It's hard to knock Southwest when you consider how they have impacted the cost of domestic flights. When SWA comes to your town, suddenly American and Delta are dropping their fares like crazy. Although I wouldn't call the "cattle call" free for all of grabbing any open seat a perfect experience for family travel, it's hard to beat it in price. Their Rapid Rewards program is also just as great-- my husband and I have each earned several free flights.

Having lived in Delaware for several years, I relied on the Philadelphia International Airport quite a bit. The terminals are large and well-labeled, but walking from one to the next can be troublesome. If you're stuck boarding in an E Gate, you have practically no choice in food. Baggage claim isn't bad, but it takes forever if you're flying Southwest.

Atria's really surprised me. This location is smack-dab in the middle of a residential area and looks pretty much like it fits in as a large house (it's also the flagship location). The food/prices are upscale, and dining ranges from a casual lunch on the patio to an intimate dinner in one of the upper rooms. One of the more intimate Atria's- great for a date!

If you can climb your way up to Federal Hill Park, you'll be rewarded with a fantastic view of the Inner Harbor. As another reviewer mentioned, this is a great spot to watch the Independence Day fireworks without dealing with the craziness of typical Inner Harbor crowds. Overall, a nice place to relax and regroup when visiting the city for the day.

Six Flags Great America is what many parks aspire to be--family friendly, themed, and containing many world-class coasters. Ticket prices aren't cheap, but now that also includes admission to an impressive, themed water park.
Crowds are huge at this popular summer destination, so double check whether any major park-sponsored events are scheduled for your planned day. One word of advice-- get there early! By early afternoon, lines for popular rides are quite long, so arrive early, and ride your favorites first.
Be sure to stop at the Western-styled BBQ restaurant; burgers are huge enough that my husband and I actually split a meal. The prices, though seemingly pricey are actually fantastic if you consider the portions.
Be sure to consider a return trip while you're at the park. You can usually purchase return tix for 19.99; not bad if you live near the park.

The Terrace Restaurant is a fabulous café inside Longwood Gardens. The main downside to this fantastic restaurant is that you cannot eat here without purchasing an admission ticket to the entire estate. Longwood Gardens is well worth the cost of admission though, so do yourself a favor and make reservations for a late lunch during your trip.
The food selection is impressive, and they have a very affordable and long wine list to complete your meal. Make sure you save some room for dessert-- this is the place to splurge! If you can, try to get a seat on the umbrella'ed patio.

Although I wouldn't classify the Lincoln Park Zoo as the best zoo I've ever been to, let's face it; it's definitely the cheapest. That's right-- it won't cost you a penny to enjoy the polar bears happily lounging on rocks or the meerkats giving visitors a show. It's quite nicely done for what it is, and I have always enjoyed walking around. Design-wise, it's easy to find yourself backtracking to find your animal of choice, so be on the lookout for the zoo's attempt at signage. There's a food court and several vendors throughout the park, so you can find food without leaving the area. Just remember, don't feed the animals!

Not the best zoo, in my opinion

I had extremely high expectations when I paid my rather significant admission to the San Diego Zoo. I prepared myself to be astounded and amazed but never quite got that far. Is it a huge zoo? Yes. Are there a ton of animals? Yes. The catch is that for as "natural" as the zoo claimed its habitats were, I thought they still looked pretty contrived. The huge crowds and traffic jams combined with the uneven terrain and narrow walkways to make a tiring day for me. I would like to go back and give it a second try, but with local competitive alternatives at a fraction of the cost of admission to the SD Zoo (like Brookfield Zoo), it might be awhile.

Kennywood Park is the epitome of the old-time trolley park. In addition to its nationally-ranked roller coasters (the Thunderbolt, the Racer, Jackrabbit, Phantom's Revenge, and Exterminator), Kennywood is equally known for quirky rides like Noah's Ark, a fun house that rocks as if on the open waters, and the Kangaroos, a cyclical ride that gives even the youngest of riders a little thrill.
Ticket prices are going up a little too quickly, in my opinion; however, the park is trying to update and restore old rides. It's one of the few remaining parks with a designated picnic area, so you can bring your basket into the park through a special entrance. Plan on spending an entire day at the park, but you won't need much more than that.
