Great spot, except for its bigoted and egotistical owner! 3/26/2008

The place is great for music and the chill feel is a plus, but the customer service is seriously lacking. A group of us went out to see a band on a friday night and the owner, was rude to a friend of mine who happened to be the only black girl in the place! He is extremely cheap and egotistical. When she told him the previous shot she had earlier from the other bartender was bigger and said she was willing to pay whatever price for it, he felt it necessary to point out loudly that he was the owner and the bar wouldn't pay for this and that, but she had already said she didn't care how much it cost! Then, upset that she wouldn't tip him (due to his rude and condescending service) he got bitter and got on the mic to announce that there were "cheap motherf%&^!s in the place!" How pathetic can a person get?! What's even worse is that when she had one of us (who is white) buy her next drink, the prejudiced owner gave him a decent shot! I have no respect for anyone or establishment with preferential customer service. We all vowed to never go back there again! Although Seamonster is a cool place, its owner is such a turnoff, it's just not worth it. So, if you're white and are not offended by discrimination toward other races, this is the place to be, but anyone else is better served going to the many other UNBIASED bars Seattle has to offer! Pros: good music Cons: owner is prejudiced more

Great little unlikely jazz club 1/27/2007

I always wanted to go to this place because I liked the name, but never had a reason to until my wife said she wanted to listen to some jazz and I saw that they had a jazz band playing here. I had no idea they even had jazz at this place (actually quite regularly), but we leapt at the opportunity and I'm very glad that we did. Great, almost subterranean atmosphere. The music was great and so were the drinks. We plan to make this a regular spot for ourselves, but don't tell too many people because its not that big. Pros: Music & Ambience Cons: Can be hard to find a seat more

The food is gone, but it's all about the music 3/25/2006

SeaMonster doesn't serve food anymore (although a friend told me they let him bring in grub from Rain next door), and the bar is kind of limited, but the music is unbeatable. If you can, catch Thaddeus Turner (guitarist in Drunken Masters and Pantheon, on Thursday and Friday nights) or Mike Peterson (drummer, Suffering F***heads, last Saturday of every month). Pros: Music, Music, Music Cons: Small, Limited Bar more

WOW! What an exceptional spot! 8/9/2005

Umm..weird 6/7/2005

There's not much else to say... I arrived to meet some friends--never been there before, live in the neigborhood--arrived at 9:05, was asked by hostess to pay $10 cover as there was a DJ (read: one guy playing music and his groupie girlfriend swaying on the empty dance floor) even though we were planning on dining. So that sucked. Sat in a cool, private booth with curtains in the back. Waitress was nice, if a bit forgetful. Food was funny. As in: such small portions I actually laughed. But it tasted ok...drinks were good-ish. Weird scene. Weird clientele. Weird owner. He followed us out after we left and asked us why we were leaving (we were done eating). He said he hoped it wasn't the DJ (it might have been...and the $10 cover, too.) All in all, I'd say...umm...weird. Not worth it...but hey, maybe it was just an off night. Pros: Private booths Cons: DJ, Groupie, Cover more

Just Fabulous! 3/10/2004

For starters, the bread and herbed butters were made in-house and were delicious. We tried the poisson cru, rare ahi marinated in lime and coconut. It was mouthwatering, The citrus prawn pasta and spicy potatoes (bravadas) were also very tasty. These are all small tapa sizes for sharing and easy on the wallet. To top it all we tried the homemade gelato sampler (tarragon chocolate, truly cinnamon and vanilla saffron) These were delightful and the spice/flavor pairings worked well. We loved our attentive and friendly waiter and sat in a cozy alcove with live music in the background. We had a GREAT experience and can't wait to go back! more

Best of the best 2/1/2004

Wallingford gets a dose of raw, funky, soul music every Saturday night. The DJ spins rare funky soul and funk and the "no-name" band jams with an eclectic and oft-changing lineup. People, this is some of the funkiest music and grooves on the West Coast. The bartender treats you like family and the people are super nice. No smoking, so you'll go home smelling the same as you walked in... for sure one of the best kept secrets in Seattle. Pros: Food, People, Music Cons: , Parking, No Seattle Beer more
