Great for kids
I remember going to Storyland as a child. It was the greatest place to use your imagination and explore, get a key, listen to stories. I haven't gotten to take my kids here but I hope to very soon....
I remember going to Storyland as a child. It was the greatest place to use your imagination and explore, get a key, listen to stories. I haven't gotten to take my kids here but I hope to very soon. It's great to take pictures and have memories that last forever. I STILL have my storyland key from when I was a child. I probably first went about 20 years ago. I would recommend this to anyone. Go to Storyland and then go to the zoo which is close by.

I have been here to get a pet but also I was assigned here as part of my High school class many years ago (wow about ten years!) and it is a good facility to take your pet. Before they put a pet out for adoption, they make sure nothing is wrong with it and that it's friendly enough to be someone's pet. They make sure the animals are fed and well taken care of. Five and Dime Antique Mall is located on 19th Street/Chester. It's a wonderful place to go looking for antique's and collectibles. It is not only one person selling stuff but tons of people who have rented a space with the Five and Dime selling their Antique's and collectibles. It's like several classy yard sales crammed into one multi level store. Some of the prices are steep but you can find some real bargains as well. My grandparents have a space here and while they sometimes gripe about the cost of rent, they really enjoy finding stuff and putting it out for sale. My Grandma has told me that this is the best antique place she's ever been with. They have vendor nights and potlucks that are only open to the vendors that brings along a real community feeling if you have a space there.

The web site gives a map of it's location, volunteer information and lists some of it's current exhibits. Currently it has: Milton Goldstein Photography Visions of the Magnificent West June 29 - September 20, 2006. It also sometimes shows a picture of some of the art on display, which is good for me, because I don't get to go to the Museum of art that often.

Happy Smogs is located in Oildale on the corner or Roberts Lane and Airport Drive. Across the street is a Yum Yum Donuts and a Jr. High. I always hate smog time and going to Happy Smogs in the past made it a little easier. Their prices are usually cheaper then some of the other smog shops in Bakersfield plus you can often find a coupon in the phone book for their shop. The building isn't that attractive but the staff gets the job done right and will sometimes give you tips on what to do to get your car to pass smog. When I used to live in the same part of town as Yum Yum Donuts, I liked to go to Yum Yum donuts around Halloween. I liked to buy the donuts that had frosting and they decorated with Halloween sprinkles (in brown and orange colors). They are also open 24 hours so if you're in the mood for some sweets, you can go at anytime. I do think the brick red color that they repainted their store is ugly...But looks can be deceiving so go inside and enjoy a donut.

You can get bread, doughnuts, and more! They have a punch card and once you fill it up you can get two items for free! Some days are double punch days! Some days are for the older crowd and they get discounts. You can't beat the price and it tastes great.

Krispy Kremes was the BEST doughnut place around. It wasn't even Bakersfield that long and they closed it. Boo hoo! I heard that they wanted to do cutbacks in California and Bakersfield was it. No fair. :( It was clean, had great doughnuts, you cuold watch them being made and they gave your kid a free hat. But if you want to go here now, you have to go out of town.
