A few weeks ago, I found myself visiting relatives out on the Island and stuck with nothing to do before dinner. My cousin mentioned that he wanted to go pick up some comic books, so we took a ride over to Fourth World Comics in Smithtown. I thought that the store's layout was superb and they had a great selection of back-issues -- even more than the store that I usually frequent does. I picked up a few issues that I couldn't get near my own house, and found a new place to stop by when I'm out that way.

For over two decades, Cosmic Comics has been THE place to pick up your comic books in Nassau County. The selection of comics, graphic novels, action figures and collectibles that Cosmic Comics offers is second to none.
The staff has always been extremely helpful in locating hard-to-find items for me and the prices are hard to beat, both locally and online.

In the late '80s and early '90s, Doubleheader was one of the best places to go and get some baseball cards. It was a small store with erratic store hours and owned by partners who cared about the hobby. A couple of decades and two relocations later, this store is a mish-mosh of overpriced memorabilia and displays that haven't been updated in years. One partner no longer is around, and the remaining owner has really let this store go downhill.

Count Dracula's Comic Crypt moved to Oceanside a few years back, after leaving their long-time location in Lynbrook. I can't help but think that this store is hanging somewhere in suspended time, though, somewhere around 1983. It's really strange how you can walk in and totally feel out of place in here.
The owner is a nice man but the store has no air conditioning and on a hot, summer day you will usually find him sleeping when you walk in. The prices on the back issues haven't been changed in years (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3 had a $250 price tag on it) and the selection of new issues leaves much to be desired.
It is a good store if you are looking only through their bargain bins.

This is one of my favorite hobby stores on Long Island. They have a great selection of sports cards, autographs and even comic books. The owners are extremely friendly and more than happy to help you no matter what. I've been there a few times looking for a gift with a budget in mind, and they always find a way to get me the perfect item without trying to push anything out of my budget.

Farmer Joel's has been an institution in Oceanside for decades. I always go there when I'm going to get a sandwich or some cold cuts. They have the best side salads (potato, macaroni and cole slaw) out of all the delis around. In addition to just being a deli, they have a huge selection of fresh produce and they even do catering. They just built a brand new, two-story building that looks like it is almost ready to open. I can't wait to see the new Farmer Joel's!

Cross Island Fruit is one of those stores that you'd really miss if you suddenly moved elsewhere. Aside from having a huge variety of fruits and vegetables, at prices that supermarkets can't even touch -- this megastore also has a butcher, a bakery, a fish shop, and a newsstand inside. In addition, they have seasonal specialties like Easter baskets and Christmas trees and wreaths. You really can't go wrong with anything you buy at Cross Island Fruit -- just try to get there early to avoid the crowds.

Phil-Amy Florist is one of the best flower shops that I've ever been to. The staff is friendly and always willing to help you pick out the perfect gift, no matter what your budget may be. Their delivery service is always punctual and reliable, and the quality of their flowers is excellent. They also have balloons, stuffed animals and gift baskets; so procrastinators like me can get everything they need with just one phone call.

Recently, I received my college diploma and wanted to have it framed so that I could display it properly. I brought it down to the local Michael's Arts & Craft's framing department which had big signs up advertising "50% OFF ALL CUSTOM FRAMING". I was quoted a price of $125, which I said was reasonable after they took the 50% off. At that point, I was informed that the quote already reflected the discount. Taking my diploma, and walking out the door, I remembered that there was a local framing store -- Parthenon Framing.
The people at Parthenon couldn't have been more helpful and quoted me a price of $50. I quickly agreed and they didn't even want a deposit from me. I was quoted a turnaround time of 1-2 weeks, so you could imagine my surprise when they called 4 days later to let me know that my framed diploma was ready for pickup. They did a fan |
