So I go to my sister's house for bar-b-q, but they don't have the fixin's. Instead of spending hours going to the store and preparing the que'er she suggest that we visit a local Mexican restaurant, Don Pepe's.
I had never been there so I wasn't expecting much.
The restaurant can be found at the end of a shopping center off of Coit road in Dallas near Richardson. It's a bit older looking both on the outside and inside. Who ever decorated the place simply threw Mexican themed stuff all over the place and called it a day. It looked like a trough.
So we walk in and sit down. The place was fairly busy and a bit loud, but not too bad. We are immediately greeted by a waiter, he gets our drinks, and before we know it the drink are at the table with some chips and salsa.
The salsa was FANTASTICO! It was a bit over loaded on the onions, but in this case, it didn't matter. It was sweet and tomato-ish with a hint of cilantro, jalepeno and onions. There was also an after taste to it that had a bite, almost like black pepper, but it wasn't. The chips were good and the tortillas weren't home made, but they sufficed.
The iced tea. I don't know what brand they used, but it was pretty good. I don't usually comment too much about drinks, but the tea tasted very clean and had a hint of mint, I believe. The glasses also stay full the entire time we were there. If our waiter didn't fill up the glasses one of three other waiters did! Excellent team work!!!
My wife and I ordered a fajita plate that included beef, chicken, quail, and ribs. The beef fajita meat was average. It was a little tough, but spiced pretty nicely. To be fair, I did wait to eat the beef last, but it was the least appealing of what was offered on the place. The quail was good as quail goes. It tasted a little like dark meat chicken, but a little saltier. The quail was still on the bones, so it took me a while to get through that portion of the meal. No complaints, though. The chicken fajitas were excellent. They were covered in grilled onions which seeped a bit of that onion bite into the chicken. After I mixed the sour cream, great salsa, beans, and pico I opened my mouth to a splendid treat. The ribs, ah yes, the ribs. They were a tiny bit on the dry side, but that's exactly how I like them. The sauce was different, but excellent. It was bar-b-que sauce with some extra spices in them ( I couldn't identify them) but the sauce made the ribs the best part of the meal. Luckily my wife wasn't all that hungry and she let me make a pig of myself by eating all of those excellent animal ribs.
The waiters were great. Every time we needed something we got it within a few minutes, if not less. They were attentive, but not overbearing.
I also ordered a mint julep type alcoholic beverage. It had rum, mint liqueur, and some other stuff that I couldn't identify. It tasted like sugary water with alcohol and mint. It sounds weird, but it was different a really good. I drank it real hard.
My complaints: rice was not included on the fajita caddy. We got sour cream, guac (excellent guac, by the way), pico, but no rice. That hurt a little. My second complaint, they did not have a baby changing station in the men's restroom.
If you haven't been by Don Pepe's and you live in the north Dallas region, you really need to stop by.
