My wife and I have worked with Bruce for several years now on our personal tax filings, and have overall been very happy. With the exception of one deduction that Emily's mom caught (which we've never let him forget), Bruce and his team have been very thorough - including dealing with some relatively complex partnership and alternative investment treatments. Definitely on the conservative side (don't look for fancy tax avoidance strategies here), but if you want to complete your filings with a minimum of fuss and worry, Bruce is your man.

Whenever I'm leaving town for more than 24 hours, MasterPark is my preferred off-site lot. They have three lots - A, B, and C - and while the first two are slightly closer, they all have efficient shuttle service, and Lot C offers the best pricing (typically $8-$9 per day).
While there are many other offsite lots to choose among, MasterPark offers a great combination of: secure lots, efficient transfers, clean & well-lighted drop-off centers, plus online reservations (a good idea for high-volume holidays) and discounts for Web users and regular customers.
Always take a look at their website for current discounts - just print the coupon and present it when you pay: http://masterparking.com/

If you didn't know it was there, you'd never find Patina - a basement storefront tucked down a steep alley in North Seattle's Fremont neighborhood. But if you have a passion for mid-century modern and love a bargain to boot, this little shop is worth a visit.
The store offers a mix of styles, ranging in period from the 1930's (at the early end) to the 1970's. Most of the stock is American or Scandinavian furniture from the 1950's and '60's, including original Eames and Saarinen pieces, plus interesting finds from "unknown" designers of the period.
In addition to the core furniture offering - sofas, chairs, dining sets, etc. - the store stocks a small selection of decorative items and artwork. My favorite find so far has been a 3' x 5' oil painting riffing on a 1968 LBJ campaign poster in op art style.
The stock turns over frequently, so if you don't see what you're looking for on your first visit, stop in again - you may find the perfect item at a price you can love.

I've worked with Dave on a series of projects - from a garden fence to a complete home remodel - and found him to be a very skilled designer, able to come up with creative solutions to difficult space and cost constraints. He's easy to work with, doesn't cop a lot of architect attitude, and tells you what he thinks.
If there's one area of concern with Dave, it's that he doesn't always nail down the business details the way he should - items like matching estimates to bills, etc. can get lost in the shuffle. Keep an eye on that and you're sure to be happy with your results.

SHED is a design/build collective founded by four UW architecture grads with a passion for spare, thoughtful building design coupled with exacting craftsmanship in construction and detailing. With several award-winning public commissions (including the Pike Place Market museum) and a growing list of private residences to their credit, the group is quietly building a reputation for excellent work. In addition, the partners have individually and collectively shown their conceptual design work at a range of local galleries and exhibit spaces, and have been as well received for their theoretical contributions as for their built structures. If want a design partner who will challenge you to create great design and great space, SHED is a great place to start.

My wife and I had the remodel from hell - halfway through demo, with the roof off and winter coming, we ran into unexpected foundation problems. In the end, we had to dig out 2/3 of our foundation, drive 85 steel pilings (and watch our hole in the ground fill with water for 2 unplanned months). Swenson Say & Faget were the folks that put us back on solid ground. We didn't have much contact with them (our architect hired them), but they cranked out the studies and structural recommendations that we needed to solve our problems. Can't speak for their interpersonal skills, but our house is still standing...

An excellent way to share family photos (when your family doesn't live nearby)

I know I'm kind of a late arrival to the whole digital photo craze -- my wife and I weren't moved to buy a decent digital camera until we knew we had a baby on the way (see my review of the Canon A95 -- our recent choice, and a great pick).
What finally sold us on the idea was my sister's absolute mastery of Shutterfly. She has three kids - twin boys and another, younger boy (it's all boys in my family - seven for seven and counting), and lives in LA. We don't get together as a family more than once or twice a year, but I always feel like I know what's going on with them because my sister sends dozens of photos of her kids almost weekly -- all via Shutterfly.
The best thing about the service - especially as image sizes continue to grow - is that the images aren't actually delivered to your friends' or family's inbox. You upload images once to Shutterfly, and then send out messages to friends indicating which images you want to share. Shutterfly delivers attractive emails with links back to the pictures (or slideshow) at their site. That way friends get to see the images, but all the storage is handled by Shutterfly's servers, not your inbox.
Another great feature of the service is the ability to turn your digital images into a wide range of photo goodies -- not just prints, but nicely-formatted cards, hardbound books, mugs, aprons, etc. We never used to find time to pull holiday cards together, but the last two years running we've ordered pre-printed cards from Shutterfly and been very pleased with the results.
There are other websites offering similar services, and they may be equally good (although my sister invested a ton of time and energy in Ofoto - with mixed results - before switching to Shutterfly). It's worth trying a few before picking one, because once you have a big library of uploaded photos you'll be reluctant to switch (which is exactly what they want). If you've tried them all and think your pick is better than Shutterfly, I'd love to hear about it before it's too late...

My mom found these guys after a fender-bender in her VW vanagon and raved for weeks after about what nice people they were, what a good job they did, and how fair their prices were. Based on her endorsement, we now have a list of family friends who have worked with H&I, and I have yet to hear a bad review. Their specialty seems to be cosmetic bodywork, so I can't speak for their other services, but if that's what you need, these are the guys to see.
