For me, one of the most devastating things about being diagnosed with breast cancer was that I had no control over my diagnosis or the many upcoming surgeries that I would undergo. Although I did not have a choice when it came to my diagnosis, I did have a choice about the doctors and surgeons that would accompany me on my long, frightening journey. I believe that there is absolutely nothing more reassuring than knowing you have an excellent, skillful surgeon who truly cares about you and understands what you are going through, whether you are have chosen elective surgery or are facing an unavoidable cancer surgery. For me, this surgeon was Dr. Richard Carlino, and I knew this from the absolute moment I met him. After interviewing several surgeons, I found Dr. Carlino and his staff far surpassed all the others in the areas of experience, knowledge, compassion and professionalism. I am truly grateful to Dr. Carlino for the excellent reconstructive surgery he performed on me in October 2006, and the personal care, attention and support that I received throughout my recovery process. There are so many uncertainties, fears and worries that come along with a cancer diagnosis. I am thankful that my plastic surgeon, Richard Carlino, is not one of them.
