Good food, bad service 11/1/2009

Went to 75 Chestnut the other night, while the food was good, I noticed at the end of the meal that one of the side dishes that should have been served with my entree never came (I didn't notice until I saw the table next to us get the same dish). I pointed this out to our waitress and she offered a half-hearted explanation that the kitchen screws up sometimes and seemed as if she couldn't care less. Pros: Good food Cons: Bad Service more

A fine restaurant that has clearly lost its way 3/21/2009

The location, fantastic. Valet parking, flat of Beacon Hill, charming bar. 75 Chestnut has benefited from these attributes for years. I know, I lived on Beacon Hill for many years. Unfortunately, this restaurant has lost its way. The service is terrible. You might put up with the pretentiousness of the host and wait staff if you knew you were going to get a delicious meal. Quite the contrary. The menu is unoriginal. For starters, mussels or wedge salad with blue cheese. Which restaurant doesn't have that? The entrees are just as pedestrian. Steak (mine over cooked), lamb chops, chicken. What was original, unfortunately, was the desert. My wifge ordered a ""3 chocolate"" concoction. Served in small glasses, the one in the middle a luke-warm carmel liquid with sliced almonds. You eat it with a spoon. It had the consistency of toenails in bad Bailey's. Yuck. The 75 Chestnut menu is still as expensive as premier restaurants around town, so don't waste a special evening at this establishment. If you like edgy or great cuisine and/or good value, you will surely be disappointed. Pros: Location, bar Cons: Mediocre food, horrendous service, boring menu more

Paradise in my mouth 2/14/2009

Food- unreal. Atmosphere- lacking but not terrible. We started with their Bibb salad; they forgot to garnish the salad with its primary ingredient. The main entrees and dessert, however, made up for a what, in the end, became a small mistake. Mom's pot-roast reminded me of home. The steak with cream sauce was paradise in my mouth (really!). The chocolate trio is a must (ask my girlfriend). Service was incredibly friendly and helpful. The entire staff took pride in their work, as was exemplified when the chef bought us two desserts for the salad mistake. Overall, this place could easily go overlooked. The food is amazing, but this may not be the best place to propose. more

A Hidden Treasure! Go for BRUNCH 11/14/2006

I'm so glad that I tried this place for Sunday BRUNCH! First, the live jazz was just absolutely wonderful! The musicians created a relaxing, sophisticated ambiance. The restaurant itself is very small, but quaint. The food was surprisingly delicious! I usually look for more than one raving reviews before i try a place, but I've always been a fan of Beacon Hill and never had the chance to try it... but this place was better than expected. The only odd thing about the restaurant is that the waistaff is very young and inexperienced. Our waitress was chewing gum and wasn't very attentive. They brought out a salad when we didn't ask for it. Anyway, if you don't mind the odd service, everything else is worthwhile. Plus, the price isn't so bad. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Live Jazz Cons: Parking, Waitstaff more

All-Around Wonderful 7/23/2006

This is a wonderful spot tucked away in the Beacon Hill area. Sophisticated (but not stuffy)atmosphere with a very friendly and accomodating staff. Delicious food and great selection. A restaurant of this caliber could easily manage to procure higher prices, but it is very reasonable and the food is of the highest caliber. My husband and I have travelled the globe and eaten in many fine restaurants and we consider this one a rare find. We will definitely be back! Pros: Great atmosphere/Food/Service Cons: None that we encountered. more

What a dissapointment. 11/19/2005

Nice atmosphere. Bad accoustics. Terrible -- painfully terrible service. Couldn't get the orders right so that one of the six in our party was served well after everyone else was done eating. None of the 3 steak orders came out as cooked as ordered. Despite the acknowledged service flaws (the manager somewhat reluctantly told us that the late steak was ""on him"" -- and it still didn't arrive for another 15 minutes!) they had the audacity to add a 20% tip to the bill! Last visit to 75 Chestnut for these 6 customers. Pros: appearance Cons: just awful service, noise level, mediocre food more

From a winner to a loser 11/4/2005

Overall I feel 75 Chestnut has become just another average place. There is nothing really special about it, or anything to make it stand out in my mind anymore. The food wasn't bad, but it wasn't great and service was ok. For desert we had the Creme Brulee, I dont recommend it was like scrambled eggs and what happen to that chocloate bread pudding it was sinful. Would I return? Maybe as a last resort or out of boredom. Pros: Nice staff Cons: Boring wine list, Idenity problem, cheap glasses at bar more

The best in the hood 9/16/2005

Great food! Great service! The best place on the hill. more

Not Recommended, overall Unimpressive 7/15/2005

Ambience was stuffy, steak tips burnt to a blacked crisp (seriously) to top it off no smiles from the wait staff, not a recommended date spot for young couples. Overall not worth the value and we recommend they lighten up and make some improvements in the cuisine. Pros: Location, Nice Bartender Cons: Expensive, Pretentious Crowd, Unimpressive Food more

REally Bad 4/12/2005

Hostess did not even look at us when we arrived, until I asked her to do so. She took our coats and pointed to a table. The soup was cold and desperately needed salt, When it got it was really good. The pea puree with the rack of lamb was cold, very cold. The lamb was perfect. Possibilities, but needs attention. Way overpriced for service Pros: food, waiter Cons: food, receptionist more

Disappointing 5/23/2004

During a recent business trip, I thought this place fell short. The ambience was very nice, a bit dark but cozy. The service was excellent but I was disappointed with the menu, which featured a lot of standard items suck as grilled steak, colorado lamb, chicken cordon bleu...etc. I guess I just expected more creativity. I started with the broiled escargot, which were good, but similar to many other versions that I've eaten in the past. Nothing particularly interesting about it. I ordered the Lobster Scampi for my entree and, again, sort of boring. My partner ordered the Alaskan King Salmon which was five-spice seasoned and served with nutmeg infused creamed spinach, and that was tasty. For dessert we tried the cinnamon creme brulee and the chocolate bread pudding. Both were good. The wine list was somewhat limited. Not a bad place, but I'm sure Boston has better to offer. Pros: Ambience, Service Cons: , Limited Wine List more

In a League of It's Own 2/21/2004

I really do not know what to say other than: FANTASTIC, INCREDIBLE, UNREAL, DELICIOUS, WORTH EVERY PENNY. This was my first trip to 75 and I cannot wait to go back. Pros: Everything more

75 Chestnut is simply class 12/15/2003

I hate to let the secret out- but this neighborhood bar is nothing but elegance, romance, and simplicity. We order from the bar menu or the dinerr app menu to save $$ and still have a wonderful time. Go their for raises and quiet kisses. Pros: Bar menu, neighborhood folks Cons: Parking, desperate singles more

Deliciously unique 12/7/2003

""Our dinner last night was quite simply the best meal I have ever had. The flavors, the pace, the ambiance -- everything was perfect. I can't wait to go back."" Pros: Menu, Service, Ambiance more

truly magical 10/22/2003

""elegant, intimate atmosphere, excellent service, and beautifully prepared meals make dining at 75 Chestnut's a memorable event. I had a wonderful lobster risotto to start, a duck entree, and the creme brulee. for cheese fans, there's quite a selection on the cheese plate. portions are just perfect, enough to fill me up, but not so much that i dread dessert. this is definitely a perfect restaurant for special occasions. i can't wait to go back again!!!"" Pros: friendly staff, beautiful settings, romantic Pros: friendly staff, beautiful setting, romantic more

True ""Feast"" 8/20/2003

""I have dined here countless times and they surpass my expectations every time. Chef Michael Heath's creativity for food with fresh herbs and ingredients from the Northeast is absolutely amazing. You have to drop the regular idea of ""restaurant"" though. You don't go there just to eat food and drink wine, but you go there to have a dining ""experience"". Who would've thought scallops and spinach go perfect in a sweet carrot sauce with mint? Or how about figs on gorganzola toast points with fresh farmer's greens and drizzled with lemon thyme honey? Steamed Atlantic salmon in lettuce leaves with a sweet dill sauce? It's like a magic. It's a true feast."" Pros: everything more

A Must-Try!!! 5/7/2003

I really loved 75 Chestnut. I live nearby and have tried nearly every restaurant in the neighborhood, but 75 Chestnut is the best. Its quality, ambience and service are outstanding. We never once had to wave down our waiter, and he suggested a great wine and soup (the Herbed Clam and Shrimp Chowder!) for us to try. Also, it has great apps if you don't want to spend so much on the pricey entrees. Pros: Ambience, Attentive Service, Cozy bar area Cons: Expensive more

Was I at a museum? 4/12/2003

The food is simply art !! so worth every penny and more than we expected. So personal and ever so fabulous. I highly suggest 75 Chestnut for any special event: a memory of a meal; not often possible is it !? Pros: romantic, presentation, style Cons: leaving, close seating more

The Best 4/6/2003
