Disappointed 2/2/2011

The music was annoying and way too loud for conversion; the clientele was rude; the bathrooms were filthy; people were in the parking lot eating out of the back of a pick-up; and the service was awful -- the bartender looked past us and we never saw a wine list. Hard to believe Washington Ave has better service and ambiance than this dump. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. more

Wickedly Good! 1/12/2011

Great wine bar, good ambiance, and good selection of wines. On a nice day, you can sit in their beautiful and lush courtyard. more

As the name implies, Coolest Wine Bar Ever 10/12/2010

Sparkling Shiraz. All you need to know. 5/31/2010

First off: I love 13. I love the ambiance. I love the building. I love the neighborhood. Getting over my hang ups: I just can't justify spending $13/glass. Or waiting 30 min for my glass. It can be dead as a doornail or busy as a bee but I've never waited less than 15 min looking my thirstiest and eagerest to get help at the bar. And yes, one time I waited 30 min and all my friends were served until my glass of wine was served. And ... no apology. But I've been back. Lots. On slow nights exclusively. Man, since they've redone their outdoor patio I can't get enough of it. BUT THE END ALL BE ALL: sparkling shiraz. To my knowledge you can only get this nectar at 13 and Sonoma. [Even Spec's had been out the last 5 times I've tried to purchase.] I was lured back to 13 b/c a friend said they had $5 happy hour specials. Well, sure, white wine only and very little. I'm a low brow girl - where's my cheap prosecco? I like very little white wine. And none of it includes the word chardonnay. So I dropped a good amount of money [at least for me] to get my sparkling shiraz - hey, it was an exceptionally hard Monday. And yes, it was totally worth it. But I can only do that once every 6 months. Conclusion: 13 is a place to escape the pretentious on the patio Sun - Wed if you can spend $9-13/glass AND IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT. But otherwise, I choose boheme and other happy hours for my wine. I heard Reef has an amazingly low mark up - next on the list. I do love their scallops. Pros: sparkling shiraz, patio - trust me, that's all you need Cons: price, food selection, parking more

Very Enjoyable Wine Bar 2/4/2010

We had a very enjoyable time at 13 Celsius. Everything from the wine to the service was top notch. Too far for us to be regulars but, if we were closer, it would be a regular spot for us. Pros: Selection, Quality, Ambiance Cons: Too far from home (Kingwood) more

Relaxed and Inviting 2/1/2010

Went here on a Tuesday to have the cupcake and wine pairing, something they only do on Tuesdays I found out. All of the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. The cupcakes were delicious as was the Panini. A great place to meet friends or hang out at the bar yourself. Pros: The staff and the wine list more

Romantic cozy upscale wine bar 12/6/2009

I think the pros and cons probably mostly cover it... this is a fine place for me where I don't feel weird being a wine amateur but wanting to enjoy good wine. Pros: good mood, helpful waiters, good wine list, great cheese! Cons: easily get pricey, a little dark more

Cool and unique... 7/20/2008

If you can make the drive... it's a lot of fun. It's unique with outdoor seating. The atmosphere is kind of cold but it fits the style so it's not likely by accident. The wine selection is long as well as the meat/cheeses. Me and my girlfriends had a blast when were here but the drive was a bit of a pain. We'll try it again if we ever make it down there with gas prices the way they are! Does 13 Celsius offer free taxis to outer-loopers? haha.. Pros: Fun and lively, good meats/cheeses Cons: Too far for outer-loopers more

My other favorite wine bar. 7/16/2008

The thing that I most love about this place and what would keep me coming here it the building. They did a great job on it and I love everything about it. The guys behind the bar (owners?) are hugely knowlegable about their wines. I've always enjoyed their recommendations. The cheese plates are very good and nicely presented. They have a really good beer selection. Try the Fireman's #4 which is a Texas beer that's turning up on tap and in bottles all over town these days. Some of the women that work their could use an attitude adjustment at times. I've had friends complain about this too. The guys are always nice but the woman are just rude sometimes. There's never an excuse for that and this place, though it does a nice steady business, has never been really crowded the many times I have been there so it's not like they were being testy because they were really busy. Of course, that won't stop of from going, we just avold the ladies working there. Pros: BUILDING, selection, atmosphere, owner's wine knowledge Cons: female employees more

Mike really gets it! 5/18/2008

We love this place! The wine selection is excellent and affordable. Our first time there, Mike, the owner, offered us multiple tastings before we made up our minds on a bottle. We've been several times since, and seen the wine list change and diversify. Mike is very knowledgeable and has continued to be very helpful. The rest of his staff is perhaps not as motivated or passionate about what they do. The food selection is very enjoyable. There is an increasing number of items to choose from, all very well executed. They choose fine ingredients, and keep the selection simple, sticking to what they know best, with flavors truly reminiscent of Europe. And serving wine at 13 Celsius makes perfect sense in Houston! The decor adds to the charm of this place, although the outside seating is very inviting! Caroline Street is relatively quiet, something rare at other outside venues in Houston. In general, the place is busy enough to be lively, but not so packed that you can't get seating or service. We will definitely spread the word! more

Excellent wine bar with a classic European feel but with local comfort and friends 2/17/2008

I've been going to 13 Celsius, a trendy yet laid-back european wine bar, for a little over a year now. I first found out about it in the Midtown Newsletter via e-mail and was among the first to venture out with friends to the tucked-away location that is very convenient yet several blocks away from the packed & boisterous part of Houston Midtown that most people are familiar with. Pros: Ambience, Service, Drinks Cons: Off the beaten path, may have to give directions to first timers more

Nice architecture, nice wine, and nothing else. 2/4/2008

I was underwhelmed by my visit to 13 Celsius, perhaps because of all of the hype I had heard and read prior to my visit. Yes, the architecture is interesting and ""preservation-mod cool."" They left the cieling and walls and floors ""untreated"" to preserve the character of the drycleaners it was once. Too bad it is probably just as loud now as it was then, too. My wife and I visited on a Friday evening after dinner. Place was packed with lots of loud talkers in ""business casual"" trying to be heard over the tinny music with no bass sound (we heard a lot of high-hat and snare, with the occasional yelled lyric). The lack of soft surfaces turns the place into a hard amplification chamber. The bar staff reflected the hard surface of their workspace - no engagement, no warmth, no interaction even to check how we were doing. Not at all what I had expected or hoped for. I won't go back, despite (or because of) how much I loooked forward to liking the place I had heard so much about. Maybe the name of the place reflects one's reception - cool, too cool. more

Great place for small office party! 5/22/2007

The wife and I went out exploring one night and came across this cozy little wine bar. We stayed for a couple of hours at the bar and the staff was tremendously friendly and the recommended wine was great! Now we've been to a couple of local wine places and this one just felt right to us. Unfinished walls, exposed bricks, nice lighting and the background music was lively without being overpowering. Pros: Cool little atmosphere and great staff willing to help Cons: limited food menu more

Great new spot! 4/22/2007

This is a nice new spot in Houston. I decided at the last minute to throw a wine-tasting party for my boyfriend, and the owner was extremely accomodating. A wine tasting typically takes a week to prepare, but he was able to get things together in one day! Everyone was impressed and we had a great time! Please visit this new spot...you will not be disappointed! Pros: good wine selection, nice atmosphere more

Doesn't feel like Houston. 3/8/2007

I love that' it's ""hidden"". It can get a bit noisy becasue of maintaining the integrity of the building but the wine selection is outstanding and Ian is the best kind of proprietor. I'll bring my ""big city"" firends here any time! Hurry though because once the word gets out, good luck getting a seat. more

just opened 3/8/2007

Just opened but had a good experience. The atmosphere is nice. Lots of plush couches vs the usual hard wood chairs in wine bars. The list is already looking decent. The truffle cheese was fabulous. Although and we got a corked bottle of wine they claimed was just an ?unusual? bottle from the case. But all in all a nice hang out spot. They also offer sandwiches and beer if your not in the mood for vino. Pros: Not crowded yet, comfy couches galore, really nice atmosphere Cons: not very knowledgable, selection is below average more

Amazing cappuccinos! 2/22/2007

I love this new spot! I especially like their cappuccinos and go back at least 3-4 times a week. They also have free wireless internet access so I can bring my laptop and do some work over a nice glass of wine and a cheese sampler. Pros: Feels like a neighborhood hangout where ""everyone knows your name"" - inviting and cozy Cons: Opens at 4pm so I have to wait until they open to get my cappuccino fix! more

LOVE IT! 2/21/2007

As a couple who love wine and are known to frequent wine bars... we have enjoyed becoming regulars here! The fabulous service, wine selections, amazing food and relaxing atmosphere keep us coming back for more. Try the torta - it is out of this world! Pros: Atmosphere, selections Cons: Single glass prices are too high more
