A friend of mine recommended Hair Mates as a good alternative to pricey salons and other friends appreciated it after my haircut. You can see a big amount of hairstylists inside the store and most of them are Japanese. (coming from there or born here) I think this salon would be suitable for Asian guys because of their style. Also, the price is reasonalbe, $40 including tax. By the way, people who are really strapped for cash can give a try on their salon school. They supervise theirstudents very strictly so you can feel at ease about it.

St. Marks Bookshop has been famous for its plenty of design and art magazines, ranging over architecture, interior design, fine art, industrial design, fashion, painting, graphic design, etc. ( I finally found IdN here after searching for a whold month) Japanese magazines are also availabe here since the store is located in East Village. By the way, the cool cards stuck in my room were mostly gotten in the entrance of the bookshop. You can find a lot of rare coolcards and the update is very frequent!

NYU studnets can get a special price as 18% off for apple powerbook series. Also, apple peripherals are much cheaper here! (might mouse for $44+tax) Besides powerbook, they also provide student special for printers of specific types. Moreover, if you are interested in making circuits, you can also find some electronic stuff here which are mainly provided for ITP students, such as: breadboard, pic, resistor, adapter, stevomotor, LED, switch, etc. Or you can get a ITP student pack (physical computing kit) instead of buying stuff separately and of course, all the prices are much lower than Radioshack!

I just came back from an event of photographhy in Apple store SOHO. There are always a lot of event including art/design, music (actually Doves just held a small unplugged concert 2 weeks ago), speech, conference....etc. Of course, you can always witness the latest Apple products there but my advice is: play the new gadgets to your heart's content in the store and purchase them online! p.s. Taking pictures in the store is allowed.

Here you can find all textbooks and all kinds of NYU clothing and stationeries are available as well. NYU students can have a tax-free special price. But I wont's recommend buying NYU notebooks here. You can get the same format of notebooks at STAPLES by much cheaper price ($3.00 for 3 notebooks) though there is no NYU cover on it. By the way, it's worth taking a look at the discount area in the basement.

For those who can't find their adapters: Good news! You can find complete types of adapters here! I have found the AC/DC 1A 9V adapter for a whole month and finally got it by a satisfying price. You can ask the worker to change another pin and solder for you. The charge is around $2. They also sell various powers, batteries, valises..etc. Though the interior is a little bit old and undecorated, it's worth taking a look for electronic stuff!

The film developing sevice here is excellent. It is the best in my experiences. The price is not cheap. But if you are a professional photographer and reject the supermarket service, this is certainly a place for you to try. I also like the choices of photo margins they offer. If you live outside NY, you will need to pay first when asking for the mailing envelopes. So ask your NY friends and relatives to grasp some free mailing envelopes in their store so you don't need to pay before even getting those envelopes.

I had looked for black sheet-cover set(pillow cover, fitted sheet, quilt cover) for a while and finally found it just in the neighborhood! This store is located at the intersection of 1st avenue and 17th street, right beside the Stuveysant Town. It seems that you can get an "unexpected" discount by the clerk. In my past two shoppings, I paid a bit less than I had calculated. The only one defect is that you have to spend a while on picking out your favorite from a mess. Though some casings are broken, you can always another one in mint condition.

Clodagh Design is a interior and architectural design studio. I attended the studio by a chance of the event "Openhousenewyork 2005". The office originally is the Brooks Brothers Clothing House and has preserved the dramatic original brick arches and walls and considerd feng shui principles in the renocation of this loft space. You can feel free to use all the displayed furnitures and the comfortable interior design will put you totally at ease. It's an awesome space for taking a look.

I just bought a new, cheap guitar here for around $150 including a belt, several pics and a EXTRA-STRINGLIFE. I personally consider this store better than guitar center though it's in a smaller scale. You can find brand new, used, vintage of both acoustic and electric guitars and other various instruments as well. Because the location of East Village, it's commanplace to witness all kinds of musician gathering around. This store is quite a heaven for pros and novices alike.
