Love This Place 8/26/2008

The first time I went here was before seeing Hot Feet, and I loved it. The service was amazing and the staff was so polite. The only thing is that they took a long time to bring our food and by the time they brought it out my friends and family were all ready to go to the show so we allowed the food to come out the kitchen to at least see how presentation, and then we had the food sent back in to the kitchen to be packaged up. And because they knew they took a long time to prepapre the food and that we would not be able to bring the food intol the theatre they were kind enough to hold onto our food. And ever since that night I have been there ever since. My fav is something with scallops, and green lobster mashed potatoes (I think its lobster), and my fav app. is their crabcakes, they are so good, which I would suggest ordering at least two for yourself because you'll probably end up sharing. Pros: Food, Location, Seating, Ambience Cons: Time you have to wait for food, I definately suggest ordering app. more

Still My Favorite In NYC 1/1/2008

Always my favorite spot to come for special occasions... Came this time as a special event for Christmas- Then went to the theater with family after our meal. It was still as wonderful as it ever was. Pros: Atmosphere and Design, Food Cons: Sometimes Service more

newly redone beautiful interior, service still a bit shaky... 10/31/2007

My girlfriends took me for my birthday and we had a great time. The interior has been redone and is now ready for the 90s, updated and understaed with incredible attention to details. the lighting is elegant and the mood is great, less flashy.\r Our waitor was very nice but maybe not quite appropriate for an upscale restaurant. We almost felt bad for him, he would have been better off in a burger joint. We had ordered a bottle of campagne and when ready to top off all our glasses he pured a full glass to only one of us and then declaed ""oops bottle is empty"" loudly. When presented with the bill my friends split it and invited me. He returned with the 3 seperate checks and then loudly stated that we were given a 20% discount because of the restaurant being so new and that this had brought the total from $ 417 to $330. Too much information.Other than that we were very pleased. The food was great, we did not have to wait and were given a nice booth. Dessert came hitw candle and my name correctly spelled in chocolate letters. Agreat experience simnce we are all pretty easy going and not overly picky. Pros: beautiful ambiance , great design, food is fabulous Cons: service was a bit shaky but it was also right after re openend... more

Worst customer service I have experienced in a restaurant. 1/23/2007

I arrived at 44 restaurant with my two friends at 5:20 for a 5:30 reservation and we had notified them we had a 7:00 curtain at the theater. They told us they would have to see if we could be seated yet since they opened at 5:30 - however there were three or four tables already seated. We were seated by 5:40 and didn't receive our first course until 6:00 PM. The music blasting from the bar area was new wave rock and gangsta rap with profanities. We asked them if they could lower the music or turn it off and the host who had seated us said he might be able to make it lower. He did nothing. We asked our waiter and he asked the same person if the music could be lowered. The music got louder, we asked again and I asked for a manager - the host came back again and said he had lowered it in the restaurant. Another table left because of the loud music. The restaurant had a few tables filled with diners who were trying to talk and didn't seem to love the loud music. There were 2 girls sitting at the bar, who were talking and didn't seem like they would miss the music. The bartender and the host seemed to be the only ones that wanted the music. We told our waiter to give us the check for the appetizers we had eaten because we were planning to leave. Then the host came over to us and we said we couldn't stand the loud music and he said ""it is what it is"" . We left at 6:20 - also our entrees still hadn't come out before we said we were leaving even though we had specified a 7:00 curtain. The appetizers we ate were okay, not spectacular and the treatment we received was horrendous. I wouldn't even eat here again if I was offered a free meal for myself and several friends. Pros: pretty setting Cons: loud music, rude host and disregard for customer requests more

Speedy pre theatre dinner. 11/14/2006

We ate there on Friday before a show. We were sat immediately. Menu selections were perfect... pretty much something for everyone. I chose duck spring rolls for an appetizer , four large rolls with a wonderful sauce to dip it in. For dinner I had the filet and it was probably one of the best prepared filets I've had. Portions were generous. Staff attentive and not ""snotty"". Food came out quickly. Fun atmosphere. Music not as loud as expected. \r \r However if you go back for just dessert, be prepared to eat it in the lobby. We went back after a show just for dessert and since the lounge areas were all occupied we went to the restaurant... they really didn't want us to sit in the dining area just for dessert, even tho there were plenty of empty tables... they wanted us to sit in the lounge/lobby area for that... however they did end up sitting us in the dining room. Pros: perfectly prepared meals w/nice presentation more

A Cut Above on 44th St near Belasco 6/10/2006

We ate at 44 restaurant on Saturday night. Service and food were excellent. Busboy cleared a little early. Because we were dining pre-theatre it was a little hurried on our part. Our picks and pans: Music -thumbs down. Very loud Euro trash electronic monotonous droning. Definitely not suitable for the pre-theater crowd. It might be good for the after work crowd.\r Their pre-theater prix fixe was a cut above the rest: appetizer stand out - Duck breast with mushroom canelloni. Don't bother with the corn chowder/clam/chorizo soup. The chorizo was a memory and sounded better on the menu. We ordered the Tuna a la carte and Wild Salmon and chicken breast on the Prix Fixe. Large flavorful portions with great touches (Fiddlehead ferns were among the spring vegetables with the salmon.) Desserts were also delicious and great for sharing.\r We are definitely going back. \r Try not to sit near the back door. We were told it was locked and then 4 people blew past us. Fun lobby for drinks. Pros: excellent food, generous portions, great ambience Cons: loud droning electronic music, dark lighting after 6pm more

WHAT A COME BACK!!!! 3/17/2006

I love the Royalton and I used to eat at 44 in 2003 and there were many things i did not like. I recently came back and I can not express how fabulous it is now. WHAT A COME BACK!!!! They must have hired a fabulous new chef because the food is so eccentric and tastey. I would highly recommend the prosciutto wrapped shrimp which is to die for, and the entree lobster risotto is fabulous. It is a great atmosphere and a great date place or also a cool after work place to nosh and experience a diverse menu in a hip space. Since re-discovering this new and improved restaurant I eat at 44 at least once a week and sometimes more. I cannot express how great it is in words, go in and check it and experience something special. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED A+ more

A new Kid in Town 9/26/2005

I used to dine here but the sevice was terrible. They now have a Top Notch Manager running the show. He is very attentive and nows how make you feel welome. I think this new person will ehance your dinning experience. Rummor has it - he came in from the West Coast and ""knows"" the restaurant the business. Chef is also very creative. Bartenders are just ok - but maybe the new guy from out west will clean this up and let them go. Pros: new manager, west coast skill, smile Cons: week bartender, service, bartender more

SNOTTY 7/29/2003

The bartenders make good drinks, but with an attitude. They are the ones serving you but yet they have this attitude that every customer is below them. I used to enjoy this scene, but now it is so dried out. No one is there. There are these poor fishes swimming around in dirty water for decoration. The coolest thing about this place is the bathrooms. Bottom line; this place is not worth the price or the attitude you get. . Pros: Bathrooms, Cosmopolitans Cons: Attitude, Dirty more

Pre theatre 7/22/2003

Brought my friends for pre-theatre dinner because of the location, and had a reaaly great meal. Food was increadible, our waiter was really helpful about wine suggesstions (didn't try to screw us at all!), and got us out in plenty of time for the show. Went back a few days later for drinks, and had another great nite. Pros: value, service, location Cons: needs a new look, door staff more

you have GOT to go 2/26/2003

We had the BEST time!!! People used to say that this place was snotty - not true. Everyone, from the cocktail waitresses in the lounge to the staff in the dining room, could not have been nicer. The food was great, we had the beef tenderloin and the salmon. Whoever said this place was too hip and unfriendly hasn't been there in the last year, because this is the third time we've been and it's always been great. Pros: service, food Cons: look needs updating more

not so yummy 1/30/2003

i got the loster salad appetizer last night - it was $19 - and the lobster tasted funny - kind of like detergent or something. then i got a piece of turbot (a type of white fish) which was around $33 and it tasted kind of fishy and bland. the olive bread and butter was good though. and my friend LOVED her steak. We sat in a booth - on this velvet type of material and it was really dirty. Pros: good service Cons: food not great yet $$ more

Still Fantastic and Delicious 7/18/2002

I was so happy to meet up with friends there and to remember how cool the vodka bar and 44 restauran is t is. The fish was perfect and the martinis are always yummy. The music industry still frequents this place and brings a cool vibe and crowd coming back year after year. Pros: Cool Vibe, Best Martinis, Comfy Chairs more
