  • Soldier Field - for better or for worse

    Rating:

    Review of: Soldier Field

The new design of Soldier Field always stirs debate, and sometimes that is a good thing. While the neoclassical colonnade of the old stadium was retained, a funky modern stadium design was plopped onto the site to create an architectural equivalent of a shotgun marriage. The modern facilities are actually quite nice, and the new stadium would look cool if it stood on its own two feet. As it now stands, the design is an architectural compromise.

  • For Eyes Optical on Madison

    Rating:

Review of: For Eyes Optical Co.

This For Eyes Optical outlet is on the ground floor of the attractive but unheralded Chicago Building along Madison. I am happy to report that the customer service is excellent here. Whenever I need an adjustment on my frames, there is always someone here to adjust them quickly and at no added cost.

Review of: Wls Tv Channel 7

The studios for WLS Channel 7 are located just a block from the Chicago Theater. A new ground level studio is currently under construction, which will probably attract legions of idiots trying to get on camera. A new color message board was recently installed, and it probably flashes numerous subliminal messages to watch WLS.

    Review of: Wright College

Wright College is a community college at Narragansett and Montrose. Its campus is actually a relatively progressive design for a junior college. It was designed by the architecture firm Bertrand Goldberg & Associates, more famous for the design of the great Marina City complex. The four classroom and facilities buildings, are connected to a central hub. The largest structure looks like a squashed pyramid.

  • Darkroom has a diverse crowd and cool music

    Rating:

    Review of: Darkroom

The Darkroom is a cool club in Ukrainian Village on Chicago Avenue. Its name is a play on words in relation to photography, some of which is displayed on the walls. When the club cranks up the music and the dance floor gets jumping, it gets very difficult to see the photos in the dark room, so just go with the flow and enjoy the variety of world music played here. The crowd is very diverse, which is a good thing.

  • McCormick Place is big convention center

    Rating:

Review of: McCormick Place Convention Complex

McCormick Place is a massive convention center by the lakefront. It is perfect for large events like the annual Chicago Auto Show. It is a shame that it is so isolated from downtown, as a network of shuttle buses are always used to move conventioneers to and from their downtown hotels. The Hyatt McCormick is the only hotel next to McCormick Place.

  • UIC - go Flames !

    Rating:

Review of: University Of Illinois At Chicago

I graduated from UIC and generally I enjoyed my years studying here. The master plan of the campus design was a funky creation by Walter Netsch. Planners have been trying for decades to make the campus more user-friendly, and after passing through the other day it definitely seems like a cheerier place to go to school.

  • Esquire has seen better days

    Rating:

    Review of: Esquire Theater

The Esquire has definitely seen better days. Its primo location on Oak Street now contrasts with the sometimes moribund experience of seeing a movie here. It used to be a rather slick place to see a film, but the facilities now seem a bit dim and is staffed with some people who don’t really care if you are having a good time at the movies or not.

  • Vic Theatre is grungy but good

    Rating:

    Review of: Vic Theatre the

Vic Theatre is hanging on as an old movie theater and concert venue in Lakeview. It is a charming facility, but the interiors are showing signs of wear and tear. The balcony seating is good for concerts if you want to avoid the potential mosh pit of the main floor. The Brew & View is a cool concept where they show two or three movies and sell beer and pizza to create a very informal atmosphere akin to a giant den at a frathouse.

  • Davis Theatre in Lincoln Square

    Rating:

    Review of: Davis Theatre the

Neighborhood movie houses like the Davis Theatre are becoming like entertainment dinosaurs, but locals are fortunate that the Davis is still around. It is not the cleanest or loveliest of movie theaters, but it somehow has a bit of character that is completely missing from the sterile multi-screen suburban complexes. They have four screens and show a decent selection of films.
