

Sunday was my first visit to the A and L and it was totally awesome, especially since I am a total Steelers fan! Everyone was friendly, the service was good (especially for being so crowded) and being able to watch the game any way I turned was incredible! Pros: Steelers Bar, Good food, Good Service Cons: Parking was ok more

Day Or Night This Place is Just Right 12/29/2005

Although sometimes the crowds overlap, there are distinct day and night crowds. During the day, you have regulars who come for the friendly service, PBR or special vodka drinks, Friday lunch specials (like grilled cheese & bacon sandwiches with tomato basil soup), video poker and casual chat with the bartenders. And if you want to pretend to work, you can get wi-fi at A&L if you sit closer to the West side of the bar. An alumni group from Grant seems to come most Fridays for lunch, and there is a large contingent from nearby construction and road projects who like the friendly service provided by wait staff like Meghan, Brian and Marco. Pros: service, cheap beer, hearty food more

I'm going this way 4/28/2004

When I first walked into A&L, I was like, "sure, no pudding". Most people would leave, but I gave it a chance. Instead of thirty some flavors of pudding on tap, they have BEER. What a novel idea. Don't look for a Butterschotch beer, instead enjoy a "MacMarmimans Mellenium Mudman"; call it the "3-M", sit back, and enjoy. Also, I like hockey, but I was unable to watch it. I guess I should come back during during the season they play Pros: Value, 3-M, Location Cons: , Smokey, No year round hockey more

Hockey Heaven 8/15/2002

As a diehard hockey fan, this is one of the few places in town that will accomodate all sports and has the TVs and space to do so. Service is excellent & there are many many kinds of beer to please everyone. Recently updated with new furniture AND an ATM. Super comfortable... even a couch for Monday nite football! The only place in town to watch sports, especially if you are a hockey fan! Pros: Many TVs, Beer specials, Hockey! Cons: Sunday Parking more

BEST DAMN SPORTS BAR 8/13/2002

This place is for the REAL sports fan......tons of TVs, good bar grub and lots of beer to choose from. Monday Night Football here is a real event. Two tacos for a buck and lots of people cheering for their teams. I've been to most other sports bars and think this is the best. Pros: Lots of TVs, Only real fans, Pool, Darts, PingPong more
